After almost a year of tinkering, CNN Worldwide President Jeff Zucker has concluded that a news channel cannot subsist on news alone. So he is planning much broader changes for the network—including a prime-time shakeup that’s likely to make CNN traditionalists cringe. Once, CNN’s vanilla coverage was a point of pride. Now, the boss boasts about the ratings for his unscripted series, and documentaries like the Sea World-slamming film Blackfish. Zucker, in his first one-on-one interview since taking control of CNN last January, told Capital he wants news coverage “that is just not being so obvious.” Instead, he wants more...

Children raised in single-parent households in the U.S. are far more likely to live in poverty than children with both parents present, according to Census figures released Monday. I remember the summer of 2011, a story about a crowd of teenagers at the Wisconsin State Fair randomly attacking fairgoers went viral as a sign of a burgeoning race war. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel fanned the flames, calling the teenagers "rampaging youths" who caused "mob-like disturbances": "Then around the closing time of 11 p.m., witnesses told the Journal Sentinel, dozens to hundreds of black youths attacked white people as they left the fair, punching and kicking people and shaking and pounding on their vehicles." "Dozens to hundreds"? When witnesses can't differentiate between 24 and 100, should we really rely...

Much like ‘wilding’ before it, the furor over the ‘knockout game’ bears all the hallmarks of an overblown panic over a crime wave that doesn’t exist. Have teenagers adopted a new game of random assaults, with the goal of a one-hit “knockout”? If you’ve been following local news, watching national coverage, or reading your Facebook newsfeed, you might think the answer is “yes.” The Today Show, for instance, reports that “teenagers [are] knocking people out for the fun of it,” targeting “women and children,” with cases “piling up.” Likewise, CNN writes that “A sick so-called game known as ‘knockout’…is catching...

Immigrants from outside Europe have taken £100billion more in benefits and services than they paid back in taxes, a major study revealed yesterday. Over a 16-year period, the bill to the taxpayer of providing them with welfare, health and education was 14 per cent higher than the money they put in the national purse. However, migrants from Europe–including those from Eastern Europe who came in large numbers after 2004–have paid more in taxes than they received, researchers said. The report from academics at University College London claims to be the most far-reaching study yet conducted of the impact of migration...

A controversial 600-plus page manual used by the military to train its Equal Opportunity officers teaches that “healthy, white, heterosexual, Christian” men hold an unfair advantage over other races, and warns in great detail about a so-called “White Male Club.” “Simply put, a healthy, white, heterosexual, Christian male receives many unearned advantages of social privilege, whereas a black, homosexual, atheist female in poor health receives many unearned disadvantages of social privilege,” reads a statement in the manual created by the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI). The manual, which was obtained by Fox News, also instructs troops to “support the...

Kyle Olson of EAGnews, an education reform non-profit based in Muskegon, recently published a video exposing the content of the curriculum that will be used by fourth grade teachers for the Common Core national standards in English. Olson takes issue with the use of a children’s book called “The Jacket.” Olson explains, “The story centers around a young white boy named Phil who wrongly accuses an African-American student of stealing his brother’s jacket. This is a fun little book about racism and white privilege – a left-wing concept that teaches students the values of an American society are actually designed...

An almost unfathomable gap divides public attitudes on basic issues involving gender, race, religion and politics in America, fueled by dramatic ideological and partisan divisions that offer the prospect of more of the bitter political battles that played out in Washington this month. A new ABC News/Fusion poll, marking the launch of the Fusion television network, finds vast differences among groups in trust in government, immigration policy and beyond, including basic views on issues such as the role of religion and the value of diversity in politics, treatment of women in the workplace and the opportunities afforded to minorities in...

Jason Morgan of the University of Wisconsin-Madison is a Ph.D. student who is objecting to his school’s mandatory diversity training. The first lesson he ever attended included a lecture by the teacher who stated that he and the entire class were all racists. The next session he was scheduled to take was a lesson on transgender issues, which he does not support due to his religious beliefs. On September 22nd, he sent a letter to his administrators and the press telling them why he wouldn’t be attending anymore indoctrination courses on campus. Dear Graduate Director Prof. Kantrowitz, Please forgive this...

Duke University sociology professor Eduardo Bonilla-Silva says white people are as racist as they’ve ever been, it’s just modern, more insidious forms of racism have taken over the more overt forms of racism common in America’s past, The Dartmouth reports. Bonilla-Silva made his argument Thursday in a guest lecture at the Ivy League Dartmouth College. Bonilla-Silva argued when white people say things such as “some of my best friends are black,” or “use the election of President Barack Obama to support the claim that America has moved beyond its racially tense past,” or say they didn’t personally own slaves – they are just denying their...

WASHINGTON — Two months after Detroit became the largest city ever to file for bankruptcy, top Obama administration officials will be there on Friday to propose nearly $300 million in combined federal and private aid toward a Motown comeback — only a fraction of the billions the city owes and a reflection of the budget and political limits on President Obama. This first major infusion from the federal government, which administration officials say will not be the last, would be used to help clear and redevelop blighted properties, improve transportation systems, bolster the police — especially around schools — and...
