Michigan – the battleground state with one of the closest margins in the country – appears headed toward a 2016 presidential election recount, although the deadline for requesting one is not until November 30. ...snip... The Detroit Free Press said the recount “will be a monumental task for the Secretary of State and 83 county clerks around Michigan” and that the state will hand count each ballot if a recount is requested. Michigan’s recount rules say that a candidate “who believes that the canvass of the votes cast on the office may be incorrect because of possible ‘fraud or mistake’...

During Donald Trump’s visit to Flint, Michigan on Wednesday, the Republican nominee commented on how the automobile manufacturing industry has moved to Mexico — impacting trade — and how people in Flint can’t drink the water, much like the water in Mexico. “It used to be cars were made in Flint, and you couldn’t drink the water in Mexico,” Trump stated. “Now, the cars are made in Mexico and you can’t drink the water in Flint.” “That’s not good,” he added, as people chuckled in response.

In March of 2016, members of Michigan Open Carry (MOC) and Michigan Gun Owners (MGO) were manning a booth that they had rented in the DeVos Place Convention Center. They were openly carrying holstered pistols, which has never been against the law in Michigan, except for a small number of restricted areas. While people with concealed carry permits may not carry a concealed firearm into a school, they may openly carry a holstered pistol there. They can openly carry holstered pistols into the State Capitol. Late in the day on 11 March, the members of MGO and MOC were...

California and New York — where almost 1 in 5 Americans live — are on their way to raising their minimum wage to $15 an hour, and the activists who spearheaded those efforts are now setting their sights on other similarly liberal, Democratic-led states. Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington are among the states with active “Fight for $15” efforts, and even economic experts who oppose the increased rate see it gaining momentum. “There is lots of pressure to do this,” said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former Congressional Budget Office director who is now president of...

Tonight was the night when I could clearly see Ted Cruz as President of the United States. He made the right moral judgment — dealing with Donald Trump was far more important than jockeying for position with Marco Rubio or John Kasich. He made the case against Trump in the right way — he was civil even as he eviscerated Trump again and again. And he connected with the audience not just with his command of the facts, but also by making his case in an effective, human way. When he asked the audience how many had been waiters or...

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson has suspended his presidential campaign after a dismal showing on Super Tuesday. Carson was one of the last five candidates remaining in the Republican presidential race. But he was unable to come in higher than fourth place in any of the 11 states to vote on March 1. In Massachusetts, he came in fifth, with just 2.6 percent of the vote. According to an Associated Press tally, Carson has earned just eight delegates so far. Frontrunner Donald Trump has 319, and 1,237 are needed to win the nomination. Carson's full statement is below: _______________________________________________ I have...

On 10 February, 2016, Didarul Sarder, who was legally armed, used his handgun to stop a vicious knife attack on a woman in the GM facility in Warren, Michigan. He likely saved her life. Most of the action was caught on video. GM has a "Gun Free" policy on their sites. The original speculation was that Sarder would be fired. There was enough of a public outcry for GM to make an exception to their policy. Mayer Jim Fouts led the fight to insure that Sarder did not lose his job. Fouts said that Sarder should be rewarded for...
