NEW YORK — Dick Cheney has finished his memoir, according to his daughter, and the book is scheduled to come out on Aug. 30. Liz Cheney said that the former vice president’s manuscript was turned in at the beginning of the month. She said the book, currently being edited, will be “very straightforward,” with “a lot of in-depth analysis of really critically important issues.” Cheney’s memoir, “In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir,” is being published by Threshold Editions, a conservative imprint of Simon & Schuster run by Republican strategist and former Cheney aide Mary Matalin.

We have a building on fire that dries milk and makes cheese. There was a propane explosion earier, and the building is on fire, but an outside propane tank is in danger, they just filled it yesterday with 30,000 gallons, if that thing goes off it will be like a bomb! They are evacuating a square mile, every person, every business, nursing homes, schools. But this is a small town, if it goes, the whole town will shake!

A Red Cross boat delivering supplies to help 1,000 victims of last weekend's cyclone sank Sunday when it hit debris in the Irrawaddy Delta region, as the U.S. prepared to deliver relief supplies to Myanmar. "The crew managed to get to the safety of an island, along with four Red Cross staff who were on the boat," Red Cross official Joe Lowry said. "But we've lost most of the cargo."

When Hillary Clinton said, way back in New Hampshire, that Vladimir Putin "doesn't have a soul," I figured that would be the sort of thing the Russian wouldn't be pleased about. But when I called the foreign ministry the next day for comment, it was Orthodox Christmas, and I let it slide. He was asked about the remark at his press conference yesterday, however, and indeed wasn't pleased. The former KGB lieutenant colonel appeared to lash out at U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton — a leading Democratic candidate for president — when one reporter quoted her as saying that former KGB...

Then-Secretary of State Collin Powell made the case in 2003 in front of the United Nations that Saddam was providing al Qaeda safe haven in Iraq. As evidence he alleged that Abu Mus’ab Al Zarqawi was an al Qaeda operative in northern Iraq. For those who want to chastise the invasion of Iraq as misdirected and having nothing to do with al Qaeda, it became important to establish that Secretary of State Powell and the Bush Administration were “lying” to the UN.

A small group of people stood in the hot sun Thursday morning, peering into the sky. All eyes were waiting for the first glimpse of an airplane - the one bringing home the body of 27-year-old Sgt. Jacob Schmuecker of Norfolk. The mood was solemn, for all in attendance knew that Schmuecker had made the ultimate sacrifice when he was killed last weekend while serving his country. Among the assembled crowd at Karl Stefan Memorial Airport were men and women in military uniforms and fatigues, bearded and tattooed motorcycle riders and Schmuecker's close friends and family, including his wife, Lisa....

Mars is being hit by rapid climate change and it is happening so fast that the red planet could lose its southern ice cap, writes Jonathan Leake. Scientists from Nasa say that Mars has warmed by about 0.5C since the 1970s. This is similar to the warming experienced on Earth over approximately the same period. Since there is no known life on Mars it suggests rapid changes in planetary climates could be natural phenomena

LINCOLN - Attorney General Jon Bruning has changed his mind. He now is considering challenging fellow Republican Chuck Hagel in Nebraska's U.S. Senate primary next year. Bruning said Wednesday he is upset with Hagel's criticism of President Bush and the Iraq war. And, he said, his decision whether to run for the Senate no longer depends on whether Hagel decides to seek a third term. Bruning, who is exploring a Senate bid, said last month that he would not run against Hagel in the primary. Hagel has not disclosed his plans. He said in March that he would decide later...
