Saying Christians and Muslims can be friends, a Muslim scholar from Canada gave 15 reasons why they should to a downtown Tulsa audience Friday night. But a Christian minister from Tulsa who used to be a Muslim questioned the tolerance of his former religion and asked whether a program such as Friday's, held at the Tulsa Convention Center, could even take place in a Muslim nation.

HULBERT -- A vision born 35 years ago on the campus of the University of Kansas and nurtured in a monastery in France moved closer to reality this week, as monks at Our Lady of Clear Creek Monastery moved into their new residence building. The building is the first part of a monastic complex that will include an 80-by-180-foot church with a 110-foot bell tower. "This is a dream come true," said the Rev. Phillip Anderson, the prior, or leader, of the Benedictine community living at the monastery. "All of a sudden, after all these years, it's happening," he said....

A Tulsa Muslim suing his mosque will have to find another judge to hear the case. Judge Tom Thornbrugh recused himself, saying he's already formed an opinion on the suit. The plaintiff in the case is Jamal Miftah. News On 6 anchor Omar Villafranca reports the Muslim man says a 2006 letter to the editor, condemning Islamic terrorists, made him a target at his own mosque. Jamal Miftah is disturbed by Muslims killing in the name of Islam. He wrote an op-ed piece in 2006 calling Al-Qaeda leaders cowards for using young Muslims to attack others. Some members at his...

Brother Dean Stafford preached Sunday on I Corinthians 13, the love chapter, in what is believed to be Tulsa County's oldest church building. Stafford has pastored the small, close-knit congregation for 40 years. For most of its 132 years, the small country church at 12222 S. 129th East Ave. was known simply as the White Church, because it was painted white at a time when most buildings in the area were not painted. The property has gone through various name changes and construction projects, but has been a church since 1875. For the past six decades, the congregation now known...

June 1957 – Residents of Tulsa, Oklahoma are enjoying their city’s anniversary, called “Tulsarama!” Most every city around the country enjoys parties; it’s a big tradition throughout the United States. Tulsa representatives decided they needed something unique and different in order to compete with Oklahoma City. They decided to entomb an automobile in a time capsule, using a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere as the car of choice.

Hundreds crammed into bleachers and behind barricades to see the Belvedere come out of the vault Friday afternoon. It was wet Friday morning, but the crowd that gathered wasn't going to let one day of rain spoil 50 years of history. News On 6 anchor Omar Villafranca reports hundreds of people, young and old, crowded near the courthouse to catch a glimpse of history, 50 years in the making. Simple curiosity drew visitors from all over the world. Silvester Humaj’s ‘59 Buick broke down on the way from Massachusetts. He didn't let car trouble keep him away from seeing the...

TULSA, Okla. - Hundreds watched Friday as a crane lifted a muddy package from a hole in the courthouse lawn: a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere buried to celebrate Oklahoma's 50 years of statehood. The wrapped car — a gold and white two-door hardtop — appeared brown and red as it came out of the hole, but it was unclear whether the color represented dirt or rust. A bit of shiny chrome was visible on the bumper. The car spent the last half-century covered in three layers of protective material and encased in a 12-by-20-foot concrete vault, supposedly tough enough to withstand...

Tulsa - Tulsa Police are searching for a man who has been exposing himself in convenience stores in South Tulsa. They say he is only wearing a diaper. That's right, a diaper. So far, he's been spotted at a store at 81st and Mingo as well as two stores near 91st and Memorial. Police say the man walks into the bathroom wearing plain clothes, then walks out wearing the diaper and goes into the store. Officers say in some cases, the man exposes himself to the attendant. In others, he just stands around in the diaper, talking. Witnesses says the...

(DOWNTOWN TULSA, Okla.) May 25 - Many people in the Hispanic community are not happy with a city council resolution that targets illegal immigrants. The resolution passed last night, and would require city police officers to check the immigration status of anyone arrested for a felony or misdemeanor. If they're found to be illegal, the resolution says police must notify immigration and customs enforcement within 24 hours. When someone is arrested they’re required to provide one of three things, a driver’s license, immigration papers or a green card. If this resolution becomes an ordinance and you don’t have either of...

We covered this on the air yesterday, but again people are demanding details. We've often asked on the air why, if Islam the peaceful religion that many Muslims want us to believe it is, we don't hear more Muslims speaking out against Islamic terrorism. Well, now we may have an explanation. Jamal Miftah is a Muslim residing in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is an immigrant from Pakistan. Jamal Miftah is a member of the Islamic Center of Tulsa Mosque. On October 29th Jiftah wrote an article for the op-ed page of the Tulsa World. Here is what he wrote:

The governing board of Tulsa's Al-Salam mosque ruled Wednesday night that a Pakistani native who had been banned from the mosque can return. Houssam Elsoueissi, president of the operating council at the mosque, said he would announce at Friday's service that Jamal Miftah is free to attend services as long as there is no disturbance, and that no one at the mosque should confront him. Miftah was banned last week after a confrontation at the mosque over a guest commentary he wrote that appeared Oct. 29 in the Tulsa World.
