The removal of a century-old dam in Santa Cruz County will now benefit endangered fish by supplying a habitat for them to spawn. The demolition of the Mill Creek Dam opens a door that's been closed for more than 100 years to endangered fish, like Coho Salmon to spawn upstream. Heavy equipment was brought in this week to remove the Mill Creek Dam. "The dam would have been spanning the creek right down over there. So, we were able to pull the sediment from behind the dam bring it up and shift it around so the creek could flow unimpeded," said...

Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Wildlife officials in Utah said a 11-year-old boy landed a massive 48-pound trout just six months after reeling in a 41-pound trout. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said Tyler Grimshaw drew attention online in June when the then-10-year-old reeled in a 41-pound trout without any assistance at Flaming Gorge. Grimshaw, now 11, bested his own catch this month by reeling in a 48-pound trout in the same area. Both fish were released back into the lake. "Way to go, Tyler," the division tweeted. The Utah state record for lake trout stands at 53 pounds, 15...

It's the lightest backpacking meal—and one of the easiest and tastiest Freshly caught trout tastes way better than a bag of freeze-dried slop. Backpacking food is often uninspiring. Because vegetables and meat are heavy and inconvenient, they often get left behind. And many easy-to-make, lightweight, dehydrated meals are bland or textureless. It’s a shame when you consider the wealth of free and delicious wild foods we’re surrounded by on so many backpacking trips. Plus, if you gather your meal at camp, it won’t weigh you down on the trail. If you want to go this route, your options are: get...

Aug. 6 (UPI) -- A Utah angler broke a 32-year-old state record when he reeled in a lake trout that weighed in at a staggering 53 pounds. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said Chance Scott was fishing at Flaming Gorge when he reeled in the massive lake trout, which measured 44.1 inches long and 34.7 inches around. The DWR said the 53-pound, 15 ounce lake trout broke the previous state record of 51 pounds, which was set in 1988. "Nice catch, Chance," the DWR tweeted. The world record for lake trout is a 72-pound fish caught in August 1995...

Thomas Knight with the enormous lake trout that broke New Hampshire's 62-year-old state record for the largest lake trout. (CNN)When Thomas Knight set out on the ice to go fishing for lake trout, he was determined to haul in a big one. He came prepared with an 11-inch sucker because big bait attracts big fish, he said. But what he reeled in was bigger than anything he could have imagined. Knight, of Meredith, New Hampshire, caught a lake trout last Tuesday that weighed in at 37.65 pounds, easily breaking the state record that was more than 60 years old. The...

[***] Instead of spending their offseasons training or vacationing, professional baseball, football, and basketball players once tended to take their place in the traditional workforce. During the 1950s, Brooklyn Dodgers outfielder Carl Furillo ran a Queens deli in the winter, and Hall of Fame New York Giants quarterback Y.A. Tittle sold insurance in the summer. In the 1960s, Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown worked as a sales rep for Pepsi when he wasn’t breaking tackles. After reports emerged that fish sellers were labeling rainbow trout as salmon, the Chinese government made a startling announcement. According to the New York Times, Chinese regulators announced this week that, far from cracking down on mislabeled fish, rainbow trout can legally be labeled as salmon. Incorrectly labeled fish—whether accidentally or intentionally—is a worldwide issue. Reports have indicated that much of the world’s fish is mislabeled; the advocacy group Oceana ran a test and found that one in five fish samples were mislabeled worldwide. Sometimes these are understandable: can you really tell the difference between red snapper and red sea...

But then again, muskies will eat just about anything that swims near them, with no prejudice to size or species. In this amazing footage below, a muskie tries to scarf down a big trout. The trout is much too big for the muskie to swallow, like snakes muskie don’t care. If i'st hungry, it eats now. BULLHEAD CITY — Mohave County will explore every avenue to keep the 50-year-old Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery rainbow trout stocking program going, said District 2 Sup. and Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Hildy Angius, R-Bullhead City, as she updated the Colorado River Tea Party Patriots at their Saturday meeting. The program is of great economic benefit to the Tri-state, which relies on sport fishing to help draw tourists to the area. Before the stocking program was suspended, an estimated 4,000 trout were stocked monthly below Davis Dam. The Bullhead City Council passed a resolution in February requesting the Fish and...

A catastrophic landslide 22,500 years ago dammed the upper reaches of northern California's Eel River, forming a 30-mile-long lake, which has since disappeared, and leaving a living legacy found today in the genes of the region's steelhead trout...about 60 miles southeast of Eureka. The river today is 200 miles long, carved into the ground from high in the California Coast Ranges to its mouth in the Pacific Ocean in Humboldt County. Scientists have created hundreds of mutant fish with "six-pack abs" and bulging "shoulders" by beefing them up with new genes. While the fish aren't going to win any beauty contests, the genetically engineered rainbow trout could hold some appeal at market, because they each provide 15 to 20 percent more flesh than standard tout, researchers say. Developed with fish farming in mind, the genetically modified trout is the result of ten years of experimentation by a team led by Terry Bradley of the University of Rhode Island's Department of Fisheries, Animal, and Veterinary Sciences. The team injected 20,000 rainbow trout...

NILE, Wash. – A gigantic landslide that buried a highway, uprooted homes and rerouted a river in Washington state's Cascade Range left hundreds of smaller victims: fish. The landslide that inundated the Naches River last month created a barrier of millions of cubic yards of silt, mud and rock that slowed — and likely confused — spawning salmon and hungry trout. Then workers opened a freshly dug river channel that stranded small fish in ponds and marshes. Fisheries biologists from 10 government agencies and private groups are working shifts to try to save the fish. The effort marks a step...

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Steelhead trout season has lured fishermen to Santa Cruz County with hopes of landing one of the feisty fish to reel in.
