We are in the middle of an epochal struggle over the direction of American economic policy. The Democrats, who are currently in charge, want to follow a Keynesian model, which entails massive government spending — with its attendant tax increases and soaring deficit — to jump-start the economy. The Republicans think the solution to our economic doldrums is to lower taxes and decrease spending, to stimulate business activity and help the nation climb out of its crippling debt. And then there’s Barack Obama…. You might think he would be the natural spokesman for the Democratic strategy. And when the cameras...

In response to President's #My2K Hashtag twitter request (estimated increase in taxes for middle class), I recommend instead we all twitter with the Hashtag #My52k - the amount every grandparent, parent, and child individually owes on the national debt. Republicans should offer no new revenue without a capitulation on spending. Please make this viral....

The Second Hamas-Israel War of Nov. 10-21 inspired a mighty debate over rights and wrongs, with each side appealing to the large undecided bloc (19 percent of Americans according to CNN/ORC, 38 percent according to Rasmussen). Is Israel a criminal state that has no right to exist, much less to deploy force? Or is it a modern liberal democracy with the rule of law that justifiably protects innocent civilians? Morality drives this debate. To any sentient person, it is obvious that Israelis are 100-percent justified to protect themselves from wanton attacks. A cartoon from the First Hamas-Israel War of 2008-09 symbolically...

'The U.S. had planned to blow up the moon with a nuclear bomb in the 1950s. At the height of the space race, the U.S. considered detonating an atom bomb on the moon as a display of America's Cold War muscle. The secret project, named 'A Study of Lunar Research Flights' and nicknamed 'Project A119,' however was never carried out. America's planning included calculations by astronomer Carl Sagan, then a young graduate student, of the behavior of dust and gas generated by the blast, the Daily Mail reports.'

The Thanksgiving Day that millions of Americans celebrate, with turkey and stuffing, is a myth. The true history was forgotten long ago, and even most of the history books have it wrong. The myth goes like this: The Pilgrims landed in 1620 and founded the Colony of New Plymouth. They had a difficult first winter, but survived with the help of the Indians. In the fall of 1621, the grateful Pilgrims held their first Thanksgiving Day and invited the Indians to a big Thanksgiving-Day feast with turkey and pumpkins. There was indeed a big feast in 1621, but it was...

  • BLAZING BROOKS: MEL SAYS 'SADDLES' COULDN'T BE MADE IN 2012

It's a good thing Mel Brooks' inspiration for "Blazing Saddles" struck in the early 1970s and not 2012. Had Brooks come up with the western genre spoof today, it wouldn't pass muster at any major studio.

Brooks himself shared that sad truth during a visit to "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last night. "Blazing Saddles" starred Gene Wilder, Cleavon Little, Harvey Korman and Madeline Kahn in a zany send up of classic western films. And while "Superbad," "Bridesmaids" and "Project X" push the boundaries of modern cinema, they couldn't compare to the outrageous gags Brooks sprinkled throughout his 1974 comedy classic. "It couldn't be made today," Brooks tells Kimmel flatly before launching into a classic story about an early preview of the film, and how a man high up at Warner Bros. told him to make some major cuts ... or else. "We had this preview, people went crazy. They laughed, they enjoyed it. Afterwards, he grabs me by the collar and shoves me into an office ... and he says, “Okay, here’s a legal pad, here’s a pencil, take these notes...” “N-word, OUT! We don’t say it. No punching a horse. Noooo punching a horse. Around the campfire, cut out the farting… out! It's out! You can’t punch an old lady. Lily von Schtupp and the black sheriff … you can’t – OUT, OUT.”

I’ve got egg on my face. I predicted a Romney landslide and, instead, we ended up with an Obama squeaker. The key reason for my bum prediction is that I mistakenly believed that the 2008 surge in black, Latino, and young voter turnout would recede in 2012 to “normal” levels. Didn’t happen. These high levels of minority and young voter participation are here to stay. And, with them, a permanent reshaping of our nation’s politics. In 2012, 13% of the vote was cast by blacks. In 04, it was 11%. This year, 10% was Latino. In ’04 it was 8%....
  • Where A Candidate Campaigns On the Last Days Of An Election Gives Big Clues On Who's Winning

(Let's do this for Todd Beamer who gave his all for the country he loved) Looking at the places a candidate visits on the last days of a campaign can give clues as to what the internal numbers tell them about their chances of winning an election. Whenever a person throws their hat in the ring, they start by convincing their base to support them. So at first, they will spend a lot of time getting acquainted with the voters who are most likely to vote for them. As the campaign matures into the election cycle, they will spend less...
