DOVER, Del. - Two students were shot at Delaware State University early Friday and the campus was locked down as police searched for a gunman, officials said. Classes were canceled for the day. A male student was hospitalized in stable condition, and a female student was hospitalized with injuries that are considered serious, according to a news release on the university's Web site. "They could be potentially life-threatening," university spokesman Carlos Holmes said. Police hoped to find out more information once the victims were able to talk. "We haven't had a chance to talk to them yet, and that's probably a big reason why the suspect is still at large," Holmes told KYW-TV of Philadelphia. The students were shot near Memorial Hall around 1 a.m., the news release said. Students were instructed to stay in their residence halls until further notice, and nonessential university employees were told not to report to work. At the university's main entrance, swing-arm gates were down to prevent people from driving onto campus. A historically black college founded in 1890 as the State College for Colored Students, Delaware State had about 3,600 students from 38 states and 31 countries in 2006. The 400-acre campus was surrounded Friday by groups of recreational vehicles belonging to NASCAR fans in town for this weekend's races at the Dover Downs Speedway.

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas: Somewhere in the United States, Andrew Golden will likely step outside of prison Friday for the first time as a free man since being arrested as an 11-year-old after he and another boy killed four classmates and an English teacher at a school. Golden, the younger of two boys who used deer rifles to kill five people at the Jonesboro Westside Middle School in 1998, turns 21 Friday.

TORONTO, Canada (AP) -- A 14-year-old student was shot and killed at a Toronto high school Wednesday, forcing frightened teens to stay in their locked-down classrooms for hours as police searched the building into the evening. Police said it was not a situation in which a gunman was roaming the halls, but it was not known if the gunman was still in the school as the search began. The students finally were released just before 6 p.m., more than three hours after the lockdown. Police said there were no arrests and no weapon had been found in the shooting at...

Those who advocate the complete disarming of American society so that crazy foreign students can’t shoot up campuses and will, somehow, be forced to instead utilize baseball bats are sadly misled. Utopian ideals, and unworkable solutions, will not solve or prevent such incidents at schools, churches and malls. Frankly, it is incredible that in a post 9-11 world that the citizenry of this nation are forced to be helpless and vulnerable by both the law and institutional ‘policies’ by people who cannot provide even the most elementary security to those it has disarmed. Virginia Tech has some 30,000 plus students...

Emsdetten, Germany (dpa) - Pathologists in Germany said Tuesday a teenaged youth who shot and wounded five people at his old school the previous day killed himself with a gunshot in the mouth. Sebastian Bosse, 18, an enthusiast for both live-action and virtual shooting games, was armed with reproductions of old-fashioned muzzle-loaders which can be freely bought on the internet, police said. The attack revived debate in Germany on banning first-person shooter video games. Edmund Stoiber, premier of the state of Bavaria, said he would introduce legislation against them in federal parliament, adding, "Killer games should be prohibited in Germany."...

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - As worldwide donations for victims of the West Nickel Mines School shootings approach $4 million, three of the girls wounded in the Oct. 2 attack have returned to classes. Two other girls who survived the shootings suffered severe head wounds and are likely to have long-term disabilities. One is home while the other remains hospitalized, a spokesman for the Nickel Mines Accountability Committee said Monday. The families “are dealing with pain and loss, but I’ve heard a number of comments about the remarkable recoveries of the girls,” said Herman Bontrager, spokesman for the nine-member community group...

A gunman has been found dead after storming a school in Germany, injuring a teacher and several pupils. According to reports, explosive material was found on the body of the man at the Geschwister Scholl school in Emsdetten. The man, reported to have been a former pupil of the school, apparently killed himself as police circled the building. While resolved, the incident stirs unhappy memories of 2002, when a former pupil killed 18 people in his school. Those killings prompted a wave of German soul-searching about violence and school security, coming just months after another gunman had walked into a...

It is now all but certain that the terrorists' attack on the school could have been prevented. According to internal police documents obtained by the newspaper Novaya Gazeta, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in Moscow knew four hours in advance that an attack on a school in Beslan was planned for September 1, 2004. The information came from a man named Arsamikov who had been arrested in the city of Shali in Chechnya. The information, however, was not acted upon. Equally puzzling, the terrorists trained for weeks without interference in the woods in the republic of Ingushetia, which neighbors...

Marie Roberts, the widow of the killer of five Amish girls in a schoolroom massacre in rural Pennsylvania, has written to the families of his victims thanking them for their forgiveness. The hamlets of Nickel Mines, where the children lived, and Georgetown, the home of Charles Roberts, a milkman who killed himself after shooting dead the girls and injuring a further five, are slowly recovering. At the weekend, Mrs Roberts remained too distressed to give an interview but she issued a letter to her neighbours. Mrs Roberts, now a lone parent to three children, said her family was overwhelmed by the...

Youngsters in a suburban Fort Worth school district are being taught not to sit there like good boys and girls with their hands folded if a gunman invades the classroom, but to rush him and hit him with everything they got - books, pencils, legs and arms. "Getting under desks and praying for rescue from professionals is not a recipe for success," said Robin Browne, a major in the British Army reserve and an instructor for Response Options, the company providing the training to the Burleson schools. That kind of fight-back advice is all but unheard of among schools, and...

Blunt backs away from ill-advised school safety suggestion A day after a school shooting in Joplin, Gov. Matt Blunt’s office clarified his position on teachers carrying guns. He does not endorse the preposterous idea. Blunt spokesman Spence Jackson said the governor “wasn’t in any way suggesting that we should arm all teachers.” That’s a relief. Blunt was in Joplin at the time a student threatened administrators and fired a shot into the ceiling of Joplin Memorial Middle School just before classes began on Monday. The governor said then that allowing teachers to carry guns is “an interesting idea worth discussing.”...

In a remarkable moment of candor, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell today acknowledged that stronger gun laws could not have prevented the horrible shooting at the Amish school in Lancaster County. Rendell, a staunch gun control advocate, admitted, “I believe with all my heart that we need more gun control” during a live press conference. But he also acknowledged that tougher gun laws would not have prevented gunman Charles Carl Roberts IV from carrying out his deadly attack, noting, “You can make all the changes you want, but you can never stop a random act of violence by someone intent on...

Police raise doubts on Roberts’ motive Shooter’s molestation story false, family says By Brett Hambright Intelligencer Journal Published: Oct 05, 2006 1:54 AM EST LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - Charles Carl Roberts IV was calm but determined when he entered a Bart Township school Monday, 45 minutes before he shot 10 Amish girls execution-style in front of a blackboard. In his final conversation with his wife, Marie, seconds before opening fire on the victims and killing himself, Roberts said an event had tortured him for two decades: He claimed he molested two children 20 years ago. His reasoning for the massacre...

A gunman who killed five girls in an attack on a Pennsylvania Amish school told his wife he had molested two young members of his family 20 years ago.Charles Carl Roberts made the claim during a phone call to his wife just prior to starting shooting the girls. He made references to an incident 20 years ago in suicide notes and said he had been haunted by dreams of repeating his actions. Police said it was possible his attack on the girls was sexually motivated. "He said 'I am not coming home,' and he states I molested some minor family...

NICKEL MINES, Penn. (Reuters) - The 32-year-old dairy truck driver who stormed a one-room school and killed five girls apparently chose the schoolhouse because it was an easy target rather than because he had a grudge against the Amish, police said. Pennsylvania police said the man lost a child of his own three years ago, and they were investigating suicide notes that he left as well as statements he made to his wife that he was seeking revenge for something that occurred 20 years ago. Two girls died overnight, bringing to five the number of students killed, police said on...

NICKEL MINES, Pa. The county coroner says at least six people were killed in a shooting at a one-room Amish schoolhouse, where state police said earlier a gunman killed "a number" of people Monday in Pennsylvania's bucolic Lancaster County. "So far six confirmed dead and the helicopters are pulling into (Lancaster General Hospital) like crazy," Lancaster County Coroner G. Gary Kirchner said. It was unclear if the shooter was among the six. State police Cpl. Ralph Striebig had said earlier the shooter was among the dead, and a number of people were injured. Three girls, all critical with gunshot wounds,...
