On Tuesday, the court agreed to hear Gutierrez's case and another that raise questions potentially crucial for other children of illegal immigrants. If Gutierrez wins, some immigrants may find it easier to avoid removal and stay in the United States.

The recent victim of an attempted armed robbery says she is taking measures to protect her family against crime by becoming more aware of her surroundings but some in Topeka are taking safety precautions a step further. Teresa, a resident of Topeka, avoided an attempted robbery Tuesday morning after she returned home to her driveway where a man armed with a gun approached her. Teresa says she began screaming and was able to get inside her home and lock the door then immediately called police. This has become an all too familiar scene over the last several months in Topeka,...

Augusta, Kan. — Readers may remember I recently wrote a column defending the image of the National Rifle Association of America in which I reviewed the origin, purpose, and contributions to the country by that organization. I am extremely concerned by the concerted effort of the past 30 years or so to denigrate, marginalize, and even criminalize many of the traditions, organizations, and activities that make us uniquely American. While researching a different subject in the Kansas State Adjutant General’s archives, I was impressed by what an integral part the National Rifle Association plays in the national defense, though it...

On a bright Saturday morning, Emily Nelson Guzman packed a beet-red Prius for the journey that would take her once more to Lumpkin, Ga., with its forlorn town square and sleepy barbecue joint and the nation's largest immigration detention center. Her husband was there, locked away. Nineteen months earlier, federal agents had arrested him in his yard. She loaded into the Prius a bag holding the old tight jeans she could finally squeeze into again, the ones she would model so he could see, through the visitation window, how much weight she had lost. She loaded another bag, full of...

We'll always be able to trust the government with a monopoly on force. Cooperate when threatened, and you won't be hurt. The assumptions behind gun control laws are so blatantly and dangerously wrong that it must take some intellect to trick oneself into believing they're true. In December 2000, five friends in their twenties decided to cooperate when Jonathan and Reginald Carr barged into their Wichita home, demanding money. The victims offered no resistance, hoping that the pair would take their valuables and leave. Instead, the attackers ordered the three men into a closet and proceeded to rape the two...

March 11, 2011 Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt issued an opinion that concealed carry permit holders can legally open carry a firearm with state preemption of local city ordinances and county resolutions. In addition to preemption, cities and counties cannot make open carry laws that require firearms to be unloaded while carrying and those municipalities may only regulate unlicensed open carry not licensed permit holders on property open to the public. A grass roots organization, Open Carry Kansas, requested the opinion through Kansas Legislator, Representative Lana Gordon, District 52 of Topeka. Open Carry Kansas appreciates the support of the Kansas...

Dear xxxx, Tell Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt and Sedgwick County District Attorney Nola Foulston that this country can not allow threats and intimidation to prevent doctors from providing abortion. Urge them to take action now to stop anti-abortion terrorist tactics in Wichita – before another abortion doctor is murdered. SIGN THE PETITION "Are doctors who are willing to provide [abortions] still just on their own, with their face on WANTED posters … waiting to see what happens next?" Rachel Maddow posed that question this week as she reported on the latest threats, harassment and terror campaign against Dr. Mila...

In the state of Kansas, to carry a concealed firearm you need a gun — preferably something that fits nice under your jacket, in your pocket or perhaps in your purse. You also need a license, the state’s seal of approval that you can hide a firearm on your person. What’s less clear is whether you need eyesight. It certainly is suggested, unquestionably helpful. But following a change in state law, it is no longer clear whether it is required. Kansas legislators during the last session approved a number of changes to the state’s concealed carry law. One of them...

Kansas college students, one man is fighting for your right to bear arms on campus. Republican state Rep. Forrest Knox told the Star that he's going to push a bill that would allow students to carry concealed firearms in buildings without security measures like metal detectors or guards. "My plan is to move that forward," Knox told the Star. "We will revise it somewhat and try to deal with situations, realistic situations, in public buildings. ... If you deny my right to provide for my own security, then you need to provide for my security." I imagine Knox was firing...
