"The chemist who helped Russia's athletes benefit from banned substances kept very detailed notes, which the International Olympic Committee is relying on as it decides what penalities to impose on Russia before the Pyeongchang Games." Olympic officials will announce their decision Dec. 5. If they do not bar Russia completely from the coming Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, they are likely to keep all Russian emblems out of the games: The Russian flag would not fly at the opening and closing ceremony, Russian athletes would compete in neutral uniforms and the Russian anthem would not be played. Such restrictions,...

The honorary president of Russia’s Olympic Committee believes the man responsible for exposing the country’s state-sponsored doping program should be executed. Grigory Rodchenkov, the former director of Moscow’s anti-doping lab, exposed the scheme in 2016 after fleeing to the United States. “Rodchenkov should be shot for lying, like Stalin would have done,” Olympic official Leonid Tyagachev said on a Russian radio station, according to the Guardian. Tyagachev’s remark may sound like hyperbole but Russia has a long history of killing political opponents—two former doping officials died under mysterious circumstances last year—and Rodchenkov fled to the U.S. over fears for his...

The prospect of Russia boycotting an Olympics for the first time since 1984 is a step closer after its national anti-doping agency failed to have its suspension lifted. The Russian Anti-Doping Agency (Rusada) was declared noncompliant with the World Anti-Doping Agency’s rules when the details of Russia’s systemic cheating first emerged in November 2015. With the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang just 12 weeks away, Thursday’s Wada foundation board meeting in Seoul was the last scheduled chance for Rusada to convince anti-doping leaders it had met the terms of a “road map” to compliance.

Xue Yinxian is a 79-year-old former Chinese doctor seeking asylum in Germany after revealing that "more than 10,000" Chinese athletes were taking performance enhancing drugs in the 1980s and 1990s as part of a systemic doping scandal by the country, he tells German broadcaster ARD. The doctor claims that systemic doping had its roots with athletes as young as 11 years old and was used in major Olympic sports including swimming, diving, track and field, table tennis, soccer, volleyball, basketball and more. Xue worked closely with Chinese national teams in the 1970s. Xue said she was dismissed from her job...

Donald Trump suggested without evidence Saturday that Democrat Hillary Clinton might have been on drugs at their most recent debate and that the election is “rigged” against him, adding a new round of unsubstantiated assertions to an increasingly scathing campaign.

Donald Trump on Saturday repeated his argument that the election is rigged against him and returned to his suggestion that Democratic rival Hillary Clinton appears physically unfit to be president -- so both of them should take a drug test. “Looks to me like a rigged election,” Trump said at a rally in New Hampshire. “The election is being rigged by the liberal media to push outright lies to rig the election." Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, has since this summer hinted at the possibility of voter fraud in big, Democrat-run cities like Philadelphia swinging the election for Clinton and...

Donald Trump suggested Saturday that his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, has been "getting pumped up" with performance-enhancing drugs and challenged Clinton to take a drug test before the final debate next week. Trump argued that Clinton was more energetic during the beginning of their debate last Sunday, but lost her steam by the end of the debate. ... RIO DE JANEIRO — Feels good, doesn’t it, to slap water in the face of the rest of the world and go all jingoist? Lilly King kept America strong and pure when she sent a blast of chlorine into the eyes of that Russian criminal mastermind Yulia Efimova and prevented her from melting the earth’s core. Or something like that, right? But there is a disquieting aspect to the narrative going here at the Olympics. It’s not a moment of perfect American moral clarity. King, 19, is a swaggeringly great swimmer, but the rivalry between her and 24-year-old Efimova in...

Lilly King put her money where her mouth is on Monday night, romping to victory in the 100m breaststroke final after she called her closest Russian rival a drugs cheat - and took another shot at her minutes after securing gold. Yulia Efimova, who was caught in a doping scandal, was booed when her name was announced in the women's 100m breaststroke final. King started strongly and maintained the lead — with Efimova trailing right behind her. 'We can still compete clean and do well in the Olympic games — and that's how it should be,' said King after finishing...

American swimmer Lilly King had some choice words, as well as a finger wag, Sunday night for Russian counterpart Yulia Efimova, who was twice banned for doping but was surprisingly reinstated for the Rio Olympics Saturday. Efimova, the reigning world champion in the 100 meter breaststroke, has a long history with using substances to get a leg-up on her competition. She was suspended for 16 months in 2013 when anabolic substances were found in her system, and received a provisional ban (which was later lifted) earlier this year for using meldonium. in their rulings on Russia's state-sponsored doping scandal, The...

Officials are considering banning the Russian national team from this summer’s Paralympics after the World Anti-Doping Agency has exposed evidence of a state-run doping scheme that has also put the country's status for the Olympics in jeopardy, according to the New York Times. At least 35 positive doping tests by Russian Paralympians had been covered up by the Russian sports ministry since 2011, according to the Times. An additional 19 doping samples from the 2014 Paralympics in Sochi were tampered with, much like the samples of other Russian athletes at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Cycling officials on Saturday detained a bicycle ridden during the cyclocross world championships in Zolder, Belgium, to investigate "technological fraud," and on Sunday they confirmed the bike had a concealed motor in the frame. The International Cycling Union said the bike belonged to 19-year-old Belgian Femke Van den Driessche. It is the first official case of "mechanical doping" or "bike doping" at cycling's highest level. If used at the right time during a race even a small motor can provide a critical burst of power and speed.

In an effort to build an audience - and credibility - Al Jazeera America has staked its reputation on deep dive investigations and topics that mainstream TV news divisions have largely abandoned amid shrinking news budgets. And The Dark Side fit squarely in that wheelhouse. It was an undercover probe about doping in sports that fingered several high-profile current athletes including the Denver Bronco's superstar quarterback Peyton Manning. But now AJAM finds itself on the hot seat as the sources of some of the allegations have begun to recant amid furious denials from the athletes. "The allegation that I would...

The day before Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s highly anticipated bout against Manny Pacquiao, agents for the United States Anti-Doping Agency (Usada) conducted a surprise drug test on Mayweather and found evidence of an illegal IV being used on the boxer, according to Thomas Hauser of SBNation. The fluids that Mayweather's camp says were administered to the fighter — saline and vitamins to combat dehydration — are not banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which sets the standards used by Usada. The use of the IV, however, as well as the decisions by Usada to not notify the Nevada Athletic Commission...

t was the story he had denied. The story Emma O'Reilly went some way to telling when she exposed Lance Armstrong as a drug cheat. But when the conversation moved to the subject of that positive test in 1999, he not only agreed with her that she had been right but went a stage further. O'Reilly always believed there was a bigger conspiracy and with her sitting before him he finally revealed the full scale of the cover-up, naming Hein Verbruggen as a central figure in his escape from punishment. Certainly, Armstrong used this opportunity to his full advantage. He...

Armstrong was open about his doping with Crow, never suspecting that she would tell anybody about it. "Rather than try to hide the transfusion from her, Armstrong was completely open about it," the authors write, according to the Daily News. "He trusted that Crow would have no desire to tell the press or anyone else about the team's doping program. He explained that it was simply part of the sport - that all cyclists were doing the same thing."
