Victoria Childress DES MOINES, Iowa, November 15, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - An Iowa baker who politely declined to provide a wedding cake for two lesbians based on her Christian values may face legal action from the couple. Same-sex “marriage” was legalized in Iowa in 2009 by the state Supreme Court, and a 2007 state civil rights act disallows discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation in matters of employment, education, housing, and public accommodation. On Tuesday KCCI 8 Des Moines interviewed Trina Vodraska and Janelle Sievers, who said they were “shocked” when a local wedding cake business owner declined to provide the...

"Groundbreaking." "Memorable." "Big." "Remarkable." "Intimate." [?] "Wonderful." "Great." "History-making." "Go Coco!" The above statements were made by various media outlets upon learning of Conan O'Brien's intention to preside over the wedding of a gay couple during the taping of his show "Conan" in New York this week. O'Brien, who is celebrating his first year at TBS, is back in New York this week (for 16 years his previous show, "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" was filmed in New York City). He announced last week that he was going to officiate a gay wedding because same-sex marriages are now legal in...

A Nevada man was arrested on his wedding day, authorities say, after he carried his 56-year-old mother out of the church when she arrived to stop the ceremony. The wedding never happened. Justin Lew Harris, 35, is facing disorderly conduct and coercion charges for the incident, which occurred at Carson Valley United Methodist Church in Gardnerville, Nev., on Monday, Oct. 17. He was released from the Douglas County Jail on his own recognizance two days later. According to the Record-Courier newspaper, Harris's mother said her son had invited her to witness his marriage to his 30-year-old fiance, but carried her...

  • A bride's welded bliss: How she built Porsche from wrecked VW for her big day

For Megan Ashton, it was her childhood dream to arrive at her wedding in a classic Porsche. Now the 26-year-old has done exactly that – not by hiring one, as any bride might, but by building her own from a clapped-out Volkswagen Beetle. She spent six years painstakingly transforming the 40-year-old VW into a Porsche 356, the company’s first production model. The Royal Navy engineering officer paid £200 for the wreck before stripping it down to the chassis and meticulously rebuilding it virtually from scratch, donning blue overalls, getting covered in grime and grease, and spending £4,000 in the process....

Some months ago I was down to take a wedding on a Saturday. The couple had been prepared by the deacon. The groom was from a nominally Catholic family, the girl was unbaptized. So the wedding party turned up for the rehearsal on the Friday and, as usual, people were in high spirits, but in this case there was some rolling of eyes and poor behavior from some of the non Catholics. I was told by one of the assistants that they were mocking the Catholic Church and making light of what was going on. So, as I conducted the...

SNIPPET: "There are currently only three jihadi forums that are sufficiently active and well-connected to be of any interest whatsoever. Why we claim to be on the verge of defeating al-Qaida while simultaneously watching passively as they use these forums to regroup and regenerate is beyond me. These are the forums three: • al-Fidaa, a forum created by al-Qaida core. That it is directly linked to al-Qaida by definition moves it to the top of the list. Current membership: 2,462, all of whom can be considered "active" if only because they just joined the forum....

DELAWARE, Ohio (WTVN) -- A Westerville woman faces a number of charges after deputies say she sprayed them with breast milk following an argument at a wedding reception. Deputies received a report of a fight and responded to the Bridgewater Banquet Facility on Sawmill Parkway early Saturday morning. They found 30-year old Stephanie Robinette, who had apparently locked herself inside a car, along with the woman's husband and witnesses who say Robinette got drunk and had struck the man a number of times after an argument. As deputies tried to get Robinette out of the car, she told them she...

Methodist pastors who have defied a church ban on marrying gays were dealt a setback Wednesday when clergy members hearing a church trial found a colleague from Osceola, Wis., guilty of marrying a lesbian couple in 2009. The 13-person jury of clergy members unanimously convicted the Rev. Amy DeLong. They found the 44-year-old not guilty of a second charge of being a "self-avowed practicing homosexual." That vote was 12-1. After the verdicts were announced in Kaukauna, Wis., church officials heard a second round of testimony to help jurors recommend a penalty that could range from suspension to defrocking. Their decision...

According to local TV, the 22-year-old sobbed and swung her legs out the window for about an hour before police officers arrived. Li said she could not live with the fact her fiancé had left her and married another woman just days before their wedding, local TV said. Video:...

Geoffrey Robertson in Fairfax's National Times yesterday: It is an open secret at the Commonwealth Secretariat that they do not want Charles III to be the next head of the Commonwealth when the Queen retires -- they are looking for someone more inspiring. Mandela, once the favourite candidate, is now too old. But there is an even better candidate whose name is being mentioned as an alternative to Charles in due course, namely ex-President Obama, with his Kenyan ancestry (as some believe, Kenyan birth). There are rumours that the palace's refusal to invite him to the wedding was neither oversight...

Off with their hats! It was bigger than the Super Bowl and as tacky as a legion of Elvis impersonators. Most of all, it was disturbingly white. Yesterday's little wedding of William and Kate, a worldwide showcase of dreadful hats, fad diets and an unusually sour, lemon-yellow-clad queen, was designed to prove to the common man that the royals, finally, were down with the people. But from the moment a triumphant Kate tiptoed with her dad onto the red carpet -- yes, she walked an actual red carpet to and from the altar -- I saw not a potential queen....

Instead of spending another day immersed in Middle Eastern names, culture, religion, death and destruction, the world was treated to western culture, etiquette and a Christian gathering in the House of the Lord, to celebrate the marriage of a man and a woman who love one another. It was a beautiful ceremony, in a beautiful setting. It was uplifting. It was a happy, joyous day. I wish the newlyweds a loving and productive life. Queen Elizabeth can take a bow now that the British royal family will be in good hands after she's gone.

We sat down at 9.30am and watched the whole thing until THE KISS four hours later. Didn’t intend to. At my age this history/politics junkie tends towards the cynical and, of course, being a man prefers to maintain a cool mask of disdain while the ladies wax lyrical over weddings and babies. Plus I’m always suspicious of crowds. But the sheer enthusiasm and goodwill of the people who came to watch disarmed my pessimism.
