British businessman Duncan Goose has told of his surprise at finding a squirrel peering up at him from his toilet. Mr Goose, 42, was in Malawi to check on aid projects backed by his company's One projects when he rescued the forlorn animal. He was preparing for bed in his hotel room when he discovered the struggling squirrel. He said: 'I was concerned it was going to jump out and bite me, so I put the lid back down and left it for a minute as I wasn't sure what to do.' When he returned shortly after to take a...

SOMERS —— The first call came right at the beginning of March. A homeowner was removing old ceiling tiles from the attic when a litter of baby squirrels fell out. They were about 2 weeks old — tiny and pink with only the faintest traces of gray fur and eyes that still hadn't opened. The creatures could easily have been mistaken for mice, as they often are at that age. The homeowner said the mother was nowhere to be found, so wildlife rehabilitator Chris Clark of Somers agreed to take in the babies, beginning the spring season — by the...

A squirrel's fascination with a statue of a dog has brought hours of light entertainment to a Russian suburb. The frisky rodent looked confused as to why the dog wasn't moving and cannot seem to get its head around the fact that it is an ornament and not real. The picture was taken by a photographer in the garden of his house just outside of Moscow. Grey squirrels are ubiquitous in North America - scurrying across our lawns and up our trees, burying nuts and taunting our tantalised dogs.Bright-eyed and bushy tailed, squirrels are cute, furry and, apparently, very edible. The notion of stewed squirrel may not tempt everybody's taste buds, but in an age of tightening belts and financial severity, the humble abundance of the squirrel is causing some to reconsider its epicurean virtue. American hunter William Hovey Smith, a self-described outdoor enthusiast, loves a spot of squirrel stew, made of course from critters he hunts himself. "It is certainly a very American dish. We've...

A resident in the 400 block South Madison Avenue returned home about 1:30 p.m. Oct. 14 after a few days away to find a faucet running, the television on and a squirrel running around inside his home. The man lives alone and no one else has a key. Police investigated and determined that the squirrel, which had gotten inside the house somehow, had been running around on a counter and knocked a bottle of dishwashing soap over, which turned the faucet on. In addition, the squirrel apparently stepped on the television remote on the counter turning on the TV. “The...

SAFFORD, AZ (CNN) - The state of Arizona is getting $400,000 in federal money to pay for new bridges. But these bridges are not for humans. They are for squirrels. Not everyone is convinced the project is a good use of taxpayer money. The Mount Graham Red Squirrel is cute, but in trouble. At last count there were only about 250 left in the world, so officials have put a lot into keeping it from going extinct. Now, the Arizona Department of Transportation plans to spend $400,000, $1,600 squirrel, to give red squirrels little bridges over the road. Squirrels have...

This .. I know is an odd question and I couldn't figure out exactly how or where to post it so-o-o "You Won"! 8) A lot of folks DO look upon squirrels as a pest but I kinda get a kick out of watching them. I have never seen a squirrel eat a back-yard mushroom .. until today! I don't know what kind of mushroom this would be but I guess that it is the typical, growing over buried, dead wood type that grows in forested areas. (my home is in a 'forest') I walked around looking for a 'dead...

William Thomas was convicted in February of misdemeanor animal abuse, and is now serving out his 30-day sentence. According to Newsday, he used a pellet gun to shoot the animal at his home back in 2008, and neighbors have told authorities that the old man would leave bait in his yard and shoot at animals from a window. He's been arrested 12 times in 5 years for wildlife violations. His daughter has expressed concern over proper medical treatment while locked up, as he...

Smokey the adolescent squirrel is resting comfortably under an oxygen tent in a private room at the Animal Care Center off Club Deluxe Road in Hammond following a jolting rescue early Friday by members of the Natalbany Fire Department. As of late Friday afternoon it had not been determined if Smokey is recovering at taxpayer expense or if he is covered under the new national health care plan. At about 4:45 a.m. Friday, Natalbany firefighters answered an alarm at Joe’s Trailer Park, 46068 Milton Road Lot 51. When they arrived, the mobile home was beyond saving, said department spokesman Gary...

A theme park has been forced to ban a daredevil squirrel from one of its rides as its antics posed a health and safety risk. The rodent was said to be causing headaches for operators at Alton Towers by getting in the way of improvement work on an attraction at the resort. Workers noticed it riding the revamped Sonic Spinball roller coaster as it was tested in the mornings and joining visitors who were offered an early go on it before the official opening. The grey-haired animal was also caught stealing food from the workers. A spokeswoman for the Staffordshire...

Whew! With National Penguin Awareness Day behind us, we can finally turn all our energies toward celebrating today's made-up animal-related holiday: Squirrel Appreciation Day. You know, the day when all Americans take time out to remember those feisty, funny, athletic little guys with a penchant for obstacle courses and an unfortunate tendency to overdo it with the fermented pumpkins. Christy Hargrove, a certified wildlife rehabilitator from North Carolina, started Squirrel Appreciation Day back in 2001. [snip]

Clemson University is fighting back against an invasion of squirrels on its South Carolina campus. The Anderson Independent-Mail reports workers spent much of December trapping Eastern gray squirrels, catching and euthanizing the 200 rodents allowed under federal law. The squirrels have caused problems in recent years, killing about 100 mature trees by chewing on the bark for food and making their territory. About 10 percent of the campus' trees have been damaged in some way, likely costing the school about $1 million in the past decade. Clemson officials tried a squirrel birth control program, but it didn't do enough to...

'They have a bit of a reputation for a vicious streak, but this dog certainly got more than it bargained for after pouncing on a baby squirrel it found on the ground. Moments before the hapless baby would have been torn apart, these images show its mother appearing to leap off a nearby tree and attacking the surprised dog. Using its sharp teeth and claws, the squirrel tore into its canine opponent and distracted it so the baby could escape to freedom. It is unclear if the images have been edited, but the startled dog appears in considerable pain as...
