On July 28, Fujian Province was struck by the year's most powerful typhoon, which brought with it strong winds and torrential rainfall that swept across the region. The province faced an unprecedented deluge, leading to severe flooding and presenting significant challenges to local authorities and residents.

MAYFIELD, Ky. – Potentially catastrophic amounts of rainfall prompted a Flash Flood Emergency declaration in western Kentucky, including the town of Mayfield, Wednesday morning as waves of thunderstorms pushed through the region. Already, 4 to 6 inches of rain have fallen in just a few hours, swamping roads in Hickman, Graves and Carlisle counties in western Kentucky and prompting several water rescues in Mayfield with many homes in Mayfield and Wingo surrounded by water, according to the National Weather Service office in Paducah, Kentucky.
  • Do any FReepers use the Brave or Opera web browsers? Feedback wanted!

My last computer question here on FR generated a lot of furor and only limited useful information (mostly positive comments regarding the Firefox browser.) But I'd like more info (feedback) from FReepers who may have used Brave or Opera, for comparison, as I got none in my prior thread. Pro's and cons from hopefully extensive use would be great to receive! In online articles, Brave seems particularly well thought of from a privacy and security standpoint, without going to the extremes (and more limited functionality) of TOR.
  • Browser Print Preview Options?

    Me | 7/16/2023 | Paul R.
I do a lot of printing of receipts and such from the Web, and print previews become "an issue". I both screen capture them as png files, and of course often print them. Internet Explorer gives one a WYSIWYG preview / display, and the WYSIWYG includes a (roughly) std. 8-1/2" x 11" image to view or even screen capture and save. I really like that 8-1/2" x 11" image. But, of course, IE is old hat, doesn't work on many sites, and probably isn't what you want to use if paying some company via the Web, anyway. Chrome's security issues...
  • How to add an "exe" to "All Programs" list in Win 10Pro?

    07/15/2023 5:04:55 PM PDT · by Paul R. · 25 replies
    Me | 7/5/2023 | Paul R.
There seems to be no way to get certain desired exe files (apps) to show up in the "All Programs" list in the Windows 10 Pro Start Menu. (This is common to Win 7 also, I believe, and perhaps earlier OS's as well.) I can add such exe's* to the Start Menu "tiles" in Win 10 Pro, but not to the "All Programs" list. This seems quite odd, but maybe I'm missing something? *Examples of such apps / exe files are "IV_Player" (Irfan View Player, a very handy & lightweight media file player), as well as "Wavosaur", a handy and...
  • Another Friday Night PC Wrestling Match! Dell 3420 Tower "almost there" / "Ghost" drive letters question...

After considerable grief(!) I have my new (refurbished) Dell Precision Tower 3420 just about ready to take over as my "main" desktop PC. The NVME M.2 drive is back to being the boot & programs drive (see note on using Acronis cloning software below), a 500 GB Crucial MX500 SSD is installed as the data drive (but also has Win10 Pro and a few other programs on it as an immediate fallback should the primary drive fail), and I've copied all my data files from my old HP Win 7 Pro machine onto a 240 GB SDD (actually the original...

Sometimes, certain things can become very annoying. And here is one, that likely only male members of FR might think of and surely (or at least very, VERY hopefully!) only our guys have experienced: Sweatpants / running pants / jogging pants can be handy and quite comfy, sweatpants in cool weather especially so. BUT, the darn things almost never have some sort of fly, as in a zippered or buttoned or "snapped" (securely!) fly. This can be a bit of a, well, "pain", or at least an inconvenience, especially if the waist is a bit tight, and, well, I won't...

Well, to put it bluntly, this sucks. I was in our local Aldi store earlier today and they were in the midst of going to all digital pricing. That is, there's essentially a bar code on the shelf under each group of boxes of items, or under the 2% milk rack, etc., which you scan with a smart phone to get the price. No printed prices are on the shelves, and won't be, according to the employee I spoke with.
  • Windows Recovery "Drive" Question

As a separate question arising from my last "article" / question, I am about to make a recovery drive for a refurbished Dell desktop machine I purchased recently. (Dell Precision Tower 3420 - a fairly impressive little machine considering I got it in great condition for under $80 including shipping.) When I read about recovery drives, often it is stated they can be used to restore the machine to its "factory" state, software-wise, should one run into a software problem, corrupted drive, etc., not otherwise resolvable. But... This machine likely originally had WIN 7 Pro on it and then was...

I'm trying to clone a 240 GB SATA SSD to a 500 GB Crucial M.2 NVME drive, this in a Win 10 Pro Dell 3420 desktop machine; the M.2 drive was physically installed earlier this evening. The Crucial cloning software (actually Acronis) finds the new disk just fine. But, just before I ok the setup and begin the cloning, Acronis advises the new disk will be "MBR", even though most advice is to use GPT with SSD's in Windows 8, 10, and 11. Maybe it's just me being tired (long day working outside in serious heat), but I can't figure...

  • Computer power supply (adapter) question

There are many surplus and refurb chargers / adapters for powering laptop computers on the market these days. Ebay, for example, has loads of them at good prices. And adapters from good brand names like Dell and HP seem to be quite reliable. By their ratings, these would appear to be useful for other projects. However, I was curious as to how consistent the low or no load voltage output was vs. the voltage at rated output. In the case of my Dell DA130PE1-00, a 130 watt adapter, there is just the "simple" rating if 19.5 DC volts @ 6.7...
  • Bodycam: Illinois Woman Laughs, Plays Dumb After Killing Two People in Deadly DUI Crash

Bodycam footage shows an Illinois woman laughing and playing dumb after she killed two people in a deadly DUI crash on April 10, 2022. Stephanie Melgoza blew three times over the legal limit shortly after failing every other sobriety test performed by East Peoria officers. "This doesn't happen. I go to Bradley," the clearly intoxicated woman said referencing the private university she was set to graduate from in the coming weeks. “You’re pathetic,” an officer said to Melgoza in the hospital when she continued to joke around after learning the two victims died. Melgoza pleaded guilty to two counts of...
  • Windows 11Pro upgrade on older machines?

A few related questions for our FReeper computer gurus: Has anyone tried upgrading a fairly competent* Windows computer with an older processor from Win 10 Pro to Win 11 Pro? Are significant "tricks involved?** Then were there any subsequent problems with following updates (immediately after installation of Win 11 Pro?) *The 1st computer in question has an i7 6600u processor, 16gb DDR4 RAM, and a 512GB NVME SSD. (Pretty quick machine.) Then my immediate family & I have a few slightly "lesser" Win 10 Pro machines (which run great, and is as my custom I'll likely keep Win 10 Pro...
