The doctor who is suspected of helping the CIA target Osama bin Laden will be charged with treason, Pakistan's information ministry said Thursday. "A case of conspiracy against the state of Pakistan and high treason is made" against Dr. Shakeel Afridi, the information ministry said, summarizing a commission's investigation into the death of the al Qaeda leader. Afridi is accused of helping the CIA use a vaccination campaign to try to collect DNA samples from people who lived in bin Laden's compound. The United States "has repeatedly asked" for the release of the Pakistani doctor, a U.S. official said Thursday....

Last week Adm. Mullen told the Senate Armed Services Committee the American Military had “credible intelligence” that the Pakistani Intelligence Services was the guiding hand behind the Sept 13 Tet Offensive like attack on Kabul and the truck bombing on a American base killing Afghanis and wounding 77 American soldiers. As previously reported on here, the Haqqani Network, a band of terrorists, are provided a sanctuary in Pakistan and in turn serve as proxy to assert Pakistan’s influence in Afghanistan. The Admiral’s assertions were the first time a senior official has acknowledged the link between the Haqqani Network and the...

Faisal Shahzad gave the impression of a quiet family man, raising two small children with his wife in Shelton, Conn. and telling neighbors he worked on Wall Street. Now the Pakistani-American is accused of trying to detonate a homemade car bomb in New York City's bustling Times Square. Authorities have brought terrorism and mass destruction charges against him, saying he has confessed to receiving explosives training in Pakistan. Shahzad was expected to appear in court Tuesday. CBS News reports that officials intend to arraign Shahzad Wednesday morning in Manhattan Federal Court before a U.S. magistrate. Shahzad has been talking to...

Why do we need a smoking SUV to tell us that a terrorist attack is under way? ... [T]he "no-fly list" is checked only daily by the airlines. When Shazad made his flight reservation by cell phone on the way to the airport, Emirates Air apparently was unaware that the "no-fly list" had been updated, and had no obligation to check it against the passenger list for that flight. How -- in an age when every animal that can walk upright and has opposable thumbs uses them to "tweet" on "Twitter" and blog on "Facebook" and whateverthehellelse from their cell...

Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday defended the Mirandizing of Faisal Shahzad, the suspect in the attempted Times Square car bombing, while senators had a mixture of praise and criticism for the timing of Shahzad’s arrest. Asked during an Appropriations hearing whether the reading of Miranda rights had impeded the investigation, Holder said, “No, it did not. As we have seen in prior investigations, the giving of Miranda warnings has not deterred people from talking to us, and Mr. Shahzad is, in fact, continuing to cooperate with us.”

Faisal Shahzad's Pakistani passport, tax documents, greeting cards, academic records and immigration documents were found abandoned outside a Shelton home once owned by the man charged in the attemped Times Square car bombing. The documents, mainly from 2000 and 2001, were found Tuesday by a Connecticut Post reporter outside the house at 119 Long Hill Ave. where the 30-year-old Shahzad lived until about a year ago. The house is vacant and up for sale. Police earlier had searched the property, according to neighbors.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — U.S. accusations that Pakistan is supporting Afghan insurgents have triggered a nationalist backlash and whipped up media fears of an American invasion, drowning out any discussion over the army's long use of jihadi groups as deadly proxies in the region. The reaction shows the problem facing the United States as it presses Pakistan for action: Strong statements in Washington provoke a negative public response that makes it more difficult for the army to act against the militants — even if it decided it was in the country's interest to do so.

ABBOTTABAD: It may have been a mere misplaced dot that led to accusations of blasphemy against a Christian eighth-grader, whose miniscule error led to her expulsion from school and uproar amongst local religious leaders. Faryal Bhatti, a student at the Sir Syed Girls High School in Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) colony Havelian, erroneously misspelt a word in an Urdu exam while answering a question on a poem written in praise of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). The word in question was ‘laanat’ instead of ‘naat’ – an easy error for a child to make, as the written versions of the words...

The insurgents who attacked the U.S. Embassy in Kabul last week were killed but their cell phones left a trail. The phones had been used to call Pakistani intelligence operatives before and during the assault. This evidence lies behind the charge made by Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, that the Haqqani network is a "veritable arm" of Pakistani intelligence, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports. The attack on the U.S. Embassy and NATO's Afghan headquarters resulted in a 22-hour firefight - with American troops pinned down on roof tops.

Pakistan’s intelligence agency helped terrorists plan and conduct an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, last week, Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Thursday. The comments marked the first time a senior U.S. official has publicly linked Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency to an attack on U.S. interests in Afghanistan. Testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Adm. Mullen said the ISI also helped the Haqqani Network, a Pakistan-based terrorist group, plan a truck-bomb attack near a NATO military base on Sept. 10. Four Afghans were killed and 77 U.S. troops injured in...

Possibly, or at least part of its government may be. The United States government believes it has evidence linking the Haqqani network, a terrorist organization which has repeatedly carried out attacks against US government personnel and positions, with the government of Pakistan. As ABC News (Australia) reports: "The United States says there is evidence linking the Pakistani government to the militant group that carried out last week’s attack on the US embassy in Kabul. The US ambassador to Pakistan, Cameron Munter, claims there are links between the Pakistani government and high-profile terrorist group the Haqqani network. In blunt comments broadcast...

Chinese military allowed to take photographs, samples of aircraft's 'skin', despite CIA objections, Financial Times reports ISLAMABAD — Pakistan gave China access to the previously unknown "stealth" helicopter that crashed during the commando raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May despite explicit requests from the CIA not to, the Financial Times reported on Sunday. The revelation, if confirmed, is likely to further shake the U.S.-Pakistan relationship, which has been improving slightly after hitting its lowest point in decades following the May 2 bin Laden raid.
