The White House said Thursday that protesters angered by the fatal police shooting of a black man in Charlotte, North Carolina, are raising “legitimate” concerns about racial disparities in the criminal-justice system. “Those are difficult questions that must be confronted,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest. “They cannot be ignored.” After a second night of rioting and confrontations with police in Charlotte, President Obama spoke by phone Thursday with North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory to receive an update on the situation. Mr. Earnest said the president wants authorities to ensure the safety of protesters.

The intent of the campaign — evident in comments by politicians like Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina, Gov. On his way to Alaska this afternoon, President Obama called Kathleen Goforth, the widow of the slain Texas Deputy Sheriff Darren Goforth who was shot and killed at a gas station while he was fueling a police cruiser. “On behalf of the American people, I offered Mrs. Goforth my condolences and told her that Michelle and I would keep her and her family in our prayers,” Obama said in a statement released this evening. Obama said that he promised Goforth’s widow that he would continue to praise bravery of police officers who served their communities.

Tiny Confederate flags are right under the noses of millions of straphangers passing through the Times Square subway station every day. The tile mosaics honor the late New York Times head Adolph S. Ochs, a Southerner with “strong ties to the Confederacy,” said Civil War historian Dr. David Jackowe. The tiles were installed more than 90 years ago when stations were adorned with symbols to honor prominent figures — in this case, the Tennessee-raised Ochs, who was buried with a Confederate flag after his death in 1935.
