During a soccer game early last year, Tiffany Lin began experiencing a sharp pain in her right knee. Then a freshman at Manhattan’s Beacon School, Lin tried to play through the pain but sought out a doctor when it wouldn’t subside. The diagnosis? She had Osgood-Schlatter disease, which is the inflammation of the area just below the knee. It mostly occurs during growth spurts and is exacerbated by continuous pounding of the knees that happens during sports such as soccer and running.

Last Saturday I went to "The Nation's Gun Show" in Chantilly, VA. I tried to buy two guns from two different vendors. I waited for over almost three hours for the "instant background check" to be completed, but finally left in frustration (I traveled almost an hour to get there). Granted, the place was packed, and there were hundreds of attempted transactions, but these gun shows are a regular occurrence, and there is a fee charged for the service. There were several announcements over the PA explaining to the patrons that the background check delays were being experienced by all...

This is my first vanity and I hope I've done it correctly. There are several noteworthy critical events/turning points in this nation's history. Some of the more prominent ones are well known such as the War for Independance, the Civil War, the great depression, WWII, etc. This election could well be one on those critical historical events. We are already a moderately socialist country and have experienced the loss or weakening of many freedoms that the founding fathers put in place. This election will determine the speed/rate at which we continue in our movement toward socialism. We will either drive...

Guilford College officials have scheduled a community forum on campus today to discuss an assault that authorities say was ethnically motivated. Three Guilford College students are free on bond after authorities accused them of beating three Palestinian students. Two of the students were seriously injured. The News and Record of Greensboro, citing court documents, reports that the assailants used their fists, feet and brass knuckles. The attack involved at least 15 members of the school's football team and occurred at Bryan Hall, a dormitory on the Guilford College campus. The attack occurred early Saturday morning. Michael Bates, Michael Robert Six...

TOKYO, Dec 22 (AFP) Japanese scientists Friday released what they say could be the first live video footage of the elusive giant squid, exposing some of the creature's underwater secrets. Scientists of the National Science Museum said they succeeded in catching a deep-sea giant squid at a depth of 640 meters (2,112 feet) on December 6 in the North Pacific Ocean, some 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) south of Tokyo. "As the video movie shows, the giant squid struggled furiously to escape the catch by spouting water from its funnel. This means they can actually swim pretty fast, in addition to...
  • Letter to the Editor (regarding Washington Post "cartoon")

Washington Post Editor-- As a military verteran, I am starting a grass-roots campaign that I plan to spread throughout the entire Washington DC metropolitan area: that is to have every single service member and veteran that currently receives the Post to UNSUBSCRIBE as a direct result of your callous, disrespectful decision to publish Mr. Toles' editorial cartoon on 29 January 2006. To place a wounded American soldier in the context of that cartoon was nothing less than a raging insult and a spit-in-the-face to every military member that has fought, is fighting or will fight for democracy. Can you even...
