On Election Day 2008, Maruse Heath, the leader of Philadelphia's New Black Panther Party, stood in front of a neighborhood polling place, dressed in a paramilitary uniform. Within hours, an amateur video showing Heath, slapping a black nightstick and exchanging words with the videographer, had aired on TV and ricocheted across the nation. Among those who saw the footage was J. Christian Adams, who was in his office in the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division in Washington. "I thought, 'This is wrong, this is not supposed to happen in this country,' " Adams said. "There are armed men in front...

President Barack Obama is taking his popular wife with him to three campaign stops in the pivotal swing state of Ohio Sunday, but a new Associated Press Poll shows that may be too little, too late with just over two weeks remaining before critical congressional elections. The survey found that the coalition of voters that swept Obama into the White House just two years ago — aching for change after the eight-year presidency of Republican George W. Bush — has crumbled. SNIP The Associated Press-Knowledge Networks survey found that one-fourth of those who voted for Obama two years ago are...

If you don't like crowds and prefer the decibel level of a monastery, we've got a spot for you to spend Election Day today: Your local polling place. "It's going to be pretty quiet there,'' said David Tom, San Mateo County's elections manager. There are two main reasons: More and more people every year are casting their ballots by mail. And at the same time, an antiquated California law requires counties to staff polling places as if that weren't the case. The state has decreed that each polling precinct should have no more than 1,000 voters. And even if a...

Despite bowing to White house pressure to endorse her former Democratic opponent, a Siena poll is showing that most of Dede Scozzafava's have shifted toward Conservative Candidate Doug Hoffman. The latest numbers show a six point leap for the conservative candidate, while the Democratic party's Owens has remained the same. ”Hoffman continues to demonstrate momentum, picking up six points since Scozzafava pulled out,” said Siena pollster Steven Greenberg. “It appears, however, that the majority of Scozzafava’s supporters have gone to neither Hoffman nor Owens, but rather into the undecided column, which has doubled since Scozzafava ended her candidacy.”

Good news: Someone in the Justice Department took the Election Day intimidation tactics of the New Black Panther Party in Philadelphia seriously. The DOJ filed an injunction today against the NBPP bullies over their billyclub-wielding thuggishness at a Philly polling place, which was captured on video: Remember?

I’m leaving blow-by-blow coverage of election results to the approximately one million sites that will be looking at them in detail all through the night, but in the true spirit of election day, here’s a really nasty trick to consider. As an article by Scott Berinato in this month’s Wired magazine describes, distributed denial-of-service attacks can shut down the web servers of companies and organizations within minutes, even if they’ve taken measures to protect themselves. How do they work? Hackers penetrate inadequately protected computers (yours?) and install software (a “bot”) that hides in the background until it’s triggered by a...

Are the Exit Pollsters Up To Old Tricks?I noticed this account of an exit pollster in Stafford, Virginia: 08:32 – AP doing exit polling in Stafford. Talking 4 to 1 to minorities over whites at a Republican precinct (Falmouth). Expect it to be skewed. Don’t trust the exit polls as they start to trickle out. Only an anecdote, but not promising. Are the exit pollsters aiming for egg on their faces two presidential races in a row? 11/04 04:02 PM

The Latest From Inside McCain HQ November 04, 2008 11:30 AM ET | James Pethokoukis | I just talked to one of my best Team McCain sources who told me that heading into today all the key battleground polls were moving hard and fast in their direction. The source, hardly a perma-optimist, thinks it will be a long night, but that McCain is going to win. So add this with the new Battleground poll (Obama +1.9 only) and the rising stock market...

Altered States by: Lance Nation, November 04, 2008 As the presidential race tightens, the possibility of another Bush v. Gore increases. Over the past eight years, no significant election reforms have been enacted at the federal or state level to prevent the chaos of the 2000 election. However, Dr. Edward B. Foley has the “solution” for contested elections. Director of Election Law @ Moritz, Dr. Foley “[favors] legislation in each state to place the authority to adjudicate election contests in a specialized Elections Court.” This idea stems from the 1962 gubernatorial race in Minnesota. “In the 1962 race for Governor...

AND NOW . . . amidst billowing clouds of fragrant, aromatic first- and second-hand premium cigar smoke. . . it is time for . . . that harmless, lovable little fuzz ball, the highly-trained broadcast specialist, having more fun than a human being should be allowed to have, from behind the golden EIB microphone, firmly ensconced in the prestigious Attila-the-Hun chair at the Limbaugh Institute of Advanced Conservative Studies, the Mandarin of Talk Radio, with talent on loan from G-d, at the cutting-edge of societal evolution, with half his brain tied behind his back — just to make it fair,...

I am going to momentarily behave as a liberal, meaning I shall emote as a means of making my point. Please feel free to take this preponderance of cartoonish Obama-coronating polling data that is currently sticking like spackle to every website and headline in all of creation and shove them into a place where even the sunshine wouldn’t dare go without bodyguards. Take each end every one of these “objective” missives about what the first hundred days of an Obama presidency would be like and choke on it like John Belushi chowing down on a chicken bone, doing his best...
