For the past two weeks, with a big hat tip to Dr. Helen Smith who diagnosed the phenomenon last fall, we’ve had a fascinating and spirited discussion here about the “Going Galt” movement that’s catching on nationwide. There’s now even a Twitter hashtag for the phenomenon: #goinggalt. My email box (especially after publication of my recent syndicated column on the subject) continues to fill up with letters from readers choosing in large and small ways to go Galt. Reader Ron Ruffer of Pa. e-mails: Dear Ms. Malkin, First I would like to say that I very much enjoy your commentary...

Could Obama's carbon emission policies re-create the economic conditions that led to Southern secession?Who Pays for Cap and Trade? (Wall Street Journal, 3/9/09, A18) describes how Barack Obama's proposed carbon taxes and cap-and-trade mandates will affect different regions of the United States. The table shows per capita carbon emissions in tons. Highest are Wyoming, North Dakota, Alaska, West Virginia, Montana, Louisiana, Indiana, Nebraska, Kentucky, and Iowa. All are either Red States or conservative Blue States. Lowest are NJ, FL, WA, OR, MA, CT, VT, CA, NY, and RI. All except Florida are reliable Blue States with high populations of latte-sipping...

A hidden effect of the November 4 elections and the national events that preceded them during this past year is perhaps best called the “John Galt Effect” in honor of Ayn Rand’s famous character in Atlas Shrugged.  It is occurring to a very significant extent. Our technological civilization stands upon the shoulders of many generations of free Americans and the great accomplishments that they bequeathed to us. Among those Americans and their counterparts in other countries have been a small special group of people whose unusual genius, work ethic, and love for their specialties were especially outstanding. These men,...

MADISON, Wis. (Legal Newsline) - Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen's lawsuit to force officials to cross-check information on voter rolls before the Nov. 4 election was tossed out of court Thursday. Dane County Circuit Judge Maryann Sumi dismissed the lawsuit, saying Van Hollen lacks the authority to sue the state Government Accountability Board to force it to comply with the federal Help America Vote Act of 2002, known as HAVA. Sumi said only the U.S. attorney can sue to enforce the federal voter law.

A slave is defined as somebody who is forced to work for somebody else for no payment and is regarded as the property of that person. Joe the Plumber was recently informed by Obama that he does not belong to himself. He is expected to work to make as much money as he can so that it can be taken from him to give to people who do not work hard and “need” the money more than he does. Joe didn’t look too happy about being informed that the fruits of his labor do not belong to him, that they...
  • NIAID scientists identify new cellular receptor for HIV

A cellular protein that helps guide immune cells to the gut has been newly identified as a target of HIV when the virus begins its assault on the body's immune system, according to researchers from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). “The identification of this new receptor opens up new avenues of investigation that may help further elucidate the complex mechanisms of the pathogenesis of HIV infection,” says NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., chief of the Institute’s Laboratory of Immunoregulation (LIR) and senior author of the new study....
