There has been a reoccurring thought- that POTUS would declare martial law if he saw his legacy about to go down the drain. So, I wrote a book along this line. Essentially, I believe that there would be a schism, with much of the south and midwest declaring their allegiance to the Constitution and resisting the Washington dictates. Some states would sit it out, others, like California, would support martial law. If interested, the book is out there on Amazon Unlimited. Those that have read it think it is a good read.

During a national emergency, a liberal Marxist-leaning political leadership takes absolute control of the United States. Martial law is declared and elections are suspended. This leadership morphs into a complete Communist-style government. All dissent is brutally repulsed. Two young university students, Peter Blake and Natalie Biriukova, become active leaders in the resistance movement. They soon fall in love. In time they are targeted by the government and forced to go on the run. A feared and notorious Compliance Officer, Nicholas Snoopczech, is hot on their trail. He is hated and feared by Americans, especially those who are brave enough to...

Shakespeare's skull is likely missing from his grave, an archaeologist has concluded, confirming rumors which have swirled for years about grave-robbers and adding to the mystery surrounding the Bard's remains. Four hundred years after his death and burial at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Stratford-upon-Avon, central England, researchers were allowed to scan the grave of England's greatest playwright with ground-penetrating radar. But in the area under the church floor where the Bard's skull was expected to be, they found signs of interference.

Kate Beckinsale is cracking down on her fellow actors in the first full trailer for Oscar nominee Whit Stillman’s Sundance costume comedy, Love & Friendship. The clip, released Wednesday, introduces Beckinsale as Lady Susan Vernon, a widow who retreats to her in-laws’ estate as a means to escape circulating rumors about her social life. While there, she attempts to find a suitable partner for her daughter, Frederica (Morfydd Clark), and herself. The film, adapted from Jane Austen’s Lady Susan, features a supporting cast that includes Chloë Sevigny as Alicia Johnson, Xavier Samuel as Reginald DeCourcy, and Stephen Fry as Mr....

She recalls: 'Suddenly Abbi came in, quite hysterical and said that Anna had fallen in the tree. I thought she'd just climbed a little too high and because she was so sick she'd slipped and got stuck.' Abigail physically grabbed her mother and dragged her the several hundred yards from their house to the grove of trees where the accident had happened. Christy says: 'When I got there, Adelynn, who was 7 at the time, was at the base of the tree digging in the mud with a little bit of metal. 'I said, "What are you doing? Where's Annabel?"...

We must eliminate sight-words from the public schools. That's the only way to save reading, and the only way we're going to save the schools themselves. The Education Establishment is great at creating jargon, convoluted theories, propaganda, lies, fake research, and new packaging for failed ideas. Average parents don't stand a chance of understanding all this nonsense. So here is a little video, 7 1/2 minutes, that explains almost everything you need to know about phonics, sight words, Dolch words, high frequency words, dyslexia, and how they are all connected. There is some very intense music which I still love;...

University of California officials are proposing to include "anti-Zionism" as a form of discrimination that is unacceptable on campus, according to a long-awaited draft statement on intolerance released Tuesday. The inclusion immediately drew sharply divergent reactions, with pro-Israel groups hailing it as a needed step to protect Jewish students from hostility and those supporting Palestinian rights criticizing it as a naked attempt to suppress criticism of the Jewish state. Scholars were similarly divided over whether a statement meant to express the UC regents' principles against intolerance should include Zionism -- historically an international movement to establish a Jewish homeland and...
  • Timely quote from Vaclav Havel

The Power of the Powerless To the memory of Jan Patocka "The Power of the Powerless" (October 1978) was originally written ("quickly," Havel said later) as a discussion piece for a projected joint Polish Czechoslovak volume of essays on the subject of freedom and power. All the participants were to receive Havel's essay, and then respond to it in writing. Twenty participants were chosen on both sides, but only the Czechoslovak side was completed. Meanwhile, in May 1979, some of the Czechoslovak contributors who were also members of VONS (the Committee to Defend the Unjustly Prosecuted), including Havel, were arrested,...
  • Fake Reading Instruction is Biggest Con of all

Quora, a discussion forum, posed the question: what are the biggest scams/cons in modern history? Dozens of smart, entertaining answers have been left: sale of the Eiffel Tower, bottled water, Scientology, military deceptions, Madoff, the diamond engagement ring, etc. One respondent says the central banking system is a huge con, which may be true. Trouble is, financial matters are very difficult so the con may not be obvious even after the matter is explained. So that leaves one clear winner. The biggest con is making 50 million Americans totally or partially illiterate by using a method known not to work....

“The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from Apple Inc. and left in place a ruling that the company conspired with publishers to raise electronic book prices when it sought to challenge Amazon.com’s dominance of the market,” The Associated Press reports. “The justices’ order on Monday lets stand an appeals court ruling that found Cupertino, California-based Apple violated antitrust laws in 2010,” AP reports. “The 2-1 ruling by the New York-based appeals court sustained a trial judge’s finding that Apple orchestrated an illegal conspiracy to raise prices. A dissenting judge called Apple’s actions legal, ‘gloves-off competition.'”“Apple Inc. must pay $450...
  • Prince Harry's ex Cressida Bonas joins builder's daughter Stefanie Martini in Doctor Thorne [tr]

UK Daily Mail ^ | March 7, 2016 | Lucy Waterlow and Luisa Metcalfe
It's Julian Fellowes' hotly anticipated follow-up to Downton Abbey offering all his hallmarks of lavish costumes, stately homes - and some very glamorous stars. Prince Harry's ex-girlfriend Cressida Bonas is making her TV debut as an heiress, while builder's daughter Stefanie Martin is playing heroine Mary Thorne - a role expected to catapult her from obscurity into stardom. They're both relative unknowns in their field, who look equally at home in period costume and on the red carpet, with looks that wouldn't be out of place in Hollywood. But who will win the viewers' hearts?
  • Publishing's lack of diversity fails readers: author Rai

As the film and music industries grapple with the fallout from the race rows that dogged the Oscars and the Brit Awards, English author Bali Rai warns publishing too has a serious diversity issue. The award-winning writer, who has Indian heritage but was born and grew up in Leicester, echoes critics of Hollywood and the Academy Awards when he suggests gatekeepers are only recognising a narrow band of talent and ideas, which does not properly reflect society.

I have been much concerned that so many people today with Conservative instincts feel compelled to apologize for them. Or if not to apologize directly, to qualify their commitment in a way that amounts to breast-beating. “Republican candidates,” Vice President Nixon has said, “should be economic conservatives, but conservatives with a heart.” President Eisenhower announced during his first term, “I am conservative when it comes to economic problems but liberal when it comes to human problems.” Still other Republican leaders have insisted on calling themselves “progressive” Conservatives.1 These formulations are tantamount to an admission that Conservatism is a narrow, mechanistic...

Pat Conroy’s family eased him from this life into the next by reading poems, playing country music and singing to him. “We did sing the Marine Corps Hymn,” his sister Kathy Harvey said. “It was the only way to send him out.” This was an appropriate choice. The man whose Marine Corps father had so brutalized his childhood still maintained the utmost respect for the Marines. Marine Corps families, Conroy used to say, eat other families for breakfast. The same dynamic held in Conroy’s relationship with The Citadel, the military college in Charleston whose savage traditions he fictionalized in “The...
