  • 6 Big Cities See Hiring Fade After Minimum Wage Hikes

U.S. cities that implemented big minimum-wage hikes to $10 an hour or more in 2015 have seen a strikingly similar aftermath: Job gains have fallen to multiyear lows at restaurants, hotels and other leisure and hospitality venues. The data aren't, for the most part, stark and reliable enough to amount to smoking-gun proof. But Chicago, Oakland, San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. — all on the leading edge of the push for big minimum wage hikes — all show worrisome job trends.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is feeling unappreciated. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, he suggests that many of his accomplishments are being overlooked because of the day-to-day news cycle. A lot of people outside New York City understand what happened in the first year of New York City better than people in New York City, de Blasio said.

Tourists in downtown Washington, D.C. may have been confused by a small, colorful gathering on the mall on Saturday, as a group of activists came together for the Million Puppet March with a message of government support for PBS. While the Count may have been disappointed the assembled crowd for this million-strong march was a few hundred at most the activists in their cobbled-together homemade costumes did their best. President Obama was on the ropes in the polls after the first presidential debate. After the second presidential debate, he hit the mat in the polls. And after the third presidential debate, he looks to be down for the count. The question, of course, is why. Looking at the debates alone doesn't tell the full story. Romney surely won the first debate -- in fact, he cleaned President Obama's clock -- but in the second debate, he fought President Obama to a draw. And in the third and final debate, which centered on foreign policy, Romney pulled his punches. So...

When the evening began, one observation dominated the conversation: If President Barack Obama has another debate like the last one, the elections over. When the evening ended, I was struck by a different thought: If Obama had performed this way at the first debate, the election would have been over. When a politician is in trouble, he usually falls back on what he knows best -- the world he saw around him when he entered into political awareness as a young adult. So Obama on the campaign trail and Joe Biden in the vice presidential debate fell back on what they know from their formative political years. Chuck Todd appeared on MSNBCs Morning Joe earlier today to discuss Team Obama strategy and perhaps staffing in the wake of their debate debacle. Six days later, not only is the Barack Obama campaign still talking about the debate, theyve released an ad about perhaps the least important issue mentioned in it Big Bird. Instead of changing the subject, theyre continuing to extend the damage, and Mike Barnicle asked Todd about their strange obsession with the debate rather than finding anything else to discuss. Todd agrees, and says that Chicago may be making some personnel changes in...

DENVER Mitt Romney has flipped the script. Not only is the Republican presidential candidate, after a brutal month following the conventions, getting a significant bounce following his strong performance in last weeks debate, but Romney is also now the candidate articulating a more inspirational, positive vision for the countrys future (even if he is quoting regularly from the show, Friday Night Lights). October 7, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan came to the Chicago area for a big fundraiser, and protesting Democrats were waiting for him. His motorcade arrived at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare. The top price was nearly $76,000 per person. Outside, Democrats demonstrated against the Republican agenda and Big Bird joined them to protest Mitt Romney's plan to end the federal subsidy for the Public Broadcasting System. They were upset about his Medicare plans, but Republicans say they're on a roll after the first Presidential debate. "The Romney-Ryan voucher plan would leave seniors at the mercy of...
