<p>Mike Villines ignited political dynamite Thursday afternoon when he announced his candidacy for the 29th Assembly District's Republican nomination. Before sunset, Assembly Republican Leader Dave Cox had weighed in on the race. By Friday morning, fax machines were working overtime and e-mails were flying as if it were the closing days of a hotly contested election.</p>

<p>A little bit of background. Duly-elected State Assemblyman Steve Samuelian is one of the most fierce conservative Republicans in the State of California. He's also a human being. About three weeks ago on a Saturday night at 9:45 he drove into a gas station to ask for directions. The female police officer gave him directions and then sent him on his way.</p>

Five prominent Valley Republicans, including two members of Congress, called Sunday on Steve Samuelian to resign from the state Assembly. Their two-paragraph joint statement came a week after the Clovis Republican was pulled over on Parkway Drive, a known area for prostitution in Fresno. Police did not issue a citation, but after further investigation recommended that Samuelian be cited for loitering for the purpose of soliciting an act of prostitution. Some of you know that my husband (freeper Lager) works for Assemblyman Mike Briggs (R-Clovis). Briggs ran for the new congressional district seat and lost in the primary back in March. (Yes, it was a devastating blow; you have no idea.) Anyway, Mike Briggs will be leaving the Assembly but last night Steve Samuelian, a fine young Armenian, won big with 62% of the vote.
