You might already know we have a pretty weird system for electing presidents. Candidates can win with fewer votes, some states matter more than others, some votes matter more than others, and all due to an ad hoc political compromise between 18th century wigged gentlemen. Per their decision, we don’t vote for our leaders directly, but instead choose intermediaries, known as electors, who then (usually) vote for who we tell them to. Since each state is given two free electors regardless of how few people live there, voters from sparsely populated states like Wyoming are able to pack over three...

I have found that the site Replace smart quotes with regular straight quotes fixes the problem Free Republic recently has with quotes and dashes. For example, a New York Times article As Germany Welcomes Migrants, Sexual Attacks in Cologne Point to a New Reality that when originally pasted looks like this: COLOGNE, Germany — In early December, the Cologne police made their New Year’s Eve preparations. Drawing on the previous year’s experience, they identified their biggest worry as pickpocketing and fireworks among the crowds. So they increased their holiday deployment, to 142 from 88, concentrating on the banks of the...

It's time for a new HTML reference so you can make your posts look cool. Skip to the part about ading images to your post HTML means Hyper Text Markup Language. It's a set of simple commands used to format the text of your posts, add images, or links, or change the appearance. URL is Uniform Resource Locator. It's the name of the page or the picture that you see, the www.http:// stuff. You'll need to use the URL to make links and post pictures. Quotation Marks Quotes have to be used around the URLs for web pages and images...

I don't know if this has impacted anybody else, but in recent weeks, I've noticed that HTML special characters are not rendering properly in HTML posts. For example, the character “ is rendering as “, the character †is rendering as â€ÂÂ, and so on. A screenshot of a typical thread is here: Needless to say, that is really irritating. There is a workaround for this: replace these special characters with their corresponding HTML codes. The ones that FR is currently having problems with are as follows: ‘ "left single quote" ‘ ’ "right single quote" ’ “ "left double...

I just thought this was beautiful and thought it would do us good to remember what a good man Reagan was.

Ok, could someone list the command to embed a video in a post or reply? Some sites do this automatically. I need HTML help here. The basics cover posting links and pictures, which I'm familiar with. How does one post a video from say, YouTube on here?

I was the first writer to cover the Web for a popular audience, and it did prove popular. I mean, it must have had hundreds of thousands of users in 1993! Today, Facebook alone has over a billion users. What's Hot on ZDNet Apple releases OS X Yosemite for Mac for free; iWork updated iOS 8.1 available October 20 for iPhones, iPads Apple Pay ready for lift-off and Google 'trying to get it right' Microsoft to 'Connect' with developers at November event in New York You see the problem was that it was really, really hard to use the Web...

With the news about the Mozilla Foundation and the desire of many FReepers to drop the Firefox browser, there are some viable (IMHO) alternatives, both of which are character-based:Links is text WWW browser with tables and frames. It runs on Linux, Unix, OS/2 and Windows. Lynx is a text browser for the World Wide Web. Lynx 2.8.7 runs on Un*x, MacOS, VMS, Windows 95/98/NT, DOS386+ (but not 3.1, 3.11), as well as OS/2 EMX.

On Friday, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) published the first public draft of Encrypted Media Extensions (EME). EME enables content providers to integrate digital rights management (DRM) interfaces into HTML5-based media players. Encrypted Media Extensions is being developed jointly by Google, Microsoft and online streaming-service Netflix. No actual encryption algorithm is part of the draft; that element is designed to be contained in a CDM (Content Decryption Module) that works with EME to decode the content. CDMs may be plugins or built into browsers. The publication of the new draft is a blow for critics of the extensions, led...

I have a tech question: how does one make a jpeg picture link viewable as a picture on free republic? For example, if I want to show this jpeg photo of President Reagan and Mrs. Thatcher: http://www.donnamoderna.com/var/ezflow_site/storage/images/media/images/moda/accessori/thatcher/ronald-reagan-e-margaret-thatcher/67684353-1-ita-IT/Ronald-Reagan-e-Margaret-Thatcher.jpg How can I show the photo itself and not just the link? Many thanks in advance to whoever can show me how to do this.

Trying to use Dylan Wagstaff's Rotator at us.homelinux.net. I can't get my main image centered. It's been years since I've done webpages, so I am a complete newbie at CSS. Any help is appreciated. I tried to do what he suggested in his page, but to no avail. Sure it is my lack of knowledge, but can someone tell me what I need to modify and how I need to modify it? Been playing around with it for hours and can't figure it out.
