n LAPD officer was injured and several demonstrators were arrested at an anti-illegal immigration protest Saturday evening in Hollywood. LAPD spokesperson Sandra Escalante says the female officer apparently hurt her ankle while clashing with protesters. Escalante said "several" arrests were made. The rally, attended by various anti-illegal immigration groups, took place at Hollywood Boulevard and Argyle Avenue. The crowd was estimated at about 200.

One of the big fears permeating the whole debate between the Minutemen and the immigrant-rights people, of course, is that the undesirables in our midst will marry, maybe even have children. The worst, indeed, has now occurred.

Caltrans ordered a longtime Laguna Beach day labor center to close Friday, saying it was illegally operating on state property, land that the state didn't even know it owned. The state Department of Transportation issued the order after a Laguna Beach resident who is a member of the Minuteman Project border patrol group checked property records and brought the information forward as part of a protest against the center.

I will have more to say about this tomorrow, but I had a lengthy conversation this afternoon with Russ Knocke, a press secretary for the Department of Homeland Security.
