  • My review of "American Sniper"

We saw "American Sniper" last night. My wife and I went with a group of about a dozen other military parents (Navy, Marine Corps, Army). This is not a typical "war movie" in that it explores one man's journey from civilian life into the military community into war (four tours in Iraq) and then explores his difficult re-entry into civilian life. So, in a way, the movie is about the family and community of the as much as it is about Chris Kyle. There are aspects of the movie that some will dismiss as trite or jingoistic: Kyle's father instructing...

This is such clever and awesome idea! Who would have thought putting your iPhone 4 inside a guitar and using its camera could create such cool and creative video. I never really did see this coming and this is such a novel idea that most people haven’t seen or tried such an experiment before. Learn more from this video and you might want to try it for yourself! Have you seen such before? See video at link

Jessa Duggar, or any of the Duggars for that matter, has never been one to keep her religious or political views to herself -- and Sunday was no exception. Jessa attended March for Life in Little Rock, an anti-abortion demonstration, and she posted numerous photos from the event to her Instagram account. First, Jessa posted a message saying, "The Heart of Arkansas Beats for Life;" next, was a photo of the rally; and last, the 19 Kids and Counting star posted a picture of a sign that read "God loves every life from beginning to end." Unsurprisingly, her many followers...
  • New signal amplification process set to transform communications, imaging, computing

Signal amplification is ubiquitous to all electronic and optoelectronic systems for communications, imaging and computing - its characteristics directly impact device performance. A new signal amplification process discovered by a team of University of California, San Diego researchers is now poised to fuel new generations of electrical and photonic devices - transforming the fields of communications, imaging and computing. In the journal Applied Physics Letters, from AIP Publishing, the team describes their work behind this discovery. "For many years, the semiconductor industry has relied on photodetectors for optoelectrical conversion, followed by low-noise electronic amplifiers to convert optical signals into electronic...

Pink Floyd academic, composer, and pianist Gilad Cohen's studies of the band, along with performances of Cohen's compositions, will be featured in events held in Illinois, at the University of Chicago, and Northwestern University, in early February. Cohen [right] will be giving two lectures, titled "Large-Scale Structure in the music of Pink Floyd: 'Dogs' and 'Shine On'" and "Large-Scale Structure in the music of Pink Floyd: 'Dogs'". They will each offer insight on a variety of subjects related to these songs as well as two unique opportunities for discussion. Northwestern University's lecture will consist of an expansive analysis of 'Dogs'...

Happy Sunday! Ready to have your mind blown?By mixing ultra-bright projectors and advanced facial tracking with some damned fine visual design, these guys are able to use their faces as a canvas some truly wild work. ==>>>Watch on as they morph from human, to alien, to cheetah, to robot overlord on the fly.<<<==So how does it work? To oversimplify it: an array of cameras tracks the dots on their faces, akin to the way Hollywood motion capture systems work. They then take some truly amazing texture/animation work and digitally morph it around a model of each guy’s face — essentially...

"Photographer Levi Bettweiser is the man behind the Rescued Film Project, an effort to find and rescue old and undeveloped rolls of film from the far corners of the world. He recently came across one of his biggest finds so far: 31 undeveloped rolls of film shot by a single soldier during World War II. Bettweiser tells us he found the film rolls in late 2014 at an auction in Ohio. About half the rolls were labeled with various location names (i.e. Boston Harbor, Lucky Strike Beach, LaHavre Harbor). “I know nothing about who shot the film or who it...

When you think of icebergs, you probably think of those large white objects you see in movies and pictures. In rare situations, they can also be seen in a different form. When the iceberg gets flipped upside-down, it looks like a giant shiny piece of ice that’s the color of the surrounding water.

Rebekah filmed herself opening the package, in which she found a handwritten note from Swift. “I was thinking about you today, and how you have been there cheering me on in the most thoughtful and creative ways,” Swift wrote to Rebekah, mentioning a video and other posts Rebekah made. Swift continued, “I got out my paints for the first time in a while today and made you something. I really, really, really hope you like it. I’m not a good painter, but you’re so beautiful and positive, even though you’re dealing with the stress life brings, so I wanted to...
  • Leviathan director Andrei Zvyagintsev: ‘Living in Russia is like being in a minefield’

[...] Zvyagintsev [a noted Russian film director whose "Leviathan" has recently taken the Golden Globe prize] swims resolutely against the tide. One remark by Russia’s culture minister, Vladimir Medinsky, who, earlier this year, said openly that he did not like Leviathan, seems especially to irritate. “He said: ‘Let all the flowers grow, but we will only water the ones we like.’ After these words he should have been fired, because this is a direct violation of the constitution, a direct violation of human expression. You cannot impose rules on art. Everybody should be equal. Government help, without which art cannot...

The French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo will publish a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed along with the words "All is forgiven" Wednesday on the cover of its first issue since Islamist militants killed 12 people at its central Paris offices. In a further show of defiance, the fearless magazine announced it would print three million copies – not the usual 60,000 – when it reappears on newsstands on Wednesday. It will also be translated into six languages including English, Arabic and Turkish, editor-in-chief Gérard Biard told a Paris news conference Tuesday. Daily newspaper Libération, which hosted Charlie Hebdo staff as...

Honey Bee is a cat, born in Fiji, who just so happens to be blind. Nevertheless, her lack of functioning eyesight hasn't stopped this inquisitive feline from hitting the hiking trails in her new forever home in Seattle -- an appropriate story to tell in January, which is National Walk Your Pet Month. Now rolling with the motto "Bravery, adventure, cuteness," she has also become a YouTube sensation after a video of one of her jaunts escalated to viral heights. The story of Honey Bee begins in Fiji, where she was living in the care of the Animals Fiji organization.
