That didn’t work either. So she grabbed her varmint rifle, chambered a round and took aim at the right rear tire as he sped out of their driveway. Now, high school physics and chemistry teacher and mom Karen Vondemkamp faces two felony counts for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one felony count for aggravated battery in January trial even though, she said she fired into the ground. “As...

WAILUKU - A man who said he was defending himself from being hit with an electric toothbrush when he struck his former girlfriend, breaking her nose, has been acquitted of a felony assault charge. A 2nd Circuit Court jury deliberated for less than an hour before returning the verdict Thursday afternoon, finding 31-year-old Agenhart Nahoopii, of Makawao, not guilty of second-degree assault. "We're happy with the jury's verdict," said defense attorney William Sloper. "We're disappointed that the prosecution is bringing these cases with little or no evidence." Nahoopii was arrested after Therisa Amandola went to the Kihei Police Station, where...

A Dunwoody woman who fired six shots into her naked and unarmed husband was acquitted on all charges Friday by a DeKalb County jury. Lona Scott, 47, the mother of two, had told jurors that if she hadn’t killed her husband, Cliff, he would have killed her. Fighting back tears, Scott mouthed “thank you” to jurors as not-guilty verdicts were read aloud to murder, felony murder, voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and illegal firearm possession charges. She then hugged her lawyer, Brian Steel, and was soon embraced by relatives and friends who sat through the weeklong trial. “I’m so very happy,”...

WASHINGTON – The U.S. was slow to take seriously the threat posed by homegrown radicals and the government has failed to put systems in place to deal with the growing phenomenon, according to a new report compiled by the former heads of the Sept. 11 Commission. The report says U.S. authorities failed to realize that Somali-American youths traveling from Minnesota to Mogadishu in 2008 to join extremists was not an isolated issue. Instead, the movement was one among several instances of a broader, more diverse threat that has surfaced across the country. "Our long-held belief that homegrown terrorism couldn't happen...

Kristin Ruggiero of New Hampshire figured it would be a slam dunk. The gambit worked like a charm during the divorce hearing; now she would bring the case to criminal court. Her husband Jeffrey, an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard, was an incorrigible batterer, at least that’s what she led to the judge to believe. That got him convicted of criminal threatening, and she won custody of their 7-year-old daughter. But Kristin Ruggiero wasn’t finished. One day, the woman bragged to her startled ex, “I took all your money, I took your daughter, and now I’m going to take...

A Raleigh County attorney and gun rights advocate says he may be able to help restore the right to own guns to those convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence. His efforts don't sit well with the leader of a local domestic violence awareness group, however. Under federal and state law, a person convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor domestic violence crime is prohibited from owning a gun. Jim Mullins, a lawyer in Beckley, has been running ads in local newspapers offering to help domestic violence offenders overcome that law. Under the law, it is possible to petition the court to...

The great struggles of the twentieth century between liberty and totalitarianism ended with a decisive victory for the forces of freedom—and a single sustainable model for national success: freedom, democracy, and free enterprise. In the twenty-first century, only nations that share a commitment to protecting basic human rights and guaranteeing political and economic freedom will be able to unleash the potential of their people and assure their future prosperity. People everywhere want to be able to speak freely; choose who will govern them; worship as they please; educate their children—male and female; own property; and enjoy the benefits of their...
