The Minneapolis-based discount chain is running an ad featuring two grooms as an invitation to other gay and lesbian couples to set up their wedding registries at Target. It all started when president and COO Dan Cathy made statements against gay marriage. and now, things have ramped up into a national debate. Rev. Billy Graham, the legendary evangelical minister, has now entered the fray, coming to the aid of Chick-fil-A. The 93-year-old is against gay marriage, and has been strangely polarizing lately. Earlier this year, he publicly endorsed a constitutional amendment to ban it in North Carolina.

Apparently, Mayor Rahm Emanuel agrees, saying, “Chick-fil-A values are not Chicago values.” Thomas M. Menino, Boston’s mayor, has also vowed to deny the restaurant chain a permit to build there. The problem with this sanctimonious dissing of Chick-fil-A is that there is no proof the business has discriminated against gay couples, let alone any of its customers or employees. “Gay” is a word that came out of the slang of homosexuals and established itself as a noun and an adjective meaning primarily “male homosexual” but also on occasion “female homosexual” in which case it becomes a synonym for “lesbian.” You can’t blame them for wanting a short term in general use in place of a five-syllable tongue-twister.
