CONCORD -- New Hampshire residents will face expanded background checks and a seven-day waiting period for gun purchases if a pair of bills passed in the House of Representatives become law. The House voted Tuesday to expand background checks for private gun sales and transfers, as well as add a seven-day waiting period before a sale can be completed. The bill, which passed on a 203-148 vote, would close a loophole in the current New Hampshire law that allows for private firearm transactions to take place at gun shows without a background check.

Mayor Bill de Blasio’s ongoing tease of a presidential run didn’t exactly pull in the crowds during a campaign-esque event in the Granite State. Only 20 people showed up Sunday to hear the leader of America’s largest city hold a roundtable on mental health — including the 14 people on the panel and just six in the audience. There were also about six reporters on hand to make the room at the Sugar River Valley Regional Technical Center look a bit less empty.

MANCHESTER, N.H. — New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand officially entered the ever-growing pool of Democratic presidential hopefuls Sunday, ending the two-month-long exploratory phase of her campaign saying she’s running for the White House to make “big, bold, brave choices.” “Our anthem asks a question, forcing every generation to make a choice,” Gillibrand says in a video released Sunday morning. “Will brave win? Let’s answer for ours." **SNIP** After Sunday’s video announcement, Gillibrand heads to Michigan on Monday for an MSNBC town hall with Chris Hayes; to Iowa on Tuesday and Wednesday; and to Nevada on Thursday. She’ll then cap off...

A top-ranked runner in NCAA women’s track is dominating the competition and setting records one year after competing as a man at the same level. Franklin Pierce University senior CeCe Telfer leads the NCAA’s Division II women’s division in the 55-meter dash and 55-meter hurdle events. Telfer led Franklin Pierce’s women’s track team into the top 25 rankings for the first time in program’s history, local newspaper The Keene Sentinel reported in December. The New Hampshire college is ranked 14th in DII. “Senior CeCe Telfer (Lebanon, N.H.) won three Northeast-10 Conference titles on Sunday, to lead the Franklin Pierce University...

We should be finding out whether or not Joe Biden will be running for president any… day… now. Of course, I’m fairly sure I wrote that exact same line back before Christmas, so nobody but Crazy Uncle Joe knows for sure. Still, the clock is ticking and Biden has been making a lot of moves that suggest he’s not just doing this to attract attention. This week, however, we learned that the one thing that would have given Biden the perfect excuse to sail off into retirement is no longer on the table. His family is reportedly onboard with...

Full title: Where's Elizabeth Warren's 'reparations' to American Indians for stealing that affirmative action slot? So Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren is all in for American taxpayers paying reparations to American Indians, along with black people, for wrongs past. According to Fox News: 2020 presidential hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., expanded on an already-radical proposal on Friday, telling reporters that Native Americans should be “part of the conversation” on reparations for African-Americans -- a move that threatens to bring back her own history with Native Americans. Taking questions from reporters ahead of a Democratic Party fundraiser in Manchester, N.H., Warren,...

Mayor de Blasio took his presidential ambitions to Iowa on Saturday night, where he’s deploying a head-scratcher campaign strategy: trash talking Hillary Clinton and praising President Trump - and all the while still not declaring his candidacy. Only 25 Sioux City residents braved a blizzard to hear Hizzoner insist he’d do a better job than Clinton at leading Democrats. Clinton spent too much time trashing her Republican opponent in 2016, the mayor complained. “We’re not going to win by talking about Donald Trump,” the mayor said inside a cavernous bar.local bar as a blizzard raged outside. “I have deep respect...

The mayor will arrive in Iowa on Saturday afternoon and depart Sunday afternoon. He expects to have events in Des Moines and Sioux City, though final details are still being worked out, according to a person familiar with the arrangements. The travel comes just a week after de Blasio canceled a scheduled trip to another early presidential primary state, New Hampshire, following the tragic friendly-fire death of New York City police Detective Brian Simonsen. Electoral College advocates see a window of opportunity to eliminate America’s unique presidential election system. They are seizing the moment, working to implement change before anyone realizes what happened. They even think they can do it without a constitutional amendment. National Popular Vote (NPV) is a California-based effort that has been running under the radar. Its proponents ask state legislatures to agree to an interstate compact. By the terms of that simple contract, each participating state would agree to allocate its entire slate of electors to the winner of the national popular vote. This is a change from the current...

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) will visit New Hampshire this week and has reportedly begun seeking staff with national political campaign experience as he mulls a possible 2020 presidential bid. Politico reports that de Blasio will visit the state that holds the first 2020 primary and has been talking with staffers who worked for previous presidential campaigns about the future of the Democratic Party and its 2020 platform. “He wants to make sure ideas like pre-K for all, paid personal time and mental health are on the table as Democrats debate the party’s vision for the future,”...

LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) — Sen. Elizabeth Warren is expected to formally launch her presidential bid in this working-class city on Saturday with a populist call to fight economic inequality, a message she hopes will distinguish her in a crowded Democratic field and help her move past the controversy surrounding her past claims to Native American heritage. The Massachusetts Democrat will announce her 2020 plans at a mill site where largely immigrant factory workers went on strike nearly 100 years ago, providing the longtime consumer advocate a fitting forum to advance her political platform. In a video announcing Saturday's event, Warren...

It’s the battle of the billionaires! And now it’s Mike Bloomberg's turn! He used to be a Republican. But he became so rich, he had to join the Democrats. He's rich. He's white. He's male. Or, in CNN terms: He's Satan. Now he bloviates in the faces of other Dems – offering wisdom based on his decades of success, as well as being really boring and earnest. While speaking in New Hampshire, he reminds the Dems that the election takes place in America, not Berkeley. With their lame platitudes, the Democratic campaign resembles a high school beer party before mom...

Michael Bloomberg has claimed California Sen. Kamala Harris' plan to abolish private health insurance in favor of 'Medicare for all' would bankrupt the country. The former New York City mayor - who is considering running for the Democratic presidential nomination - rejected the idea endorsed by his 2020 rival, which is gaining traction in the party. 'I think you could never afford that. You’re talking about trillions of dollars,' Mr Bloomberg said during a political swing in New Hampshire, where the nation’s first primary will be held next year.

Julián Castro, the former housing secretary and former mayor of San Antonio, announced on Saturday that he would run for president, one of the most high-profile Latino Democrats ever to seek the party’s nomination. His first campaign stop will be in Puerto Rico, where he will speak on Monday at the Latino Victory Fund’s annual summit and meet with residents still struggling to recover from Hurricane Maria. Later in the week, his campaign said, he will go to New Hampshire. Mr. Castro, in prepared remarks that he was set to deliver in San Antonio on Saturday, said, “When my grandmother...

A New York school superintendent recently testified as a character witness for a neighbor who was convicted last year of fondling an 11-year-old boy. Sweet Home schools superintendent Anthony Day testified at the sentencing hearing for Luiz Pereira in December to help his friend and neighbor avoid jail and defend his character. A jury convicted Pereira, a 54-year-old college administrator, of felony unlawful contact with a minor ... Despite some backlash, school board members have stood firmly behind the superintendent. Six board members signed a statement to district parents and staff defending Day’s testimony ... Judge Anthony Vardaro ultimately sentenced...
