NEW YORK — A 25-year-old university worker from Georgia shot and killed himself at ground zero (search) Saturday morning, authorities said. The man, Andrew Veal (search), of Athens, Ga., was found atop the structure housing the 1 and 9 subway lines after a hotel worker spotted what he believed was somebody sleeping inside the site around 8 a.m., said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A shotgun was found near the body, Coleman said. No suicide note was found, he said. Veal apparently was distraught over President Bush's (search) re-election, Newsday reported Saturday on its Web site edition, citing an unnamed police source. The newspaper also said the man was a registered Democrat who opposed the war in Iraq. Coleman said he could not confirm Newsday's account. Police were investigating how Veal entered the former World Trade Center (search) site, which is protected by high fences and owned by the Port Authority. Veal worked in a computer lab at the University of Georgia and was planning to marry, friends said Saturday.

American voters showed that they are "completely out of step with most of the free world," Carolyn Parrish said. The re-election of a war-mongering president shows Americans are "out of step" with the rest of the world, says a Liberal MP infamous for her blistering attacks on George W. Bush. Carolyn Parrish said Wednesday that she's "dumbfounded" by Bush's victory. "He has been reconfirmed as their commander-in-chief, and he is a war-like man." American voters showed that they are "completely out of step with most of the free world," Parrish said. "I guess it's a reflection of the profound psychological...

I recently offered an opinion post about selected "opinion shapers" beginning to prance about FR and attempting to sow seeds of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt (known in IBM circles as FUD!). To wit, a recent post by some schlamiel that offered that he was a "GOP insider" and that Corsi was a fraud and FR should distance themselves from them.Looks like the story of the "brown book" is true. I wonder if it occurs to anyof these rocket scientists that their efforts to discredit the Swifties is about to explode in their faces. In reality, if the Swifties story were...

Here's a TV pilot I'm pitching to Hollywood big shots. It's a blatant rip-off of Art Linkletter's "Kids Say the Darndest Things," but will have more of an edge than viewers got from the avuncular Linkletter. The working title is "Investors Do the Darndest Things." The premise is our morbid curiosity when it comes to the stupid things people do with their money. Mine was triggered recently by a reader who was hoping I'd be part of a CNBC Squawk Box-style exchange on shares of LTV, the extinct Cleveland steelmaker. His question: whether months after most of the defunct steelmaker's...

Occupied Jerusalem - The Israeli apartheid regime has arrested a former US Marine and initiator of the Human Shield Action to Iraq named Ken O'Keefe, accusing him "of endangering Israeli security." O'keefe reportedly was arrested Thursday while attempting to enter the Gaza Strip. O'keefe said he was going to discuss with the people and leaders of Gaza a plan to bring 10,000 western citizens who would act as international observers in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. O'Keefe was detained with another peace activist, named Ian Hodgson, as they walked along the beach into Palestinian towns from an area...

Armed robbers who held up terrified diners at gunpoint in a London restaurant are today being hunted by police. In a raid reminiscent of a scene from the film Pulp Fiction, the thieves held a gun to a customer's head as they forced diners to hand over money, mobile phones and other belongings. The robbers, who also used the gun to threaten one of the waiters, made their victims put all their possessions on the dining tables - reducing women to tears as they forced them to hand over their wedding rings. A senior flying squad officer described the robbery...

MINA, Saudi Arabia (AP) - At least 244 people were trampled to death and hundreds more hurt Sunday under the crush of worshippers in one of the deadliest disasters during the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. The stampede occurred during the stoning of the devil, an emotional and notoriously perilous hajj ritual. Pilgrims frantically throw rocks, shout insults or hurl their shoes at three stone pillars - acts that are supposed to demonstrate their deep disdain for Satan. Safety measures were in place at the site - one where fatal stampedes have been frequent - but "caution isn't stronger...

A total of 244 Muslim pilgrims were trampled to death or suffocated as people panicked during a ritual stoning of pillars representing the devil, a Saudi minister said. Minister of Pilgrimage Affairs and Religious Trusts Iyad bin Amin Madani said the crush started around 9:00 am as large numbers of white-robed pilgrims surged toward the Jamarat Bridge in this valley near Mecca to throw stones at the pillars. He said about another 240 people were injured in the crush which lasted for 27 minutes. "We believe that most of the dead are from among illegal pilgrims," Madani said, referring to...
  • Scientists Find Lemmings Die as Dinners, Not Suicides

For centuries, people have puzzled over lemmings, the northern rodents whose populations surge and crash so quickly and so regularly that they inspired an enduring myth: that lemmings commit mass suicide when their numbers grow too large, eagerly pitching themselves off cliffs to their death in a foamy sea. Scientists debunked that notion decades ago. But they have never been certain what causes the rapid boom-and-bust cycles that gave rise to it. Now, in a study of collared lemmings in Greenland, being published today in the journal Science, a team of European researchers report that the reason has nothing to...

For those who have paid attention, it is obvious that Juanita Broaddrick is a compelling witness. She lived a nightmare that she always wanted to be private but that became public. Juanita never wanted to testify. That is why she made the initial mistake of signing an affidavit that came from Bruce Lindsey, who was quite a behind the scenes fixer and apparently also an affidavit mill. Talk about a lowlife with no conscience. When she had to testify under oath, Juanita told the truth as she lived it. She came forward reluctantly. She had government contracts that could be...

We were there to watch Emma Thompson on a lorry. Actually, of the day I marched against cruise and Pershing missiles what I remember best is the bemused look on the faces of a group of NUM men as Emma performed her mobile political cabaret.
Undoubtedly you have heard about lemmings. They are those furry little rodents who live in the upper reaches of the arctic and have been known to swarm in large numbers and suddenly rush off of cliffs and fall to their death. The truth is that they don't commit mass suicide by running off cliffs in large numbers. They do migrate in large numbers from one feeding area to another and they seem to do so in a very chaotic manner. No one is really sure what triggers this behavior but it does seem to occur every 3-5 years.

  • Anti-war protest rally held in Palo Alto style

About 5,000 anti-war protesters from cities along the Peninsula crowded onto Palo Alto's City Hall Plaza on Saturday afternoon, making the rally against invading Iraq one of the Peninsula's largest demonstrations ever.

But despite its formidable size, the rally was rather whimsical. People carried balloon animals twisted into circular peace signs. Children scribbled peace slogans on the pavement with chalk. And a choir of two dozen elderly women wearing sunbonnets crowned with brightly colored crepe-paper flowers belted out ``Make Peace Instead of War'' to the tune of ``When the Saints Come Marching In,'' accompanied by an accordion and a frying pan used as a tambourine.

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) — At a time when a shaky economy and stock market continue to defy predictions, many economists are turning to psychologist Daniel Kahneman for answers. The Princeton professor is known for research showing how quirks in human behavior, such as a tendency to be overconfident or avoid risk, lead to investor decision-making that doesn't always bring the best, or most logical, outcomes. That's no surprise to many investors who plunged into tech stocks in the late 1990s, only to be burned over the last three years. Kahneman's theories...
