In the wake of this month’s school shooting in Parkland, Fla., Detroit Police Chief James Craig said he is open to the idea of some teachers being armed with guns in classrooms. “Certainly, there should be a very thorough vetting process,” ... “When I talk about vetting, I mean someone who is trained, someone who is responsible, the rigors associated with someone in a school environment. It could be an ex-military, ex-police officer; some of those folks are teachers, as an example.” Craig likened the vetting process to that of airlines following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, in that...

In a move that particularly targets Indian tech workers and IT outsourcing companies, the Trump Administration on Friday announced stricter requirements for companies that rely on H-1B workers. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said in a new policy memo it will require “detailed documentation” about H-1B workers employed at third-party work sites to ensure employees are filling a specialty role for which they were hired.

CREW is funded by a long list of left-wing organizations and foundations. They include liberal foundations, labor unions, and interest groups looking for support from CREW. Liberal Mega-Donors CREW’s principal source of funding is ideologically liberal/left-wing foundations. In 2013 (the most recent year for which complete tax records are available), these groups paid CREW grants equal to 55% of its total reported contribution/grant revenue. Among the foundations that have made significant contributions to CREW in recent years: The Foundation to Promote Open Society (controlled by liberal billionaire financier George Soros and his family): $740,000 since 2010 The Open Society Institute...

The misnamed Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) poses as a nonpartisan government watchdog, but it’s really functioned as a left wing-funded attack dog against Republicans over the past decade. This year, CREW has dialed it up going after the Trump Administration. Earlier this year, CREW sued the President under the foreign emoluments clause of the Constitution, which prohibits the President from receiving gifts from foreign states. CREW argued that Trump’s business ties violated this because foreign entities have leased space in Trump Tower in New York. But federal judge George Daniels—a Bill Clinton appointee—wasn’t buying what CREW...

In days gone by, a massacre of students like the atrocity at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School would have brought us together. But like so many atrocities before it, this mass murder is tearing us apart. The perpetrator, the sick and evil 19-year-old who killed 17 innocents with a gun is said to be contrite. Having confessed, he faces life in prison. For the next half-century, Nikolas Cruz will be fed, clothed, sheltered and medicated at the expense of Florida taxpayers, including the families of those he murdered. Cruz's punishment seems neither commensurate with his crimes nor a deterrent for...

Bringing guns into schools ‘does nothing to protect’ our students, educators from gun violence Washington, DC - February 21, 2018 - In a listening session at the White House today, Donald Trump proposed to arm teachers and school staff in an attempt to prevent mass shootings. The following can be attributed to NEA President Lily Eskelsen García:“Bringing more guns into our schools does nothing to protect our students and educators from gun violence. Our students need more books, art and music programs, nurses and school counselors; they do not need more guns in their classrooms. Parents and educators overwhelmingly reject the...

I happened onto a piece by Bill Kristol in The Weekly Standard, wherein he links to "a short, powerful piece in National Review" by Rick Brookhiser, who "concludes that 'the conservative movement is no more. Its destroyers are Donald Trump and his admirers.'" I somewhat get the sentiment -- or at least I used to -- because during the GOP primaries, I fleetingly entertained a similar concern that Trump, whom I didn't consider a conservative, might undermine the conservative movement in the long run if elected. Presumably trying to console Brookhiser, Kristol writes: "Movements grow old. They eventually die....

When Coral Springs police officers arrived at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14 in the midst of the school shooting crisis, many officers were surprised to find not only that Broward County Sheriff's Deputy Scot Peterson, the armed school resource officer, had not entered the building, but that three other Broward County Sheriff's deputies were also outside the school and had not entered, Coral Springs sources tell CNN. The deputies had their pistols drawn and were behind their vehicles, the sources said, and not one of them had gone into the school.

A person close to accused Florida shooter said she wanted ‘clear conscience’ if he ‘just starts shooting’ A person close to the teenager accused of killing 17 people at a Florida high school warned the FBI she was concerned he would “get into a school and just shoot the place up,” according to a transcript of her call with a bureau tip line operator more than a month before the massacre. More recently, Mr. Cruz “switched it to he wants to kill people,” the unidentified woman told the operator in a somewhat rambling conversation. “Something is gonna happen,” she said....

Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny was briefly detained in Moscow on Thursday, ahead of the country's presidential election from which he has been banned. Navalny, the best-known political opponent of President Vladimir Putin, reported his detention in a series of tweets and said authorities had begun legal proceedings against him for organizing anti-government protests. It's not clear when he might face court, but he could be jailed for a maximum of 30 days and could possibly still be in prison for the March 18 election. His chief of staff, Leonid Volkov, tweeted that he, too, had been detained. The Kremlin...

President Donald Trump energized conservative activists at CPAC on Friday, celebrating his accomplishments during his first year in office. “Hey, we have got seven years to go, folks!” Trump told the audience who cheered wildly. The president arrived with a prepared speech but quickly abandoned the teleprompters in favor of a free-wheeling address. Trump’s arrival thrilled the crowd who waited hours to get in for Trump’s speech. CPAC president Matt Schlapp said it was the biggest audience in history. “I think now we’ve proved that I’m a conservative,” Trump said. The speech quickly turned into a dynamic rally-style speech as...

As a coconspirator in a massive drug case, Leigha Genduso testified in federal court in 2007 about how she helped her live-in boyfriend deal marijuana and hide evidence. She acknowledged laundering money, smoking pot every day, and gift-wrapping pounds of marijuana for her own customer, court records show, but evaded criminal charges in exchange for testifying against her former fiance. Just a year later, Genduso was on the other side of the law, hired as a dispatcher for the Massachusetts State Police. And since 2014, she has served as a state trooper.
