No one would accuse Jaroslav Flegr of being a conformist. A self-described “sloppy dresser,” the 53-year-old Czech scientist has the contemplative air of someone habitually lost in thought, and his still-youthful, square-jawed face is framed by frizzy red hair that encircles his head like a ring of fire. Certainly Flegr’s thinking is jarringly unconventional. Starting in the early 1990s, he began to suspect that a single-celled parasite in the protozoan family was subtly manipulating his personality, causing him to behave in strange, often self-destructive ways. And if it was messing with his mind, he reasoned, it was probably doing the...

The Oregon cat that attacked a baby and trapped his owners in their bedroom over the weekend won’t be losing one of his nine lives due to his antics, but he will be spending at least one of them undergoing therapy. Lux, the 22-pound Himalayan house cat that prompted his owners to call 911 after a violent outburst, will be visiting a pet psychologist after he takes a trip to see a veterinarian. The 4-year-old cat will remain a part of the family, despite his actions on Sunday. According to his owners, Lux has a “history of violence.” “We're not...

Maybe it's time to try a dog. A small dog. The 911 call in Portland, Ore., on Sunday began with a hint of embarassment, or at least of sense of self-awareness: "Yeah, hi, I have kind of a particular emergency here." Particular indeed. The voice on the line belonged to Lee Palmer, who called to report that his 22-pound Himalayan cat had gone berserk, attacked his 7-month-old child, and now had Palmer's family trapped inside their bedroom after the father responded by kicking the cat in the butt. The cat, in other words, had taken the family hostage. "We aren't...

Forget the Seahawks versus the Broncos. There's another big showdown scheduled for Sunday, one that involves ferocious, snarling, amped-up ... and absolutely adorable four-legged furry friends. Yes, for the first time in game-day history, this year there will be both Puppy and Kitten Bowls.

'Biggest cat I've ever seen,' as one animal control worker puts it, is now living at an Arizona animal shelter. Meatball is affectionate, but needs placement at an overweight animal facility and isn't eligible for adoption. He arrived at the Arizona animal shelter after being shuffled from home to home, according to KTVK-TV in Phoenix.

Meatball will head to the Companion Pet Clinic in Gold Canyon, Ariz., today, where Gable said he will get the full “feline fat farm” treatment, which includes a diet and exercise plan supervised by veterinarians. “Once he gets down to a weight they think is manageable, they will help find Meatball a new home,” Gable said.

A middle-aged woman (names withheld) yesterday in Lafia, Nasarawa State, publicly disowned her cat whom she had kept as a pet for seven years for what she termed “an unnatural sexual behavior” which she finds disturbing and “a contradiction of the laws of nature.” By this, the cat has made a record as the first cat to be so publicly declared gay and disowned by its owner. The cat, named Bull, was alleged to be in the habit of making sexual advances only to other male cats in the house even though there are several other female cats. Neighbours attested...

"This is a wild video. This squirrel apparently used to live with the cat as another pet in this woman’s home. The squirrel finally went out on its own, but still comes back from time to time to play with the cat."

Talk about cat climbing heaven! This incredible line of handcrafted designer cat climbing furniture comes from German company Goldtatze, which seems to translate to “Gold Paw”, a fitting name since any cat who is given such luxurious accommodations is certainly living the good life!

Cody Mann, 28, was charged Wednesday with two counts animal cruelty and animal torture after he told police he skinned his pet cat and baked it in the oven. Onions were also intended to be added as accompaniments to the cat, according to charges. In the bathtub, police found evidence of where the cat had been skinned, including red smear marks, hair and a steak knife. The cat's skin an entrails were found in the freezer, and a dish with partially eaten cat food and a water dish were also found in the apartment.

Here's a not-so-subtle reminder to leave stray felines alone. A woman who was apparently trying to protect her dog from an ornery cat that she'd taken in kicked a little snow in the feline's face. What could possibly go wrong? A lot. According to WJBK Fox 2 in Detroit, which aired the video, the cat lept onto the woman's face and clawed at her forehead. The catfrontation with its silent-movie-type visuals can be seen as a tad comic, but the woman in the video did suffer significant injuries, WJBK reports. The victim told WJBK that she had to go to...

I've long thought that part of why liberals succeed in villifying conservatives is because they're not afraid to use ridicule (whether deserved or not). In the interests of throwing that ridicule right back where it belongs, I offer this unabashed vanity: Photos of two of our cats in a slightly political pose. Please feel free to "steal" these and "occupy" any Internet space you care to with them!
