Long Beach Police officers had an "obstructed view" when they opened fire on a man who was allegedly running from a standoff Sunday, according to a press release issued Monday. "Long Beach officers, who were located on the beach, east of the foot of the stairs with an obstructed view due to palm trees and shrubbery, heard gunshots from above and saw the suspect running toward the populated beach area," the press release stated. Appearing on CNN, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer told Larry King that burning the Koran was protected speech. When asked if Pastor Jones of Florida had a right to burn the book, Breyer said, "Yeah, I said it depends on what analogy you use, but the most one analogous case is that there was — you have the right to burn an American flag as a symbol." Earlier, Breyer told George Stephanopoulos that burning the Koran may not be protected by the First Amendment and compared it to yelling 'fire' in a crowded theater.

I have long enjoyed Free Republic as a news source, and greatly enjoy the depth of the commentary. I woke up from my political coma, like many Americans, during the 2007 Presidential campaign. I have since been silently witnessing the pain and suffering of our beloved country and liberties. I sincerely want the tide of politics to shift, but fear it too late. Time will show. I hope I can contribute to the FReep discussions intelligently.

I know there is a lot of speculation on what will happen in the next few years, but I would really like to know if anyone has a real good sense of what will be going on in a few years. I would like to be prepared, but don't want to over prepare. Is there a real good sense of what is coming in the next few years? I have the ammunition I need, but is it really necessary to stockpile food. Just curious as to what other here are doing. Thanks
