The 4-alarm inferno at A-1 Custom Packaging started just before 10 a.m. local time in the Spring Branch neighborhood. It began as a house fire before moving to the warehouse, Houston police told NBC News. No injuries were immediately reported. Officials believed there was ammunition and chemicals with a possibility of igniting and exploding at the scene, where about 175 firefighters were dispatched. People in the area were being asked to shelter in place, although a nearby elementary school and businesses were being evacuated. The Department of Homeland Security must move faster to test explosive detectors that can sense compounds that have been used in recent extremist attacks and to determine if the devices can be installed at airports and train stations across the country, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said. For about eight years, federal officials have funded the development of the electronic trace detection system, which would be capable of continuously monitoring an area for vapor from explosives, including the bomb-making material TATP. But while the technology has proved successful in laboratory tests, it hasn’t been scheduled for government field tests until the...

The announcement by the Belgian authorities that they had confiscated more than 30 pounds of the explosive TATP from a dwelling used by the attackers in Brussels was, in some ways, an expected development. But it contained one detail that bomb-disposal technicians and security officials regarded with surprise: the quantity of the particular explosive involved.TATP, also known as triacetone triperoxide, is a white, crystalline explosive also used in the attacks in Paris in November, though it caused few casualties compared with the terrorists’ assault rifles. Highly unstable and sensitive to shock, friction and heat, it breaks down quickly in air....

The two nail-laced blasts that tore through the Brussels airport Tuesday morning shredded people in the departure area as the shock wave shattered windows and ripped tiles from the ceiling. A little more than an hour later, another explosion peeled open the side of a metro car in the middle of the city, killing and maiming dozens more. Belgian investigators are starting to piece together how a cell of Islamic State operatives managed to build at least three bombs and kill at least 31 people in a city that has been on high alert since the Paris attacks last fall....

Democratic presidential candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called it "unrealistic to say we're going to completely shut down our borders to everyone" after the Brussels terror attacks. "It was just terrible horror. The idea that the terrorists are continuing to strike at the heart of Europe and now Brussels and the number of casualties from what looked to be fairly sophisticated, coordinated attacks is deeply distressing," Clinton told MSNBC this morning. "We've got to stand in solidarity with our European allies as they have stood with us on so many occasions. And we have to intensify our...

Though Elwood Hansen's rural property had both ample amounts of fireworks and dynamite on it, authorities don't think the explosives had anything to do with what blew up his solidly built, 140-year-old stone house while he was inside. The 79-year-old Bridgewater Township man was likely asleep in his bedroom when he was killed in the blast around 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning, said Michigan State Police Sgt. Chuck Bachmeier. At least one of his two dogs also died in the explosion. The other was unaccounted for. No one else was injured, according to Bachmeier. A neighbor told The News Hansen, who...

Politics: President Obama removed Cuba as a state sponsor of terror Friday, forgetting the dictatorship's long record of killing, smuggling and, yes, terror. If this is the new standard, why not just scrap the list entirely? The lifting of Cuba from the list of nations that support terrorism was a farce that may well come back to the haunt the United States. After all, the ruling Castro regime that benefits from it in the name of normal relations with the U.S. and new access to World Bank loans is the same regime that once tried the first 9/11, aligning itself...
