Doesn't this say more about the status of western culture than just about anything you've read recently? Telegraph: ********* When it comes to Christmas, it might be safe to assume children will ask Santa for an extensive list of toys, games and treats. But a survey of their typical lists for Father Christmas has shown many have more serious concerns, requesting "a dad" instead. A study of 2,000 British parents found most children will put a new baby brother or sister at the top of their Christmas list, closely followed by a request for a real-life reindeer. A "pet horse"...

Recently, I posted a thread on what I consider to be at least one of the causes of Adam Lanza's state of mind when he went into Sandy hills School and killed little children. My suggestion was that the lack of a father living with his mother had at least a small part to play in his state of mind. Needless to say, several people were angry at the mere suggestion that children growing up without fathers might play a role in the anger issues young men face today. Fair enough. No one can say that the mental issues Adam...

I wrote this tonight and just need to share it. Maybe some of you have family members with this insidious disease too. Hello; it's good to see you. I don't remember why it's good to see you, but it is. I know I like you, and my eyes crinkle in evident delight that you are here. Immediately I want to rattle off something witty and topical, But I don't remember the words right. So I look for something I can see, and relate it to you. It's good to see you. My smile is not like my smile of before....

Last month, Ray Smith was hoping to get together with his son, Sean, whom he had not seen for 15 years. But, it became devastatingly apparent, after seeing a story on CNN about the four Americans killed in Libya, that he would never see his son alive again. “I seen all these coffins come off the plane,” Smith recalled. “Four of them. Then I saw his picture in the corner. They mentioned Sean Smith was one of those killed.” Smith received this gut-wrenching news via television, prior to receiving a call, a form letter and a flag from Undersecretary of...

On Friday’s “America Live” on the Fox News Channel, Chip Woods, the father of slain Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods said the lack of response from the Obama administration on Sept. 11, 2012 showed “cowardice.” And he labeled as “murderers” the administration officials who stalled the decision to act immediately to the terrorist attack that claimed his son’s life, and lied about it afterward. While Woods disapproves of the White House’s response to the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, he told host Megyn Kelly that his decision to speak out had nothing to do with politics. “This is...

Pennsylvania man Jorge Colon is facing multiple felony charges after police say he scalded his infant daughter for being fussy in her bath. Police say the baby remains in critical condition at the Burn Unit at Crozer-Chester Medical Center. Colon was allegedly bathing his one-month-old daughter, Kiara, a bath when the child was burned from the right side from her neck to her right foot. When questioned, police say Colon told them Kiara had been collicky for almost a month and had become particularly irritable. He went on to say that when Kiara began to fuss during the bath he...

Forgive me for rehashing Wednesday night’s debate yet again, but some of the postmortems impel me to do so. I’m not talking about the comical excuses for Obama’s failure like the poor fellow who thought Mitt Romney was carrying a crib sheet and then had to admit it was a handkerchief. Or the well-known massage enthusiast who argued the difference between the candidates was due to the Denver altitude as if this were not a presidential debate but an abruptly scheduled NBA doubleheader. No, I’m talking about the more serious explanations for the president’s incompetence – that Obama was either...

Father Jerome Murphy-OConnor, a renowned expert on the New Testament, has what some are referring to as "a bold view of what happened in the Gardner of Gethsemane." I would call it something else entirely: asinine. Demonic even. How about blasphemous? In an article for the Catholic Herald which may be found here, Fr. OConnor is quoted as having said that Jesus suffered a "nervous breakdown" and adds, "When realizing the imminence of His own demise, Jesus was deeply distraught and troubled, out of control." A nervous breakdown, otherwise referred to as a "mental breakdown," is statically defined as "a...

Move over, tiger moms. Dads can play an even more significant role in the development of happy, well-adjusted children than do mothers, a new study indicates. Just in time for Father's Day, findings from a large-scale review of research shed light on how parental acceptance and rejection can affect the personalities of progeny well into adulthood. "In our 50 years of research in every continent but Antarctica, we have found that nothing has as strong and consistent an effect on personality development as does being rejected by a parent—especially by a father—in childhood," said study co-author Ronald Rohner, director of...

Shortly after being elected first black president of Harvard Law Review, Barack Obama signed a deal to write a memoir of his life. Remarkably literate, given it was written so young, the book revolves around his quest for identity as the child of a white teenage mother and an African father who walked out when he was just two. Despite titling it Dreams From My Father, the absent parent was little more than a shadow. ‘After a week of my father in the flesh, I had decided that I preferred his more distant image,’ reflected Barack Obama on the short...

A bill presented in the House would allow the adoption of a child to take place without the consent of the father, if he has not previously developed a consistent and substantial relationship with the child. The definition of “consistent and substantial relationship,” has not been specifically defined in Missouri law. The bill seeks to express clearly the actions a father must take to develop a consistent and substantial relationship. Unless actively thwarted from doing so by the mother, the father must provide: Consistent prenatal financial support Payment of prenatal and natal medical care for the mother and baby Child...

A Facebook post went viral Wednesday after the father of a 15-year-old girl decided her online activity was disrespectful, but it’s bringing her a kind of fame she probably never imagined. Her punishment? Eight exploding, hollow-point rounds from a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol, straight into her laptop.

The monster who killed himself and his two young sons in a Washington house fire two years after his wife vanished reportedly attacked the boys with a hatchet before setting the blaze. The sons of Josh Powell, who were just 7 and 5, suffered what police described as "chop wounds" to their heads and necks before the Graham, Wash., home went up in flames as a helpless social worker looked on Sunday. The cause of death for all three is believed to be smoke inhalation. The grisly new details emerged as investigators combed through the charred rubble of the home...

Seeing Jesus in the Gospel of John Seeing Jesus in the Gospel of John | An Excerpt from On The Way to Jesus Christ | Joseph Cardinal RatzingerThe farewell discourses of Jesus, as the Gospel of John presents them to us, hover in a singular way between time and eternity, between the present hour of the Passion and the new presence of Jesus that is already dawning, because the Passion itself is at the same time his "glorification" as well. On the one hand, the darkness of the betrayal, of the denial, of the abandonment of Jesus to the ultimate...

A mother who "deliberately and unjustifiably frustrated" a father's attempts to visit his child was appropriately stripped of child support and primary custody, an appellate panel in Albany has held. The Appellate Division, Third Department, unanimously affirmed a Schuyler County Family Court judge in a case where the custodial mother had repeatedly hindered her estranged husband's efforts to establish relations with his daughter, even though the father made no attempt to enforce his visitation rights for six years. Luke v. Luke, 510880, centers on a child born in 2001 to Melvin W. and Heidi L. Luke. The Lukes, who are...

Nearly twelve years have passed since he was pulled from a closet by a masked machine gun wielding US agent. Now Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban boy who survived a perilous raft journey that killed his mother and became a symbol of troubled relations between the United States and Cuba, is an adult. Gonzalez currently studies at a military academy on the island and took part in an 18th birthday celebration Tuesday in his native city of Cardenas alongside his father, according to images broadcast on the nightly news.
