In a week where Cannon has received endorsements from President Bush and first lady Laura Bush, he released a new one Wednesday from one of the toughest critics of the Senate bill and its path-to-citizenship proposal, House Judiciary Committee chairman James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis. In a recorded message, Sensenbrenner said Cannon is "a major force in Congress." "And long before it was fashionable, Chris Cannon was working with me to stop illegal immigration. Just about everybody in Congress is talking about immigration, but Chris Cannon is one of the few doing the heavy lifting to actually solve the problem."

Just days before his Republican primary election, U.S. Rep. Chris Cannon is seeing more than $134,000 flowing into his war chest, much of it from organizations known to favor cheap immigrant labor. The pro-immigration groups have given Cannon, R-Utah, at least $58,200 in the past 12 days alone, a review of federal campaign reports shows. That includes at least $30,000 from agricultural interests — such as the California Farm Bureau and the Dairy Farmers of America. Additional money is coming from businesses known for hiring inexpensive labor —including Wal-Mart and the National Roofing Contractors Association.

As the 3rd Congressional District race rolls into its last full week before next Tuesday's primary, immigration reform has even more intensely become the pivotal issue. During a radio debate Monday on public radio station KCPW, tempers flared as Utah County businessman John Jacob and incumbent Chris Cannon tried to pin each other down on the subject.
