MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT SAN DIEGO (March 10, 2006) -- Giving up the fame of the football field at 29 years old, one Company B recruit looked for a glory that was more permanent than any trophy. At age 13, Pfc. Jeremy Staat was 75 inches tall and weighed 230 pounds. It seemed as if he was built for football, according to Staat. “I really didn’t have to work hard at it,” said Staat. Starting as an offensive lineman, Staat grew as a football player and saw his first glimpse of the Marine Corps not long after starting at Arizona...

IRAQ(Army News Service, Jan. 24, 2006) -- For many Soldiers, even the new Advanced Combat Helmet is a necessary evil; it can be cumbersome when in the dining facility trying to handle a tray of food and it causes headaches and tension in the neck when worn on lengthy missions. Sgt. Shawn Snyder of 3rd Infantry Division’s 2/7 Scout Platoon is one Soldier who will never complain about wearing his helmet again. With good reason … it saved his life. Snyder’s mission was to serve as a routine escort of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal detail to the forensics building in...

Abstract Among a fringe community of paranoids, aluminum helmets serve as the protective measure of choice against invasive radio signals. We investigate the efficacy of three aluminum helmet designs on a sample group of four individuals. Using a $250,000 network analyser, we find that although on average all helmets attenuate invasive radio frequencies in either directions (either emanating from an outside source, or emanating from the cranium of the subject), certain frequencies are in fact greatly amplified. These amplified frequencies coincide with radio bands reserved for government use according to the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). Statistical evidence suggests the use...

Robby Gordon is auctioning off the helmet he threw at Michael Waltrip, with all proceeds going to a relief fund for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Gordon started a one-week auction for the helmet Tuesday on eBay. The winning bid will go to the Harrah’s Employee Relief Fund. “People started asking me almost immediately after the race if they could have my helmet, and rather than just giving it away, we’ll use it to raise more money,” Gordon said. “Obviously I’m still angry about getting wrecked intentionally, but at the end of the day I still have a house to go...

I am an Army public affairs officer stationed in Iraq. We have unfortunately done several memorial stories that we send back to hometown newspapers. In each one we mention the memorial display of the boots, upturned rifle and helmet. I heard a beautiful explanation of the history and significance of that display at a VFW Memorial Day ceremony last year, but cannot locate the words anywhere.

As I was perusing John Kerry's campaign website a while back, I noticed that there were a number of pictures and videos of him riding a motorcycle without a helmet on. This struck me as odd since Senator Kerry is from Massachusetts and there is a helmet law in the Bay State. To get to the bottom of this issue, I contacted Kerry campaign headquarters. When asked about Kerry not wearing a motorcycle helmet, Dag Vega, a Kerry Spokesman, pointed out that Senator Kerry did wear a helmet when he was on the Tonight Show and that, "he only doesn't...

Heads Up Helmet A new helmet-mounted display system might help U.S. combat pilots master the tricky job of monitoring their plane's vast number of gauges while keeping their heads up and looking out for flying threats. (Senior Airman Greg L. Davis/U.S. Air Force) April 18 — Helping Fighter Jocks Keep Their Heads Up Today's combat planes have scores of microchips, radar systems, and wireless information networks to keep pilots informed about what's going on with their jets and the threats around them. But trying to manage all of that information — while flying and fighting against enemies at hundreds of...
