E-mails containing malicious PDF files have been putting computers at risk since Friday, Finnish security software firm F-Secure said on Saturday. "The e-mails sent in bulk looked like credit card statements, and contained an attachment called 'report.pdf'," its Chief Research Officer Mikko Hypponen said in a statement. When such PDF files are viewed on vulnerable machines, they start downloading software from servers in Malaysia or Sweden, which are now being cleaned, he said. "There will be more such attacks." "We are worried about this case, as PDF attachments are typically not filtered at e-mail gateways." A security update for Adobe...

A day after Adobe patched a serious security hole in its Reader and Acrobat programs, miscreants are flooding email inboxes with malware-tainted PDF files that try to remotely hijack vulnerable computers. The malware, identified by Symantec researchers as Trojan.Pidief.A, is included in PDF files attached to a "fair number of emails," according to this blog entry. The spam typically targets specific businesses or organizations. Adobe issued a patch for the vulnerability on Monday. The revelation of in-the-wild exploits underscores the importance of updating immediately. A patch for Reader is available here; an Acrobat update is available here. Emails typically arrive...
  • Imagine a World Without Adobe

Imagine a world without Photoshop or PDF. Heck, without digital fonts and desktop publishing and the ability to print graphics on a desktop printer. Imagine a world without Adobe. As Adobe Systems celebrates it 25th anniversary, it's important to recognize how much Adobe is responsible for the way we communicate today. Back in 1982, two enterprising and talented computer scientists left Xerox PARC to form their own company. John Warnock and Chuck Geschke had been working on a computer language that would enable the printing of smooth detailed graphics, liberating graphic designers from X-Acto knives and Rubylith. (It's a testament...

Does anyone know a way to save a webpage (html) as a PDF File without the software automatically adding in page breaks? I have tried the "Print to PDF" function, but it always puts in page breaks and I can't find any "preference" option that would allow me to turn that function off. I have tried by using the "Create PDF" function in the Adobe Acrobat software. That does allow me to create a single page up to 200 inches, but I want it larger than that. In short, I want the PDF file to be a WYSIWYG (what you...

Amid threats of a lawsuit from Adobe, Microsoft acknowledged Friday that it would remove support for saving files in PDF from Office 2007, as well as dropping its own rival format XPS from the productivity suite and Windows Vista. The changes follow a breakdown of talks between the two technology giants after Microsoft announced last year it would include native PDF publishing with the release of Office 2007. The feature has long been a top request from customers, the company said at the time, and other office suites have the capability. But Adobe was unhappy with the move and a...

Dispute could remove PDF support from upcoming version of Office and prompt lawsuit.Adobe is forcing Microsoft to remove PDF support from the test versions of its updated Microsoft Office and may sue the software giant, according to reports Friday. The two companies have been in negotiations over the use of PDF–short for Portable Document Format—in Office, but the talks came to an abrupt end this week, according to The Wall Street Journal. Microsoft wants to allow Office users to save their documents from Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in PDF files, as users of the open-source software suite OpenOffice.org can do....
  • Will Adobe Take Its Microsoft Malcontent to the Courtroom?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Adobe is poised to sue Microsoft over Microsoft's planned PDF support in Office 2007. Microsoft allegedly is removing the export-to-PDF capability at Adobe's request. It's not surprising that Adobe Systems is worried about Microsoft's growing encroachments into its core markets. But now Adobe is said to be ready to take its dissatisfaction to the courts. The Wall Street Journal reported on June 2 that Adobe is poised to launch an antitrust suit in Europe against Microsoft, following the break-down of four-month-long talks over Microsoft's Office 2007 PDF plans. Microsoft announced in October 2005...

Opinion: It's not coincidence that after Massachusetts made it clear that it would support open formats, Microsoft is now going to include PDF in the next version of Office. What is Microsoft up to, anyway, with its sudden plan to finally support PDF? It wasn't announced by Bill Gates loudly to the world at the Professional Developer Conference a few weeks ago. It also wasn't proclaimed to the Microsoft faithful at its recent Most Valuable Professional Global Summit. No, instead, Microsoft quietly squeaked out the news on a Saturday afternoon in Microsoft Office Program Manager Brian Jones' Weblog. Could it...

I just opened up an Acrobat file, from which I want to select and copy text. However, when I open it, under Acrobat Reader, and move the cursor over the text, the cursor remains as an arrow. That is, it doesn't change into an I-beam, and allow me to highlight text. This situation occurs even though I have clicked on the "select text" command button, on the toolbar on top. Is there a setting somewhere I have to change? The text select works with other PDFs. The only thing different is that the PDF that's giving me problems was e-mailed...
  • U.S. military security defeated by copy and paste

Experts are warning people to be careful with electronic documents that contain sensitive data after a breach in which classified U.S. military information thought to be hidden in a PDF document was uncovered. Portions of the document had been "blacked out" by electronic means. But apparently, it was possible for outsiders to copy and paste the blacked-out sections into another file--and see the text that had been hidden. The document is a report written after an investigation into the death of Italian citizen Nicola Calipari at a checkpoint in Iraq. It contains both classified and unclassified information about what happened...

Acrobat and also Ethereal suffer vulnerability alerts. Adobe has patched two bugs in its ubiquitous Acrobat Reader application that could allow an attacker to take over a user's system via a malicious pdf file attached to an e-mail message. The bugs affect Windows, Mac OS X and Unix. Separately, developers warned of bugs in Ethereal, a popular network protocol analyser, that could allow an attacker to take over a system. Security research company iDefense warned of the bug affecting Windows and Mac in an advisory published on the Bugtraq mailing list late on Tuesday. The problem is a format string...

I have a Word document that I want to turn into a PDF. The document has Word headings ("Heading 1" etc) and hyperlinks. I also downloaded the 30 day trial of Acrobat Professional onto my computer, which is running Windows XP Home. I had hoped that Acrobat Professional was smart enough to recognize the headings and hyperlinks, and to create them within the PDF. But from the documentation I've seen, neither is created automatically. I had to create the PDF bookmarks manually, as well as the hierarchical structure. I don't mind doing it, but if the document had many headings,...
