The College is critical in our Republic’s checks and balances. Incredible that Dr. Carson is so clueless! Without the College, tyranny is more likely. The founders were very clear about the dangers of straight democracy.

I agree with the article saying that criminals avoid the open carry people, and wait for a better victim. To me, that’s the essence of open carry -— personal protection.

If the rest of society benefits from any crime reduction, or protection fo 2A, great... but it’s primarily about warding off the bad guys in the first place, which you just can’t do with concealed carry.

“These two dipsticks are hurting the cause. That isn’t open carry, that is brandishing. The anti-gun crowd is going to have a field day when one of these morons walks into a Whataburger and gets double tapped by a CHL holder.”

So you’re saying that CHL holders may draw and start shooting just from these two walking into the place? Any instance you’ve found of something like that happening? Such far fetched “might” and “could” are the bread of butter of the anit-2A people. Please don’t contribute to that with speculative arguments.

“As long as she knows she’s outta reach!

Otherwise, she’s likely to be disarmed and have it used against her!

That’s the importance of “concealed” carry!

They don’t “know” that you have it, but it’s there if you need it.”

Her whole point is to have it visible as a DETERENCE. This works. Lots of reports of a bad guy avoiding a holstered gun once it was spotted. Never been a case reported nationwide of an open carry gun being grabbed from a citizen. Happens sometimes to cops, though.

“Most perps wont want anything to do with that. But, on the otherhand, some perp sees it and may take it from her, etc. etc.”

This has been discussed extensively on the open carry gun sites. Turns out there’s been ZERO instances recorded of that happening nationwide despite plenty of open carry going on. Happens sometimes (rarely) to cops, but not to civilians. It sounds reasonable to say “might” and “maybe” but the actual facts prove otherwise.

Yep ..... Weber, Drake, and Ringo are filling the shoes of the masters.

I’ll add Lois McMasters Bujold to the list for the series on Miles Vorkosigan. The stories are tight and easy to read, with great characters and a nice mix of humor.

I’ve been a sci-fi fan for over 50 years, and my “keepers” library is over 3k. The new stuff that I get urges to re-read are these four.

Tried many various carry methods; ended up using a shoulder bag with holster pocket for my .45ACP Glock 36.

Sure it’s kinda dorky, but hey... it’s comfy for an old fat guy who no longer worries much about the style police. And besides, I can carry my brolly, water bottle, etc.:

MYTH: Private ownership of guns is not effective in preventing crime

FACT: Every year, people in the United States use guns to defend themselves against criminals an estimated 2,500,000 times – more than 6,500 people a day, or once every 13 seconds.[243] Of these instances, 15.7% of the people using firearms defensively stated that they “almost certainly” saved their lives by doing so. Firearms are used 60 times more often to protect lives than to take lives.

FACT: The number of times per year an American uses a firearm to deter a home invasion alone is 498,000.[244]

FACT: In 83.5% (2,087,500) of these successful gun defenses, the attacker either threatened or used force first, proving that guns are very well suited for self-defense.

FACT: The rate of defensive gun use is six times that of criminal gun use.[245]

FACT: Of the 2,500,000 times citizens use guns to defend themselves, 92% merely brandish their gun or fire a warning shot to scare off their attackers.

FACT: Less than 8% of the time does a citizen wound his or her attacker, and in less than one in a thousand instances is the attacker killed.[246]

FACT: In one local review of firearm homicide, more than 12% were civilian legal defensive homicides.[247]

FACT: For every accidental death (802), suicide (16,869) or homicide (11,348)[248] with a firearm (29,019), 13 lives (390,000)[249] are preserved through defensive use.
    [243]

FACT: When using guns in self-defense, 91.1% of the time not a single shot is fired.[250]

FACT: After the implementation of Canada’s 1977 gun controls prohibiting handgun possession for protection, the “breaking and entering” crime rate rose 25%, surpassing the American rate.[251]

“The victim in this case clearly wanted police confrontation, since he had the means to record it. “

Well, not so obvious. If you open carry your defensive weapon, you should also carry your recorder for crap like this. Many of us here in Las Vegas carry both, and the police are getting to know we do. That helps keep the line drawn right.

Perhaps the “seems intimidated by the recoil” needs a bit more thought. I’d be reluctant to unnecessarily compromise the primary purpose of self-protection. To me, the .45 ACP is the very best defensive round.

For a lightweight carry weapon, consider the Glock 36. It’s one of the lightest (unloaded) firearms on the market. Gotta love the Glock’s point-and-shoot simplicity, reliability, and durability.

For those with small hands, it uses a single-stack magazine. I recommend adding the magazine extender, which gives you a better grip; otherwise, your pinky finger hangs loose. You only get 8 rounds (6+1+1) to carry, BUT you get a very lightweight carry weapon; and, after all, how many rounds are you realistically/probably/likely going to need?

It’s really about trade-offs. Getting used to the recoil may be your best overall choice.
