A man denied a concealed carry permit and a Second Amendment group he is a member of filed a federal lawsuit last week arguing New York’s licensing scheme is unconstitutional. Training for armed self-defense is like preparing for a natural disaster, according to the research of two Oregon State University professors. The researchers set out to understand how Americans who keep and carry handguns for self-defense mitigate the risks involved, such as accidentally shooting oneself, inaccurately identifying a threat or being clumsy. The professors identified ways that handguns owners work to diminish those risks, including through training, mental rehearsing and routine maintenance. Last week, we reported on a gun buyback program in San Francisco that was offering cash for guns, rather than the gift cards that are so often handed out. Over the weekend, the buyback took place, netting 271 guns, as well as a few other items. “We got everything that you can name that could destroy a whole universe, and we get rid of them within hours,” said Rudy Corpuz Jr. with United Playaz, a community group that helped organize the buyback with police. The buyback was held on Howard Street in the South of Market Area when police showed off this military-grade bazooka. Officers also collected handguns, shotguns, and high-powered rifles. Gabby Giffords asked two web hosting companies on Friday to shut down websites selling parts and machines that help make untraceable homemade firearms known as “ghost guns.” The Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence asked the providers that host GhostGunner.net and GhostGuns.com to disable the websites for violating the hosting companies’ terms of service. People in England and Wales have two weeks to hand in guns, other weapons and ammunition to police stations without being punished for possession. Senate Democrats pushed nine different gun controls during the past six weeks, and ABC News has now emerged with a tenth gun law which they suggest may be the ringer. That law would legalize firearm confiscation orders like those in Washington state. Such orders allow a judge to issue an ex parte order for the confiscation of an American’s firearms. Within hours of the slaughter of 26 people at the church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, Democrats were calling for expanded background checks to cover the private transfers of guns.
