I've heard he took it from a friend's father's gun safe. Haven't heard anything definitive. Anyone know?

D.C. police said the 18-year-old Spires — who might have been high on synthetic drugs — tried to grab a cellphone tucked into the waistband of a recent American University graduate headed to a gathering with friends. The two struggled, police said, and the terror began. Police and a witness interviewed said passengers trapped in the moving train huddled at both ends of the car and watched in horror as Spires allegedly punched 24-year-old Kevin Joseph Sutherland until he fell to floor, then stabbed him until he was dead. Court documents say the victim was cut or stabbed 30 or...

Looking for a good, balanced (read "not leftist") survey of the period, both political/legislative & social/cultural developments.Don't need anything with an agenda on either side.

I realize there are many here who would agree with this depiction, as well as many who would not.Regardless, I would hope that no one would accept or condone such an example of journalistic irresponsibility, to use such a term before the shooter has been arrested, charged or convicted.I am not sure why I am writing this here, perhaps it is an opus of a kind (a sadly weak one, to be sure), but this has scared me. I will file a complaint with the FCC, for whatever good that will do, but this, along the discussion of this case...

OK, I am working on my laptop, purchased less than two years ago. I have to type up a letter needing some formatting, so I fire up Microsoft Works that came preinstalled, for the first time. When I go to the word processor, it shows, in the "Task Pane" on the right, under "Recent Documents," several papers on Aristotlian and Eastern Rhetoric. Thing is, I wrote those papers in 2002, on a different laptop, one that I haven't had in my possession since at least 2004. The one computer on my home network that we might have had back then...

Venables and Thompson were aged 10 when they abducted James from a shopping centre in Bootle, Merseryside and killed him on a railway line, on February 13, 1993. Bugler’s body was found by children playing on a freight railway line 200 yards from Walton Lane police station, Liverpool, and more than two miles from the Strand shopping centre. Days later Venables and Thompson were arrested in connection with the murder of James, and later charged. They were the youngest to be charged with murder in the 20th century.

Dozens of loved ones and supporters gathered for the evening march, organized by International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement, that took participants to a police substation within sight of the two locations where Lovelle Mixon allegedly shot the veteran officers. Mixon, 26, also was killed in the confrontation. "I don't condone what he did, but it's bringing to light the frustrations between the community and the police," said Uhuru Movement member Kihad Deen. "This gives people a chance to speak their minds." As mourners walked through the streets, they chanted, "OPD you can't hide, we charge you with genocide!" There were...

A quarter of those attempting to care for their own teeth have tried to pull a tooth out with pliers and more than one in ten have tied string around the tooth and a door handle to remove it. Another 11 per cent have used household glue to stick down a crown or filling and six per cent have used chewing gum as an adhesive. Which? carried out an online poll of 2,631 adults in England earlier this year and it is not clear why people tried DIY dentistry, whether it is because they could not find an dentist or...

QUIETLY, behind the scenes, the Clinton Administration is preparing for the biggest regulatory crackdown of recent years. Attorney General Janet Reno is linking up with banking regulators and with HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros to end the supposed epidemic of discrimination against minorities in making home loans. The implications for society at large are ominous. Here, as in affirmative-action efforts in hiring, college admissions, and the drawing of voting districts, the Washington establishment is obsessed with "disparate impact," which it equates with racism. In the mortgage-lending area, there is ample evidence of disparate impact to feed this obsession. Data collected by...
