That gruesome sight in December 2015 soon became a crime scene, one that eventually implicated six students and recent graduates of a prestigious Honolulu prep school whose alumni include former president Barack Obama. While on a camping trip the night before the hiker’s arrival, authorities alleged, the boys and young men had hiked to the Ka’ena Point Natural Area Reserve and mercilessly slaughtered at least 15 Laysan albatrosses, federally protected birds that have been the focus of a 26-year-long conservation effort. Nearly a dozen of their eggs were crushed; six other eggs failed to hatch due to the death of...

After Neil Armstrong's death, his widow, Carol, discovered a white cloth bag in a closet, containing what were obviously either flight or space related artifacts. She contacted Allan Needell, curator of the Apollo collection at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, and provided photographs of the items. Needell, who immediately realized that the bag—known to the astronauts as the Purse - and its contents could be hardware from the Apollo 11 mission, asked the authors for support in identifying and documenting the flight history and purpose of these artifacts. After some research it became apparent that the purse and...

Souvenir vendors in Washington say once-thriving sales of the garish merchandise fawning over the president are nowhere near what they were. In Union Station, the souvenir shop once dubbed the Obama Store because of its mostly Obama-related selection has closed. "That moment in history is gone," said Molly Andolina, a professor of political science at DePaul University, in the president's adopted home town of Chicago. "You're going to only see the enthusiasts" continue to buy, she said. Using merchandise sales as a measure of public opinion is anything but definitive. The downward trend in sales could simply mean that the...

Brig. Gen. David Elicerio made the trip down to Mankato on Saturday to count a few helicopters and Humvees. But he wasn't going to mention whether he liked a new movie being filmed there, called "Souvenirs." "I've been told I have no opinion of this movie," said Elicerio, who commanded 2,600 members of the Minnesota National Guard's Red Bull Infantry through their now-renowned 22-month deployment in Iraq, which lasted from September 2005 to July 2007. It was the longest stretch in Iraq for any U.S. unit since the war there began. In fact, with regard to war movies in general:...

AMSTERDAM (AP) -- It's not green cheese, but it might as well be. The Dutch national museum said Thursday that one of its prized possessions, a rock supposedly brought back from the moon by U.S. astronauts, is just a piece of petrified wood. Rijksmuseum spokeswoman Xandra van Gelder, who oversaw the investigation that proved the piece was a fake, said the museum will keep it anyway as a curiosity. "It's a good story, with some questions that are still unanswered," she said. "We can laugh about it." The museum acquired the rock after the death of former Prime Minister Willem...

Many American presidents have kept prized possessions within reach during their White House years. Franklin D. Roosevelt cherished a 19th century ship model of the U.S.S. Constitution. One of Dwight D. Eisenhower’s favorite gifts was an engraved Steuben glass bowl from his cabinet. And sitting on John F. Kennedy’s desk in the Oval Office was a paperweight made from a coconut shell he had carved with a distress message after his PT-109 was sunk during World War II.

NORRISTOWN — When Wendy Lavin discovered that jail cell writings from her daughter's killer were for sale on the Internet, she was horrified. "I was disgusted. I felt sick to my stomach," said Lavin, whose 20-year-old daughter, Jennifer Louise Still, was stabbed to death by serial killer John Charles Eichinger in 1999. "I could not believe that after everything I had been through with the murder and trial, it was like it was happening all over again. I could not believe that something so horrific was going on and I wasn't aware of it." Lavin discovered the Web site when...

DENVER (AP) - A 24-year-old Army sergeant was removed from an American Airlines flight after an inert land mine was found in his checked baggage, the Transportation Safety Administration said. The soldier, whose name was not released, could face civil penalties for trying to put a prohibited item aboard a flight, Fierberg said. No criminal charges would be filed, he said. The man was released by police, but the...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The estate of former Beatle George Harrison (news) filed a $10 million law suit on Tuesday against one of the last doctors to treat the late rock musician, claiming he violated patient confidentiality and misused his relationship to procure souvenirs. It also charged Lederman with using Harrison's treatment to gain publicity for himself...

THE hole where Saddam Hussein was found is to be taken to America — as a monument to his capture. US military engineers plan to excavate a huge block of Iraqi soil containing the underground chamber. It might even be turned into a tourist attraction — with money raised going to relatives of soldiers killed in Iraq. Commanders want Saddam’s last hiding place to be displayed at the giant Fort Hood military base in Texas. It is home to the 4th Infantry Division, which seized Saddam on December 13. US Army spokesman Major Gordon Tate said yesterday in the toppled...
