The Springfield School Committee has given first-step approval to a policy that would make condoms available to students as young as 12. The committee voted 5-1 Thursday night in favor of the "Comprehensive Reproductive Health Policy" in an effort to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy. The policy also includes a provision for student counseling. The policy also allows parents "to deny permission (opt out) for access to condoms for their students." It still needs a second vote of approval before it is final.

Ronald Kessler reporting from Washington, D.C. — By now, we are used to Attorney General Eric Holder Jr.’s nonsensical testimony to Congress. Holder testified that he opposed Arizona’s illegal immigration legislation but had not read the new law. Holder testified that he believes the CIA’s enhanced interrogation methods such as waterboarding constitute “torture,” but he said he had not read the classified reports detailing what those techniques entail. After reopening Justice Department investigations into the CIA’s use of enhanced interrogation, Holder said that he had not read the memos of his own department’s lawyers explaining why no criminal laws had...

Citing risks to birds and to human health, roughly 100 environmental groups formally asked the federal Environmental Protection Agency this week to ban or at least impose limits on lead in the manufacturing of bullets and shotgun pellets for hunting or recreation. The use of such ammo by hunters puts about 3,000 pounds of lead into the environment annually and causes the death of 20 million birds each year from lead poisoning, said Jeff Miller, a conservation advocate at one of the groups, the Center for Biological Diversity. Consumption of meat from animals that are shot with lead bullets also...

This is from Fire Dog Lake Today I posted a diary about Black Agenda Report's new article, Social Media Scam Alert: Top Ten Ways to Tell Kony (2012) is PhonyWhile writing my last comment, something gelled in my mind. It had bothered me that the Kony 2012 video somehow believed that 100 US servicemen would get the job done. That seems too little, if you have a deadline of 1 year, and your target supposedly commands 30,000 armed militants. But it also seems way to little to constitute a serious escalation of US involvement in Africa (never mind whether us...

When the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, i.e., ObamaCare, was being debated in public and in Congress during 2010, Americans who supported life were told again and again that the legislation would not cover abortion. But like so many other aspects of Obama’s healthcare overhaul, what was promised and what was received turned out to be two different things – especially considering that many legislators read the bill only after they signed it into law. For example, the Obama administration has now made it clear that the individual mandate in ObamaCare will contain a charge—an “abortion premium mandate”—to forcibly...

At this point, anyone who does not see that we are living under a communist dictatorship of the current administration in Washington is woefully ignorant or willfully blind. One of the latest outrages against America’s free and sovereign states has—no surprise—come at the hands of the lawless Department of Justice (DOJ). The DOJ, under the racist Eric Holder, has made a mockery of its own name, because there is no justice in that department. It has become nothing more than a strong-arm, thug tool for Barack Obama (or whatever his name is). This week, the DOJ blocked Texas’ voter identification...

Bill Maher spoke with ABC’s Jake Tapper about whether there was a double standard for liberals using offensive language towards conservative women. In the interview, the HBO host responded to the criticism over his obscene remarks about former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, and defended calling her the c-word. Tapper asked Maher, in the wake of the controversy over Rush Limbaugh‘s comments about Sandra Fluke, whether there was a double standard, with the media accepting offensive language when it is used by liberals against conservative women. “Is that a fair comparison? You have certainly used offensive words to describe some politicians...

[Madison, Wisconsin] Gearing up for increased political activism on the cusp of a campaign to recall Governor Scott Walker, the State’s teachers’ union is being guided by the philosophy of radical leftist Saul Alinsky, the MacIver News Service has learned. On Friday and Saturday WEAC is sponsoring community organizing training seminars put on by the Industrial Areas Foundation. The IAF is a leftist community organizing network established in 1940 by Saul Alinsky. Alinsky, author of the book Rules for Radicals, remains a controversial political figure many years after his death. Opposed to many of the bloody revolutionary strategies supported by...

In just the past few months, Michigan Capitol Confidential has broken a plethora of stories showing the need for government scrutiny. * The SEIU has taken with the help of some Michigan government officials nearly $30 million in union dues from self-employed home health care aides and their disabled clients. * Hardly any tenured public school teachers in Michigan are ever removed from their jobs — even when guilty of criminal activity. * State government in Michigan has committed hundreds of millions of dollars to special tax favors and corporate welfare subsidies for “green jobs” that never materialize. * Many...

....Mr. Obama has already attended 103 fund-raisers, roughly one every three days since he kicked off his campaign last April (twice his predecessor's pace). The president faces other fund-raising challenges. For one, there are only so many times any candidate can go to New York or Hollywood or San Francisco for a $1 million fund-raiser. Team Obama is running through its easy money venues quickly. For another, many of Mr. Obama's 2008 donors are reluctant to give again. The Obama campaign itself reported that fewer than 7% of 2008 donors renewed their support in the first quarter of his re-election...

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: Obama has just announced that the United States and Britain are going to release oil from their Strategic Reserves. I didn't even know that Cameron was up for reelection. I did not know that he was up for reelection. That's why Obama's doing this. This is going to have absolutely no impact whatsoever. It is a purely political move from the guy who says, "We can't drill. We can't drill fast enough, can't drill soon enough." What does that mean? If we can't drill what it means is putting more oil on the market isn't gonna matter...

Proposed regulations by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce air emissions from hydraulic fracturing operations would drastically reduce shale gas drilling by 31 percent to 52 percent, or 12,700 to 21,400 wells, over the 2012 to 2015 time period, according to a study by the American Petroleum Institute (API). The API study also found that: 5.8 to 7.0 quadrillion Btu (Quads) of otherwise economic unconventional natural gas would not be developed and produced by 2015, a 9 percent to 11 percent reduction 1.8 billion barrels of otherwise economic unconventional liquids would not be developed and produced by 2015,...

The question has been asked: "Why are President Obama and the Democrats spending so much time and effort on universal coverage of contraception?" Surely they knew that there would be religious objection. Surely they did not think that such a decision would not go unchallenged. Why waste time and resources defending a controversial stance with so many other things going on? Recent polls show President Obama's approval numbers dropping among female voters, despite the "War on Women" attributed to the Republicans, and religious leaders have spoken openly from the pulpit, decrying the legality and morality of the contraception mandate, despite...

Britain has decided to cooperate with the United States in a bilateral agreement to release strategic oil stocks, two British sources said, in an effort to prevent high fuel prices derailing economic growth in an election year. A formal request from the United States to the UK to join forces in a release of oil from government-controlled reserves is expected "shortly" following a meeting on Wednesday in Washington between President Barack Obama and Prime Minister David Cameron, who discussed the issue, one source said. Britain would respond positively, the two sources said.

Schadenfreude, according to Webster, is “enjoyment obtained from the troubles of others.” It encapsulates the essence of women using government to force others to pay for their contraception. The fraud is in hustling the con as a women’s health issue. It makes sense only to abortion zealots who think pregnancy is a disease or a parasite. The grand dame of abortion rights, Minority House Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), held a little Republican bashing session with three members of the “House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee” on Feb. 23, which she and her media friends passed off as a “congressional hearing.” Pelosi...
