Dozens of countries around the world have allowed their citizens who happen to be abroad on Election Day to vote by absentee for decades. Practically speaking, absentee balloting is more necessary in a country like Israel, where elections are set three months in advance, than in the United States, where Americans know their presidential races will be held every four years in November. So why is absentee balloting for Israelis such a controversial issue, and why have governments promised it for years and never delivered? To answer the first question, it is important to understand the ethos of Israeli society....

“In the years since the Florida issue in the 2000 presidential election, there’s been increasing interest in how election officials get their jobs and how they do their jobs,” Chapin said. “Most recently, in the wake of a presidential commission report, there’s been a push to think a lot more broadly about the notion of professionalism or professionalization in the field of election administration.” A Connecticut official wants to require formal training for the state’s election administrators to try to avoid another election where voters have trouble casting their ballots. Denise Merrill, Connecticut’s secretary of state, pitched a plan in...

Mrs. Mosby and I were traveling through SC Southbound I-95 on 3 Nov, and encountered a huge VanHool brand new white charter tour bus- unmarked. It pulled into the Flying J truckstop in Florence,SC and disgorged about a 100 hispanics (from business experience and listening to them in the store-these were Mexican indios, and all were males). They all went into the store, purchased snacks, then got back aboard and it left, having fueled at the diesel truck pumps. While it was fueling, we went around and took down the GA license plate- tried to locate the driver and make...

Election officials in San Antonio, Texas are examining a disabled voting machine after it allegedly left Republican gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott's name off of the ballot. Earlier on Tuesday, the machine was being utilized in Bexar County's First Chinese Baptist Church of San Antonio. Bexar County Election Administrator Jacque Callan told local media outlet KENS 5 that the machine was "experiencing issues." According to Callan, the machine has a counter which will allow election officials to determine exactly how many voters used it. At this point, there is no explanation as to how -- or why -- the glitch occurred.

An Arizona county party official said he saw a man stuffing “hundreds” of ballots into the ballot box and later told a local news outlet the entire incident was caught on surveillance video. “A person wearing a Citizens for a Better Arizona T-shirt dropped a large box of hundreds of early ballots on the table and started stuffing the ballot box as I watched in amazement,” said A.J. LaFaro, chairman of the Maricopa County Republican Party.Surveillance video allegedly captures man stuffing “hundreds” of ballots into a ballot box in Maricopa County, Arizona, Aug. 25, 2014. Via the Standard, my mental image of Democratic incumbents and their strategists reacting to this clip is of Toht’s face melting off after the Ark is opened in “Raiders.†He’s saying this, mind you, on a day when Mitch McConnell’s Democratic opponent in Kentucky refused to answer a question about whether she voted for him in 2012. A study released a few days ago found that barely more than a third of the Democrats running for Congress this year have expressed support for ObamaCare. The GOP made more noise yesterday about the one-year anniversary of the federal O-Care exchange opening...

A relative of labor leader Cesar Chavez, filed a legal challenge on Tuesday to have a man using his grandfather's name stricken from the ballot in Arizona. The challenge, alleges that the man who changed his name to Cesar Chavez from Scott Fistler should be removed from the primary election ballot for misleading voters in the largely Hispanic seventh congressional district.

This post was updated at 4:40 p.m. ET. A federal judge in Detroit has ruled that Democratic Rep. John Conyers, the second-most-senior member of the U.S. House, will appear on the August primary ballot, overturning a decision by Michigan's secretary of state who said the candidacy was invalid.

Longtime Michigan Congressman John Conyers joined a federal lawsuit Thursday taking aim at the requirement that petition collectors be registered voters, as part of a larger challenge to an order removing his name from the primary ballot in August. Conyers, who was first elected to the House in 1964 and represents a district including Detroit and several suburbs, joined the suit two days after Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett determined he didn’t have enough signatures to appear on the Aug. 5 Democratic primary ballot. She found Conyers was more than 400 signatures short of 1,000 needed. The suit was filed...

TAMPA -- Some Florida Republicans fear, and some Democrats hope, that a November referendum on legalizing medical marijuana in Florida will drive young and liberal voters to the polls, helping Democratic candidates including gubernatorial challenger Charlie Crist. The initiative, still not certified for the November ballot, is generating charges of political motives from both sides. Some Republicans call it an expensive ploy by Crist's backers to help him win. "It is no coincidence that Charlie Crist's law partner and biggest supporter, John Morgan, is financing medical marijuana," said Gainesville-based GOP consultant Alex Patton. "It's a plan." Some Democrats, meanwhile, say...

Last week, California Gov. Jerry Brown released his headdesk-worthy budgetary plans for divvying up the first round of a planned state budget surplus, largely borne of the temporary tax hike voters elected to add via the ballot measure Proposition 30 in 2012: Namely, to use the ‘extra’ $4.2 billion in revenue to practically gloss over the state’s hundreds of billions in debt while growing their general-fund spending by more than eight percent. Part of that esteemed plan includes a provision to redirect some funds away from California’s cap-and-trade fund and into the high-speed rail boondoggle that Brown insists upon wearing...

A new CNN/ORC International poll released Thursday shows Republicans holding a 49 percent to 44 percent edge over Democrats in the “generic ballot,” ... Just two months ago, after the government shutdown, Democrats were up 50 percent to 42 percent. But a month later, the GOP had a narrow edge - 49 percent to 47 percent.

Since 2008, the idea of third parties started to gain more popularity across America. Principled conservatives and libertarians united against both the Democrat and Republican establishment started to explore methods of opposing Washington elites and the status quo. The Tea Party had some success – and has continued most successfully – with primary campaigns which put principled people like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul in races as the Republican candidate. Once they won the GOP nomination, winning the general election was often pretty straightforward. Yet many liberty activists have become disenchanted by the two party system and are turning to other options....

Elections officials are continuing to investigate an incident in which nine absentee ballots were mailed to a man who lives across the hall from Phil Carter, a candidate for the Winston-Salem City Council. The absentee ballot requests came mostly from residents of Holland Homes apartments on Mount Zion Place. What got the attention of local elections officials was that the elections office was asked to send all of the ballots to one address – the home of Benjamin Parker on E. Fifth Street. Parker lives in an apartment across a hallway from Carter’s apartment. Carter is in a three-way race...

JULIA Gillard has called for a Labor leadership ballot to be held at 7pm tonight. ''Anyone who believes they should be Labor leader should put themselves forward for this ballot,'' the Prime Minister said. She said anyone who entered the ballot should commit, in the interests of the party, to resigning from parliament if they lost. The move forces the Rudd camp to bring forward their preferred timetable for a challenge. They had hoped to engineer a special caucus meeting tomorrow and a challenge on Friday. “I am asking my political party to endorse me as a leader and Prime...
