My sis-in-law is going to Cabo for a vacation. It was a great place when I was there but someone on FR posted that it had been so overrun w/crime that soldiers were walking around w/full auto weapons. I googled "crime in Cabo" and got nothing but positive reviews for all but driving from California to Cabo. If one flies in, it's all good. Comments?

WASHINGTON — U.S. citizens were warned Thursday that increasing political violence in Oaxaca City, Mexico, might make the mountain resort too risky to visit. The State Department said the unrest, which began in May as a strike by a local teachers' union, has grown and spread. It said the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City has reports of robberies and assaults in normally peaceful areas of the city. Two people have died in the turmoil. Oaxaca is a historic city in southern Mexico, west of the Yucatan Peninsula, that is popular with tourists. Protesters in the city said Thursday they were...

France Public Announcement November 07, 2005 This Public Announcement is issued to alert Americans to ongoing security concerns in France. Significant unrest that began in the northern suburbs of Paris October 27 has now spread to several locations within the city limits of Paris, and to many other cities throughout France. Angry youth have set fire to many buildings and thousands of vehicles. While damage to property has been extensive, there seems to be no pattern of arsonists directing their anger at ordinary citizens or tourists. This Public Announcement will expire on December 7, 2005. Travelers should be alert to...

RIYADH, 19 May 2005 — The United States has dropped yesterday a year-old warning it issued to its citizens to leave Saudi Arabia but said that they should still “defer non-essential” travel to the Kingdom because of security concerns and possible terrorist attacks. The language used in the current advisory notice differs significantly from that of the April 2004 advisory, which said: “The Department of State warns US citizens to defer travel to Saudi Arabia. Private American citizens currently in Saudi Arabia are strongly urged to depart.” Robert Mueller, FBI director, in his May 12 press conference in the Saudi...

WASHINGTON (Talon News) -- Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO) issued a statement on Thursday blasting soon to be former Homeland Security Sec. Tom Ridge after reports that funding for 2,000 additional border patrol agents mandated by the recently passed intelligence reform bill would likely not be included in the DHS budget proposal. "I'm disappointed but not surprised as Mr. Ridge has never taken border security too seriously," said Tancredo, head of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus. "It's equivalent to denying a crime ridden city more officers for protection, it simply makes no sense." Tancredo also expressed concern that three years after...

15 minutes ago U.S. National - AP WASHINGTON - Twenty-seven Americans have been abducted in Mexico's northern border region over the past six months and two have been killed, the State Department said Thursday. Spokesman Richard Boucher cited those numbers in defending an alert to American citizens about the risks of traveling in the area. Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez had said the State Department public announcement, issued Wednesday, exaggerated the danger. Boucher said he was aware of the Mexican objections but added that the administration believes it is important to inform Americans about security along the border. "We're...

MEXICO CITY -- A U.S. warning about violence in northern Mexico created unexpected friction with a crucial neighbor on Thursday, just as new Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and other new members of George W. Bush's team are starting to take office. Mexico's top Cabinet officer, Interior Secretary Santiago Creel, said in a nationwide television interview Thursday that the U.S. warning issued Wednesday "went too far." He said the United States shares responsibility for problems of violence and drug traffic. "Why didn't they say anything a week ago when I was in that meeting with the secretary of homeland security?"...

WASHINGTON (AP) - The State Department on Wednesday issued a travel warning for Americans visiting Mexico, saying violent criminal activity, including murder and kidnaping, has increased in its northern border region. "U.S. citizens should be aware of the risk posed by the deteriorating security situation," the department said in a public announcement. It added that the great majority of victims are Mexican citizens. The announcement attributed the increased crime to a war between criminal organizations struggling for control of the lucrative narcotics trade. It said the leaders of several major criminal organizations have been arrested, creating a power vacuum. "This...
