First on CNN: Conservative group to target Romney "If you support the principles of the Republican Party platform, as I do, then it's important that we make sure the GOP nominates someone who has supported and fought for those principles. On almost every single important issue facing America today, Mitt Romney has fought against conservatives and Republicans. He's been a liberal on fiscal issues, a liberal on social issues, and a liberal on national security issues," says Lloyd Marcus, Chairman of Campaign to Defeat Barack Obama, in a statement to CNN. Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney is on pace to raise between $11 million and $13 million for the latest fund-raising quarter, a haul that would be much lower than the $18.2 million haul he brought in during the previous three months, according to a source familiar with the campaign’s finances. Romney’s strong performance in a trio of recent debates had helped his fund-raising by motivating his existing supporters, but it was not enough to move some of the fence-sitters over to his camp, according to the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the campaign has not publicly...

Right now, it’s not easy being Mitt Romney. Every time he turns around, conservatives are looking for someone new to embrace, someone Who Isn’t Him. This week, following Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s partial implosion at the Orlando, Fla., GOP debate, the hot ticket is Chris Christie. On Wednesday, Romney had his game face on when asked about Christie, who continues to deny he’s running even as calls for such a candidacy from some in the Republican establishment grow louder and louder. Initially, Romney suggested to the crew on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that the media were just stirring up trouble, but...

According to the survey, which was released Monday, 28 percent of Republicans and independents who lean towards the GOP say they support Perry as their party's presidential nominee, with Romney at 21 percent. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is at ten percent, with Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who's making his third bid for the White House, former Godfather's Pizza CEO and radio talk show host Herman Cain, and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, all at seven percent. The poll indicates that Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota is at four percent, with former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania at three...

SALT LAKE CITY — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is taking a new approach to hammering Pres. Barack Obama and campaigning in Iowa. Romney seems to be choosing his words more carefully as he verbally attacks Obama, Politico concludes in an article published Thursday. The piece compares a Romney campaign stop in Pennsylvania last month with his visit Wednesday to Southern California. "Romney spoke Wednesday in front of a long-defunct mall near Los Angeles, and repeatedly pointed out that the mall's closure wasn't entirely Obama's fault. 'Obviously, the challenges here are not all the result of the current administration,' Romney...

Boarded-up shops and a nearly empty parking lot provided the backdrop for former Masschusetts' Gov. Mitt Romney’s visit today to a struggling shopping center near the intersection of Victory and Laurel Canyon boulevards. Romney, presumed to be among the leading Republican contenders for the presidency in 2012, said President Barack Obama’s economic policies have contributed to the decline of this and many other malls across America. “Proposing raising taxes did not put people back to work. Obamacare made it less likely for employers to want to hire people. The talk about cap-and-trade and higher energy costs made it less likely...

Any candidate for president can fall victim to occasional stumbles, lapses, gaffes and clunkers. But Mitt Romney has a shot at raising ineptitude to an art form. The other day, he had to answer a question about how the economy has fared under the current administration. Before he was done, though, Romney managed to give the impression that if he dove off a dock, he'd miss the water. He also undermined his chief assets in the campaign: a supposed mastery of economic issues and a reputation for competence. Over and over, the former Massachusetts governor has accused President Barack Obama...

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney on Thursday backtracked on a central theme of his presidential campaign: that President Obama has made a struggling U.S. economy even worse. "I didn't say that things are worse," Romney said at a press conference in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Mitt Romney’s pinch of humor falls flat in N.H. "Gov. Mitt Romney. The GOP presidential candidate, fresh off a win at the debate in Manchester, N.H., yesterday popped into Mary Ann’s Diner in Derry, where he thought he’d win over the waitresses by pretending one of them tried to grab his butt. During the photo op in front of the jukebox with the poodle skirt-wearing gals, Romney suddenly jumped forward with a startled look on his face, and said, “Oh, my goodness!” For the record, not one of startled servers did pinch an inch. “I would never do that,” one...

The first votes for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination are still months away, but Ohioans have already given nearly a quarter of a million dollars to would-be candidates, including $58,000 to “SarahPAC,” former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s political action committee. Trailing just behind Palin in cash from Ohioans is former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s “Free and Strong America PAC,” which has received $50,000. Ohio, long a bellwether in presidential politics, isn’t necessarily considered a must-win for Republican primary candidates. But the enthusiasm a candidate musters in the Buckeye state — including financial contributions — can be indicative of how they’ll...

Mr. Romney's campaign said he would still compete in Iowa's caucuses, now slated February, 2012. But the former Massachusetts governor's absence from the Aug. 13 straw poll will likely diminish his chances, some Iowa officials say, while raising the odds that whoever wins the poll will be best positioned to claim the status as Mr. Romney's top rival for the nomination. According to 2008 election-day surveys, 60% of Iowa caucus-goers called themsevles evangelical or born-again Christians. In the New Hampshire primary, the figure was 23%. In the general election that year, about a quarter of voters in both parties were...

A week after his Twitter debut, “30 Rock” star Alec Baldwin tweeted heavily about politics and 2012 presidential contenders, possibly indicating that he himself will run for office in 2012. The actor, who said earlier this year that he’s “very, very interested” in a political position, is rumored to be leaving “30 Rock” when his contract expires in 2012, just in time for the election. “I want to take the opportunity to state that although my days on network TV may be numbered, I hope ‘30 Rock’ goes on forever,” Baldwin wrote in a Huffington Post piece in April. Baldwin...

Only Sarah Palin can Derail Mitt RomneyPosted: June 3, 2011 | Author: pollinsider | Filed under: General | 1 Comment »So, I may be about to get Dick Morris on you, but my official prediction is that Obama will be facing either Romney or Palin in 2012. If Palin does not end up running, Mitt Romney wins the nomination.First, if Sarah Palin does not run, Mitt Romney will be the nominee. I believe she will but, but of course many in the establishment see “no signs†that she is interested in such a race. Polling suggest that, surprisingly, Mitt Romney...

Wanna run for president? Don’t make the mistake of announcing a campaign. Just look at those poor souls roaming Iowa and New Hampshire in search of Republican voters. They have considerable resumes and, in many cases, a pricey campaign team, but they made the grave error of actually telling people they’re seeking the Republican nomination. On Thursday, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will join their ranks when he makes it official in New Hampshire. Meanwhile, a former Alaska governor who didn’t complete an entire term and two current governors who have expressed little-to-no interest in the race continue to garner...

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — President Romney. How does that sound? Better than President Gingrich, President Pawlenty or even President Palin? You betcha. Why? Because for all his flip-flopping and lack of charisma, Mitt Romney is a serious person — an “adult” in today’s political parlance — with a real track record of accomplishment. This week, Romney actually showed what any serious Republican hopeful in the 2012 presidential election campaign needs to show: the beginnings of a backbone. It looks like Romney may have flipped his last flop on what is supposed to be the bane of his existence, the statewide health-care...

TUESDAY UPDATE: TWEAKING MITT. With Mitt Romney set to formally announce his presidential candidacy on Thursday in Stratham, the state Democratic Party is ramping up its attacks on the former Massachusetts governor. Later today, the party will announce the availability of “Two Sides of Mitt Romney” t-shirts on its web site. The front of the shirt says: “Mitt Romney: pro-health care reform; pro-individual mandate; pro-Recovery Act; pro-immigration reform; pro-cap and trade; pro-gay rights.” On the back of the shirt, the same issues are listed but with an “anti-” prefix before each one. The party lists several news reports from this...

Mitt Romney's speech to supporters in Des Moines Friday was cut short by a fire drill thanks to a bag of burning microwave popcorn. The former Massachusetts governor and soon-to-be official 2012 presidential candidate was fielding questions about his commitment to the first-in-the-nation state at Des Moines' State Historical Society of Iowa building when a fire drill forced him to cut his appearance short. "Discretion is the better part of valor," Romney said, urging people to head outside as the alarm sounded in the background. "I wasn't trying to get out of tough questions, I promise," he said later.
