My Fellow FReepers, As it now past midnight (well at least for those of us in Central Standard Time) and I did a general search and couldn't find a single thread dedicated to election 2005, I have taken the liberty of creating one. THIS is the place to post all your updates and discussions on '05 races around the country. From the Boston Mayoral Race to the fight for Virginia Attorney General, keep the adrenaline flowing here. Will the GOP make a midterm gubernatorial comeback after suffering through the 2001 "mistakes" of McGreeley and Mark Warner? Will Ahnuld, the...

OK Virginia-based Freepers...and anyone one else who's reading this post... Who is gonna win the Virginia Governors race tomorrow? I've visited a number of blogs, read the comments and looked at the polls. This race looks too close to call. My feeling is that Kilgore needs to do very well in the Valley, Southside, the Piedmont area (Orange, Culpeper, Warrenton) in order to off-set Kaine's advantages in Northern Va and the city of Richmond. Opinions or comments - anyone?

WITH ELECTION DAY less than 48 hours away, the campaign staff of GOP gubernatorial hopeful Wyatt Durrette huddled to weigh time, distance and The Gipper. Here they were, stuck in a downpour in the coal-mining outpost of Clintwood, while far to the northeast a popular president had offered to breathe a wisp of resuscitation into their stalled campaign. No need to debate. They would drive through the night in order to make a morning photo opportunity with President Ronald Reagan in the Oval Office. As veteran Virginian-Pilot political writer Warren Fiske recalled the 1985 scene, a break opened at the...

Interviews in the Virginia governor's race conducted by SurveyUSA tonight Monday 11/7 (but before President Bush appeared in Richmond) show a swing back towards Republican candidate Jerry Kilgore, causing SurveyUSA to now update its final projection in the Virginia Governor's Contest. This morning, based on interviews conducted Friday, Saturday and Sunday (11/4/05 through 11/6/05), SurveyUSA released data that showed Democrat Tim Kaine 9 points ahead of Kilgore. However, because of intra-day volatility in that data, SurveyUSA continued to poll throughout the afternoon and evening today Monday 11/7. When interviews from the most recent 3 days -- Saturday, Sunday and today...

My Virginia predictions By: Chad Dotson Section: Election 2005 Since I know you are all anxious for my predictions on this year's statewide races in Virginia, now is the time to go on the record, I suppose. Before I begin, however, let me mention that you have until midnight to enter the Election Day Prediction Contest. Prize to the winner! Now, to my predictions: Let's begin with the race for Governor, since that seems to be the only race that anyone is mildly interested in, and I stress the word "mildly." I don't expect that we'll see very high turnout...

A pair of big-spending, notably nasty races for governor in Virginia and New Jersey entered their final hours Monday, as candidates made last-minute blitzes and brought in political heavy-hitters to help campaign. In New Jersey, Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine and Republican Doug Forrester spent the day stumping for votes in coffee shops, train stations and senior citizen centers after a week dominated by allegations of infidelity and corruption. A Quinnipiac Poll released Monday gave Corzine a slight edge, 53 percent to 45 percent. The Star-Ledger/Eagleton-Rutgers Poll put the two closer, with Corzine leading 43 percent to 37 percent. Forrester,...

Lt. Governor Tim Kaine and Governor Mark Warner start thier cross state campaign tour in Roanoke this morning, working to get last minute votes for Tuesday's election. Our own 10 On Your Side/Survey USA poll, as well as others across the state, show Kaine has a slight lead within the margin of error over Republican candidate, and former Virginia Attorney General, Jerry Kilgore. "We really feel a sense of momentum about the race right now," Kaine said thsis morning. When we asked him about possible disappointment in counting on that momentum, Kaine responded, "It doesn't happen on automatic. It's all...

In Virginia, At the Wire, Momentum Raises Kaine: 12 hours until polls open in Virginia, Democrat Tim Kaine defeats Republican Jerry Kilgore, according to a SurveyUSA poll of 656 likely Virginia voters, conducted for WSLS-TV in Roanoke and WUSA-TV in Washington DC. This tracking graph tells the story. In June, the Republican Kilgore led by 10. In August, Kilgore led by 5. In September, Kilgore led by 3. In October, the Democrat Kaine led by 2. Today, Election Eve, Kaine leads by 9. Interviews for this survey were conducted before a last-second appearance by President Bush scheduled for this evening,...

Why did Michael Schiavo, a Floridian with Pennsylvania roots, endorse Democrat Tim Kaine's run for Virginia governor? Your guess is as good as Kaine's, whose campaign first learned the news on Wednesday after Schiavo's PR firm gave the mini-scoop to the Washington Post. The maneuver was meant to motivate base Democrats in Virginia six days before the Nov. 8 vote. Schiavo's statement said lots of mean things about Jeb Bush and Florida, and only a few nice things about Kaine and Virginia. This makes us wonder: Is Schiavo focused on Virginia's well being, or his own political future? Doesn't Florida...

I'm sending you this message to remind you to VOTE on Tuesday for Jerry Kilgore and the Republican ticket. The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. To look up your polling location, please visit the Virginia State Board of Elections' website. I'm also asking you to spread the word about Jerry Kilgore and Tuesday's important gubernatorial election. Virginia faces a clear choice on Tuesday. President Bush's detour to Virginia on his way home from Latin America on Monday shows that, despite all his troubles, he can still be considered an asset in a close political race. Bush will try to push Republican gubernatorial candidate Jerry Kilgore over the edge in the deadlocked campaign's final hours on Monday night. The president and other state Republicans will appear with Kilgore, who served as Bush's Virginia re-election campaign chairman, in a rally at the Richmond airport. Wrapping up a five-day trip to Latin America, Bush is scheduled to make the stop on his flight home from Panama.

Jerry Kilgore will get some big name support on Monday. President Bush is expected to be in town campaigning for Kilgore in their first public campaign appearance together in Richmond. The White House confirms Bush will appear briefly with Kilgore at Richmond International Airport Monday evening. Kilgore told The Associated Press in Charlottesville Friday that the president made the offer to come to Virginia. Kilgore added he thinks “Virginia has benefited from his presidency.” With Election Day on Tuesday, the two leading candidates for governor are criss-crossing the state as a new poll out Friday shows Republican Jerry Kilgore...

In the race for governor, the Times-Dispatch today endorses Jerry Kilgore. Contrary to the too-usual sentiment on the part of voters contemplating an election, this is not a lesser-of-two-evils decision but a positive endorsement of Kilgore. Why? Two principal reasons. Issues Because Kilgore's views are in the mainstream of Virginia's voters, he holds the advantage on key issues. For instance:< SNIP > Finally, Kilgore is right on these issues: (1) As a law-and-order guy, former prosecutor, and former Virginia public safety secretary (under Governor George Allen), he is tough on crime. (2) He supports genuine merit pay for teachers. (3) He...

Michael Schiavo is making political endorsements? Does he have some kind of Napoleon complex or narcissistic disorder or is it political retribution to Republicans for their support of his wife's right-to-life and a fair chance in the court system? Other than Jodi Centonze, and even her opinion is questionable, who cares who Michael Schiavo endorses for anything? Why does this individual who campaigned long and hard to kill his wife by judicial decree think that Virginia voters will care who he thinks is the best candidate for Governor and will vote according to his endorsement? What ties does Michael Schiavo...
