Scientists plan to disclose their findings about Kennewick Man on Thursday in Seattle, nearly a decade after the discovery of the 9,000-year-old skeleton that attracted worldwide interest and sparked a lengthy legal fight. "Kennewick's story is finally going to get told," said Cleone Hawkinson, president of Friends of America's Past. Hawkinson has been working for years to ensure Kennewick Man's bones would be studied by the top scientists in the country. Kennewick Man's bones are significant to scientists because they are considered one of the most complete ancient skeletons ever found. Scientists have theorized he was about 45 years old...

Subject: View of the World: Ramblings of an Old Man By Joe Galloway If you aren't interested in the ramblings of an old man, please delete now. If you're still there, pull up a chair and listen. Is there anyone else out there who's sick and tired of all the polls being taken in foreign countries as to whether or not they" like" us? The last time I looked, the word "like" had nothing to do with foreign policy. I prefer 'respect' or 'fear.' They worked for Rome, which civilized and kept the peace in the known world a hell...

HERMISTON -- Bill and Bonnie Kik couldn't have imagined charging a tenant a $300,000 security deposit on a piece of property they rented for $350 a month. But that's what it could cost them to clean up the property after the tenant died, leaving them to dispose half a ton of hazardous chemical waste. The tenant, Earl Myers, owned the Capmartin Mining Co., a small metals recycling operation next to the Daisy Milk Co. on Highway 395 in Hermiston. Myers was a miner of sorts. But he wasn't bulldozing and dredging the property looking for gold underneath the desert sage. ...

Hi, Freepers! Spunky & I (farmgirl) and my husband were outside Safeway today gathering signatures for the petition as well as canned food & donations for the farmers. Many expressed APATHY - that sickness we all know and dislike and IGNORANCE of the issue. Some were willing to be educated & some were not. Some were adamant about not signing anything. Some said they "sympathized" but refused to sign or help in anyway. HA! What good does lack of action do? One woman just got mad and said that her irrigation has been shut off for 4 whole days, so ...

The following is from the Washington State Farm Bureau. ( Great Job guys and gals ) THE TRUTH ABOUT SALMON IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST I. MYTH– Northwest salmon are threatened or endangered. FACT – There are six species of salmon or steelhead in the Northwest (pink, coho, chinook, chum, sockeye, and steelhead), and not one of those species is in danger of becoming extinct. In fact, contrary to common perception, none of those species is even listed for protection under the Endangered Species Act. These species are abundant in the wild, and we can produce as many more salmon ...

The Department of Energy plans small meetings by invitation only rather than public hearings to gather information to decide the fate of Hanford's Fast Flux Test Facility. Michael Holland, who's heading the review, will meet with opponents of restarting the reactor Friday in Portland and Monday in Seattle. Tuesday he will meet with supporters of the reactor in Richland. Numerous public hearings have been held on the reactor over the last decade. By holding smaller meetings with representatives of interest groups on both sides, participants hope to spend more time presenting their information and less time debating those who disagree ...

HELIX -- The discovery of a colony of endangered ground squirrels at the site of the Stateline Wind Power project has killed plans for 20 of the 151 wind turbines planned for the Oregon part of the project. Umatilla County Commissioner Bill Hansell said Friday that he and the other commissioners learned of the problem this week during a tour of the Helix site. A colony of Washington ground squirrels is forcing the change in plans. Florida Power and Light, the company seeking to develop the project, will cut 20 of the 151 Oregon turbines to avoid disrupting the squirrel ...

Bones reported missing from the Kennewick Man skeleton three years ago appear to have turned up at the Benton County Sheriff's Office. The Thursday discovery of the bones thought to be from the ancient remains may resolve a long-standing mystery once investigated by the FBI. County Coroner Floyd Johnson came across a "regular cardboard box" Thursday morning that may contain the high-profile bones. He said he was sorting through an evidence locker at the justice center in Kennewick. "It is speculated they are the missing bones," said Sheriff Larry Taylor. "We can't associate them with anything else." "I was surprised," ...
