  • Tim Scott: ‘Our Original Sin Should Never Define Us’

During an appearance on this week’s broadcast of “Fox News Sunday,” Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) discussed the division in the country and how to overcome it. The South Carolina Republican U.S. Senator said the left was responsible by attempting to create a “grievance culture.” However, he argued the country should not be defined by its “original sin, but instead by its story of redemption. “So, you talk with an optimistic message, and we talked about how you are highlighting faith not only in the religious sense but that you want Americans to have faith in each other,” host Shannon Bream...

On Friday’s “PBS NewsHour,” New York Times columnist David Brooks reacted to the Senate Judiciary Committee’s confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson by stating that there are some “Republican senators who are not really senators. They’re cable TV hosts.” And ask questions like the definition of a woman.

Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn asked Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to define what a woman is during testimony late Tuesday night in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Jackson said that because she isn't a biologist, she could not give a definition. If confirmed, Jackson would be the first black female justice on the Supreme Court. The White House has repeatedly touted her nomination as historic precisely because she is a woman.

Define Socialism Discussions about socialism have been in vogue since Obama became President Obama. Many of those discussions reveal disagreement on what constitutes socialism regarding Obama’s socialist agenda for America. I want to dwell on that aspect of the discussion, the definition of socialism. I am weary of repeated attempts to establish an agreed upon definition of socialism. You will discover, as I have, that liberals and conservatives define socialism differently. To that end, I only support governments whose main function is to protect private ownership of capital and property rights. All definitions used to describe other governments is of...

This past summer our family enjoyed eight beautiful days in Norway on the National Review cruise. I found this video clip from the Islamic Peace Conference in Norway quite interesting since we were just in that picturesque country, home of the Vikings. Sometimes it’s just best to listen and let folks define themselves. The question is whether or not those of us in western civilization will continue to excuse away the issue. From this video clip, it seems we’re all quite wrong in using the term “extremist” to define only certain groups of Muslims.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The congressional election in November will define President Barack Obama's next two years in office as Republicans look likely to pick up seats and put their stamp on issues ranging from the huge budget deficit to economic recovery and immigration. Reuters correspondents will interview an influential line-up of newsmakers at next week's Reuters Washington Summit starting on Monday and they will take an in-depth look at the election and its implications for Obama. Elected in 2008 on the promise of changing Washington, Obama will be forced to scale back his ambitions if the Republicans, who have tried...

3.1 Information: A Fundamental Quantity The trail-blazing discoveries about the nature of energy in the 19th century caused the first technological revolution, when manual labor was replaced on a large scale by technological appliances—machines which could convert energy. In the same way, knowledge concerning the nature of information in our time initiated the second technological revolution where mental “labor” is saved through the use of technological appliances—namely, data processing machines. The concept “information” is not only of prime importance for informatics theories and communication techniques, but it is a fundamental quantity in such wide-ranging sciences as cybernetics, linguistics, biology,...

Mike Huckabee is anti-abortion, opposes gay marriage and doesn't believe in evolution. Does that make him a conservative Republican presidential candidate? Yes, said state Rep. David Rivera, a Republican who represents part of south Broward. "Conservative voters are seeing Mike Huckabee as the preeminent choice." Yet other presidential contenders question whether the former Arkansas governor is sufficiently conservative. On Sunday, Mitt Romney's Florida communications director, Kristy Campbell, e-mailed out a "research briefing" with the subject line, "Huckabee hearts higher taxes." "As Floridians learn more about his record, they are increasingly troubled by aspects related to the economy, illegal immigration, crime...
  • GOP Convention: Positions on Bond Measures will Define the GOP

Your trusty FlashReport Publisher has been to every State GOP Convention since 1988 and I can tell you that as far as these events go, this one is perhaps one of the most sparsely attended gatherings to which I have ever been. Why is the attendance so low? First and foremost, it is a weekend in August, which traditionally is vacation time for many people. That has been a factor with a number of people who told me ahead of time that they would not be here. But the "I'm on vacation" cases do feed into a bigger set of...

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s strategy against Democratic challenger Phil Angelides continues to unfold, off the air and on, as a new private poll by a major pollster unaffiliated with either campaign shows Schwarzenegger in the lead, 49 percent to 39 percent. The poll of nearly a thousand likely voters was completed last week. While Schwarzenegger works to translate his increased job approval among Latinos into electoral support and puts together a plan to revive the prison system, his all-important TV advertising strategy marches on across the airwaves around the state. His strategy is working. The four-point lead he enjoyed in mid-June...

SACRAMENTO (AP) - Each holds a statewide office that provides a built-in public relations platform, has millions of dollars in his campaign fund and a roster of big-name endorsements. What the two leading Democratic candidates for governor lack is household name recognition. That factor likely means a costly primary campaign between state Treasurer Phil Angelides and state Controller Steve Westly. "They both have to introduce themselves to the voters," said Thomas Hollihan, associate dean of the Annenberg School for Communications at the University of Southern California. "They are going to have to distinguish themselves from each other as well as...

TAORMINA, Italy, Feb. 10, 2006 – The challenges facing NATO today bring to mind words spoken by Dwight D. Eisenhower in his last televised address to the nation as president 45 years ago, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said here today. The secretary took part in two days of informal meetings with his NATO counterparts, as well as meetings of the NATO-Russia Council and the alliance's Mediterranean Dialogue countries. In his farewell address on Jan. 17, 1961, Eisenhower spoke of the threat posed by the Soviet Union. "As we think about the important role that NATO can play in the...

WASHINGTON, Sept. 1, 2005 – The National Guard troops reporting for duty in the Gulf region to help maintain security are trained professionals, many who serve as civilian law enforcement officers when not on military duty, the chief of the National Guard Bureau told reporters today. Army Lt. Gen. H Steven Blum said the Guard forces aren’t simply troops with no police skills pulled into the mission; they’re bringing solid expertise to the mission and an understanding that they’re supporting existing law enforcement authorities, not replacing them. “They are military police, trained badge-carrying law enforcement officers that discharge their duties...

While the State Department's Patterns of Global Terrorism—2003 report [1] labeled Iran "the most active state sponsor of terrorism in 2003," the Bush administration has yet to agree on a national security presidential directive to define U.S. policy toward the Islamic Republic.[2] Meanwhile, Tehran continues to edge closer to nuclear capability.[3]The following are excerpts from the 9/11 Commission Report, an unclassified version of which was released to the public on July 22, 2004.[4] The commission interviewed more than 1,000 people in ten countries and conducted an unprecedented review of U.S. intelligence. Among its findings, excerpted below, was evidence of a...

[Editor’s Note: The American Thinker believes in calling things by their proper names. Euphemism is a tool of misrepresentation and ultimately of control, stripping away accurate and evocative connotations, and substituting false associations. ....] The word “liberal” has a bad odor to it these days, a situation which the American left blames on conservatives, accusing them of “demonizing” it in the public mind. From their perspective, the average citizen is incapable of coming to an independent judgment, having observed decades of failed liberal policies. Instead, it must be evil conservatives who have propagandized the public into believing American liberalism is...
