I had in my car two fourteen year olds and one thirteen year old. All were familiar with the Sandusky case, so I wasn’t exposing them to sordid information they didn’t already know. None of them, however, knew about Mike McQueary’s involvement, or lack thereof. I gave them a simple multiple choice question: You walk into a room and see a 50 year old man raping a 10 year old boy. Do you (a) attack the man and try to drag him off the boy or (b) sneak away and, hours later, ask your parents what you should do? The...

Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno's long service at the university theoretically puts him in line for a pension of more than $500,000 a year, according to an Associated Press analysis of state public pension records. Paterno's pension records obtained Tuesday from the State Employees' Retirement System credit him with more than 60 years in the system. The formula used to determine benefits makes him eligible for a pension equal to 100 percent of the average of his three highest-salary years. His pay rose from $541,000 to $568,000 over the past three full calendar years.

The mother of the boy identified as Victim 1 in the Penn State sex abuse scandal said her son broke down in tears when he heard accused child molester Jerry Sandusky claim on television they were just "horsing around." When she asked her son why he cried, "He said, 'Because I'm afraid. I'm afraid he'll go free.'" The mom said she reassured her son that is not likely to happen. "There's other witnesses, probably more victims out there to come forward yet," she told her son, and she urged others with information to speak up. Her son is one of...

STATE COLLEGE, Pa (Reuters) - The lawyer for the Penn State football coach charged with child sex abuse said in an interview on Monday the boy at the center of a 2002 incident detailed in the grand jury's report had been identified and said it never happened. Jerry Sandusky, the former defensive coordinator for the Penn State Nittany Lions, was arrested more than a week ago on charges he sexually abused eight young boys over a 15-year period. Speaking to sportscaster Bob Costas, Joe Amendola, who represents Sandusky, said "we anticipate we're going to have at least several of those...

"Success with Honor" is the motto of Penn State's athletic program. They got it half right. The alleged sexual abuse of young boys by former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky is disgusting, outrageous, and immoral. That so many at the school's highest level allegedly engaged either in covering up serial abuses, or turned a blind eye to them in order to maintain the "integrity" of the football program and its legendary coach, Joe Paterno, adds insult to unfathomable injury. Baseball may still be called the national pastime, but football has become the national religion. College football is played on Saturday, the...

  • Sandusky lawyer impregnated a teen

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The lawyer for accused child molester Jerry Sandusky apparently likes his women young. Defense attorney Joe Amendola, 63, representing Sandusky in the sexual molestation case roiling Penn State and Joe Paterno’s legendary football program, impregnated a teenager and later married her, The Daily has learned. According to documents filed with Centre County Courthouse, Amendola served as the attorney for Mary Iavasile’s emancipation petition on Sept. 3, 1996, just weeks before her 17th birthday. The emancipation request said Mary graduated from high school in two years with a 3.69 grade point average and maintained a full-time job...

When the Israeli government captured Nazi mass murderer Adolf Eichmann, journalist Hannah Arendt was struck by the fact that Eichmann appeared to be a nondescript accountant type. He was not highly intelligent, and he did not appear to be particularly vicious. This led Arendt to the conclusion that anyone could, under the right ideological circumstances, become evil. Evil, she said, was banal. This was an exaggeration of the case. Eichmann was a willing executioner of Hitler's orders; he identified deeply with Hitler's anti-Semitism. He was not just a cog in the system, he was an active system-maker. But there is...

A critical break in the investigation of Jerry Sandusky came via a posting on the Internet: a random mention that a Penn State football coach, years before, might have seen something ugly, but kept silent. Investigators with the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office had by 2010 already come to the conclusion that Sandusky, the longtime defensive coordinator for Joe Paterno’s Nittany Lions, was a serial molester, according to two people with knowledge of the case. But what had started with a complaint of sexual assault from a high school freshman had grown to include another matter altogether: whether Penn State had...

Sandusky horror story continues to get more disturbingBy Gregg Doyel | CBSSports.com National Columnist Tuesday November 15, 2011 - 11:57 AM **SNIP** Sandusky got out of jail for free. An unsecured bond is merely a promise -- that's all Sandusky had to give, a promise -- that the defendant will show up in court. If he doesn't show up, he'd be on the hook for $100,000. By then, the defendant could be in Costa Rica. The judge who set Sandusky free for free? Her name is Leslie Dutchcot. She has volunteered with Sandusky's charity, The Second Mile, the one that...

Franco Harris has been an outspoken supporter of Joe Paterno in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse allegations. So much so that Harris, a Pro Football Hall of Fame running back who played for Paterno at Penn State, was fired by The Meadows Racetrack and Casino as a spokesman, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. The racetrack is located in Washington, Pa., just outside Pittsburgh. Harris publicly expressed his displeasure over Paterno's firing last week. “I feel that the (Board of Trustees) made a bad decision in letting Joe Paterno go,” Harris said, according to the paper. “I’m very disappointed...

Representatives of Penn State's campus police and State College police said Wednesday they have no record of having received any report from a Penn State assistant football coach about his having witnessed an alleged rape of a boy by former coach Jerry Sandusky. The police departments' statements don't corroborate those made in an e-mail from the assistant coach, Mike McQueary, who said he witnessed the alleged incident in a Penn State locker room in 2002. Lisa M. Powers, a Penn State spokeswoman, told CNN that the university police has no record of any police report filed by McQueary. "Today was...

The vice chairman of the Second Mile, the charity founded by an assistant Penn State football coach who faces child sexual abuse charges, said Tuesday that he couldn't predict whether the organization would remain viable beyond December. The Second Mile, of State College, Pa., has about 20 employees and had revenue of $2.2 million last year. It has enough cash to last through the end of the year, said David Woodle, vice chairman of the Second Mile. Gov. Tom Corbett's office confirmed the state has suspended a planned $3 million grant to the Second Mile "pending further review." The grant...

EXCERPT The Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts announced Wednesday that it was bringing in a Westmoreland County senior district judge to preside over Sandusky's preliminary hearing. Robert E. Scott is taking over the hearing from Centre County District Judge Leslie Dutchcot. Dutchcot has donated money to The Second Mile, a charity established by Sandusky for at-risk children and the place where authorities say he met his victims. The office said Scott has no known ties to Penn State or The Second Mile. The hearing is scheduled for Dec. 7. Some plaintiffs' lawyers are starting to advertise on their websites for...

A new victim is claiming another member of the Penn State faculty sexually abused him years ago, and he said when he brought his abuse complaints to university officials, he was turned away. --snip-- Neisworth was later charged with multiple counts of child sexual abuse in Cecil County, Md., in 2005. However, McLaughlin claimed that at the time, Penn State officials said an indictment wasn't enough to investigate one of their faculty members.
