What started as a would-be arrest at a Kansas motel ended with four federal agents shot and the motel engulfed in flames. Officers from the U.S. Marshals Service's Fugitive Task Forces were looking for a suspect Saturday night at the Country Club Motel, Topeka police Lt. Colleen Stuart said. But when they reached the motel, someone opened fire and struck two U.S. marshals, an FBI agent and a fourth federal agent, Stuart said. It was not immediately clear which agency the fourth agent belonged to. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening, Stuart said.

An officer-involved shooting that left a longtime Adams County rancher dead Sunday has shocked the community and brought a tidal wave of recriminations for the county's small sheriff's department. The Adams County Sheriff's Office has been bombarded with angry calls and hate mail from people upset by the shooting, which left 62-year-old Jack Yantis dead on U.S. 95 in front of his home north of Council. Adams County Sheriff Ryan Zollman said people in the office are being called "murderers" and said the calls coming in forced one emergency dispatcher to leave her post Tuesday. "She was so upset," he...

Are three cop killers on the loose in Lake County? Nearly a month has passed since the gunshot death of a northern Illinois police lieutenant shocked Americans coast to coast. Vivid accounts of the massive manhunt for three ostensible killers drove news accounts for days. The funeral of Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz — "G.I. Joe" to many friends — attracted fellow officers from across the U.S. The wails of bagpipes, a trumpeting of taps and seven helicopters flying in a "V" formation bid him a final tribute. Unresolved then, as now, was the explanation of what led to the lieutenant's...

Since the formation of the Black Lives Matter Movement memorials honoring officers killed in the line of duty have been attacked in Philadelphia, Chicago, Fresno, Denver, New Orleans, Oakland, Austin, Rochester NY, Covington KY, Fayetteville AR and Raleigh NC. Vandalism has...

Suggestions that police are biased and not doing their jobs properly -- made by some of the nation's top leaders -- create a dangerous climate for the men and women who serve and protect, says former U.S. Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.). "Why do we believe police need retraining or reorganization and reforming?" West asked. "The most important thing to understand is leaders establish climate, an atmosphere," West told Fox News's Greta Van Susteren Monday night. "And when you have people, such as the president, such as the attorney general, Eric Holder, and (New York) Mayor Bill de Blasio, and look...

In our society there are laws we agree to live within. It is a societal compact, designed to prevent our exercise of freedom from interfering with the freedom of others. To that end, we have given over authority to enforce our laws to a specially trained, armed section of our society called “Law Enforcement.” As all of our citizens have the same rights, when one citizen makes a complaint about the actions of another, or when reports of citizens breaking the law are brought to their attention, LEO’s are obligated by oath and honor to protect society by investigating and...

A terrifying helmet cam video, released to the public Wednesday, depicts a SWAT team executing a search warrant on the home of a 68-year-old woman and her 18-year-old adopted daughter. The video is raising questions of privacy, reasonable force and police due diligence. They had the wrong place. The raid of Louise Milan and daughter Stephanie Milan’s Evansville, Ind. home was accompanied by the sound of shattering glass and multiple flash-bang grenades. It was all due to the Milan’s non-password protected Internet router, according to the Evansville Courier & Press. The raid was prompted by a series of threatening posts...

To people on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, and many around the world who watched Wednesday night's violence unfold, it seemed like a scene out of another country. (snip) Some in the military community say the problem is that police are getting the equipment without the same training and rules. "To call this militarization doesn't characterize the military very well," said Josh Weinberg, an Army veteran who focuses on security issues for the Truman Project. "We always were trained in escalation of force." To call this militarization doesn't characterize the military very well. The police apparently "had their weapons up...

Inside the municipal garage of this small lakefront city, parked next to the hefty orange snowplow, sits an even larger truck, this one painted in desert khaki. Weighing 30 tons and built to withstand land mines, the armored combat vehicle is one of hundreds showing up across the country, in police departments big and small. The 9-foot-tall armored truck was intended for an overseas battlefield. But as President Obama ushers in the end of what he called America’s “long season of war,” the former tools of combat — M-16 rifles, grenade launchers, silencers and more — are ending up in...

On Mother’s Day Tommy Yancy, father of two, was pulled over for not having a front license plate. What transpired beyond that point is not totally clear, but his injuries resulted in his death. Yancy, 32, was a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan. There has been almost zero media coverage of the incident. A local publication, Imperial Valley Press, offers only a sidenote about his family raising money for his memorial and this: The 32-year-old Yancy died following an altercation with law enforcement during a traffic stop May 11 in Imperial. Cops bloodied an 84-year-old man and put him in the hospital Sunday when he jaywalked at an Upper West Side intersection and didn’t appear to understand their orders to stop, witnesses said. Kang Wong was strolling north on Broadway and crossing 96th Street at around 5 p.m., when an officer told him to halt because he had walked against the light. Police were targeting jaywalkers in the area following the third pedestrian fatality this month around West 96th Street. Wong, who lives a block away, appeared to not understand the cop, the witnesses said.
