  • Bankrupt California: No money for crumbling roads, but billions for high-speed rail

    National Review ^ | 10/09/2012 | Victor Davis Hanson
I thought of my fellow Californian Energy Secretary Steven Chu last week, when I paid $4.89 a gallon in Gilroy for regular gas — and had to wait in line to get it. The customers were in near revolt, but I wondered against what and whom. I mentioned to one exasperated motorist that there are estimated to be over 20 billion barrels of oil a few miles away, in newly found reserves off the California coast. He thought I was from Mars. California may face the nation’s largest budget deficit at $16 billion. It may struggle with the nation’s second-highest...

Explanation: It's easy to get lost following the intricate filaments in this detailed mosaic image of faint supernova remnant Simeis 147 (S147). Also cataloged as Sh2-240, it covers nearly 3 degrees or 6 full moons on the sky. That's about 150 light-years at the stellar debris cloud's estimated distance of 3,000 light-years. Anchoring the frame at the right, bright star Elnath (Beta Tauri) is seen towards the boundary of the constellations Taurus and Auriga, almost exactly opposite the galactic center in planet Earth's sky. This sharp composite includes image data taken through a narrow-band filter to highlight emission from hydrogen...

Less than a year after Occupy Atlanta members clashed with police in riot gear in a downtown park, they're now protesting alongside officers to help a retired detective avoid losing her home to foreclosure. Activists joined current and retired Atlanta police Monday for a demonstration and discussion at the home of retired Atlanta police Det. Jaqueline Barber in Fayetteville, south of the city. Barber said she is under threat of eviction after her medical bills mounted, partly because of a diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a form of blood cell cancer. Barber said she spent part of her 20-year career "kicking...

Millions of pounds of unexploded bombs and other military ordnance that were dumped decades ago in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as off the coasts of both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, could now pose serious threats to shipping lanes and the 4,000 oil and gas rigs in the Gulf, warns two Texas A&M University oceanographers. William Bryant and Neil Slowey, professors of oceanography who have more than 90 years of combined research experience in all of the Earth's oceans, along with fellow researcher Mike Kemp of Washington, D.C., say millions of pounds of bombs are scattered over the...

The murder trial for Renato Seabra, the young model accused of castrating and killing his lover in 2011 began on Thursday, and the details coming out of it are quite gruesome. Prosecutors told the jury that Portuguese underwear model Seabra, 22, cut off 65-year-old fashion writer Carlos Castro's testicles using a corkscrew while Castro was still alive; in addition, he also allegedly choked him, bashed him over the head with a computer, and stomped on his skull in their Times Square hotel room, leaving sneaker prints. Lead prosecutor Maxine Rosenthal alleged that Seabra murdered Castro because the wealthy older man...

Former Detroit Lions great Alex Karras is in failing health and currently in hospice care. Karras, who played with the Lions from 1958-62 and then again from 1964-70 after sitting out a season for his role in a gambling scandal, is suffering from kidney failure and according to a report published Monday night in the Detroit Free Press, has been given a short amount of time to live. Lions team president Tom Lewand issued the following statement Monday night: "The entire Detroit Lions family is deeply saddened to learn of the news regarding the condition of one of our all-time...
  • Astronomy Picture of the Day -- Spherical Planetary Nebula Abell 39

    10/08/2012 8:17:39 PM PDT · by SunkenCiv · 8 replies
    NASA ^ | October 08, 2012 | (see photo credit)
Explanation: Ghostly in appearance, Abell 39 is a remarkably simple, spherical nebula about five light-years across. Well within our own Milky Way galaxy, the cosmic sphere is roughly 7,000 light-years distant toward the constellation Hercules. Abell 39 is a planetary nebula, formed as a once sun-like star's outer atmosphere was expelled over a period of thousands of years. Still visible, the nebula's central star is evolving into a hot white dwarf. Although faint, the nebula's simple geometry has proven to be a boon to astronomers exploring the chemical abundances and life cycles of stars. In this deep image recorded under...

How to Build a FLYING SAUCER Declassified documents reveal Air Force’s plan to build a UFO Here's a quirky find from the National Archives: the United States Air Force's 1956 plan to build a saucer-shaped aircraft that would zip across the skies with the greatest of ease. As the Archives explain of "Project 1794, Final Development Summary Report": The Air Force had contracted the work out to a Canadian company, Avro Aircraft Limited in Ontario, to construct the disk-shaped craft. According to the same report, it was designed to be a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) plane designed to reach...

Money really can’t buy you love — just ask this picky multimillionaire on Long Island. Lonely securities trader Larry Greenfield, 47, has plunked down more than $65,000 on high-end matchmaking services — all in the hopes of finding his ideal wife. After trying six different agencies over the past 12 years — and seeing 250 women — without success, the bachelor is blasting the expensive dating services as a “rip-off.” But the matchmakers are firing back, saying Greenfield wants women who are simply out of his league. Greenfield, who retired after a successful career at Opus Trading in Jericho, Long...
  • Crete, 3500-year-old Minoan building found: From same period as Knossos Palace, over 1,300 square m

In the past few years, the remains of an impressive and luxurious building from 3,500 years ago has seen the light. The building has two or three floors and some 80 rooms including workshops and storage rooms over a surface of 1,360 square metres and it is in excellent state. Sapouna-Sakellaraki told To Vima weekly that it is the first Minoan mountain settlement built in the same period as the Palace of Knossos. The archaeologist also said this is the largest summer residence found so far from the Minoan era. The structure of the building shows that it was not...

I just finished watching, Margaret Thatcher - The Iron Lady, on Netflix ... the British documentary, not the Meryl Streep movie. The kids watched the documentary and loved it. The documentary got me thinking about great world leaders in the 20th century. The ones that immediately came to mind were Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.Certainly there are others, but I will limit my list to these three.

A number of years ago, a TSA agent named Pythias Brown accidentally left a camera out of some luggage he was screening. Not wanting to be reprimanded for his mistake, he decided to avoid any problems by secretly taking the camera home. This event opened his eyes to how easy it was to pocket passengers’ belongings, and he began to steal more and more items in increasingly brazen thefts. After stealing over $800,000 worth of items from passenger bags over a four-year period, he was finally caught when he tried to auction off an easily identifiable camera belonging by a...
