Democratic Governor Earl Ray Tomblin, who describes himself as pro-life and campaigned as a pro-life candidate, has vetoed a bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. West Virginians for Life, the statewide pro-life group, tells LifeNews it is disappointed in Governor Tomblin’s veto of HB 4588, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. Similar bills have been passed in ten other states and Governor Tomblin is the only governor who has vetoed one of these bills. fetalpain2In his veto message, the Governor claimed that attorneys advised him the bill was unconstitutional. Many cite an Arizona law as proof,...

On Friday, West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin (D) vetoed a measure that would protect unborn children from abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy. The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act was passed with overwhelming bipartisan support by the Democrat-led state legislature. As Breitbart News reported on March 10, the West Virginia state Senate passed the measure, 29-5, with the support of 19 Democrats. The bill also passed in the state House by a vote of 79-17 with the support of 33 Democrats. The legislation, which would protect unborn children beginning at 20 weeks of pregnancy, is based on scientific evidence...

Timberlake, VA - Sports, sneakers, and short hair; it's what makes eight year old Sunnie Kahle unique. It's also what had her removed from Timberlake Christian School. Her grandparents pulled the plug on her time there after they said she was no longer welcome. The family received a letter telling them that if their eight year old granddaughter didn't follow the school's "biblical standards," that she'd be refused enrollment next year. She's out and in public school now. Sunnie Kahle has short hair and a huge heart, and as far as her grandparents are concerned, she is a completely normal...

The number of food stamp recipients (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP) fell in Texas in 2013, dropping 4.6 percent from a year earlier to 3.9 million recipients in December 2013. Nationally, SNAP caseload declined by 2.1 percent from December 2012 to December 2013 as the job market gradually warmed up. California’s SNAP caseload bucked the national trend, increasing 4.1 percent to 4.3 million recipients, the second-largest percentage increase in the nation behind Maryland. Eleven states saw an increase in their SNAP rolls, Maryland, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Nebraska and Rhode Island , while...

Shelley Moore Capito largely has avoided national attention. Now her U.S. Senate race has raised her profile as one of the Republican Party's best hopes to tip the chamber's balance of power. The party could win a narrow majority this fall if it holds onto its 45 Senate seats and takes six of the 55 held by Democrats, including that of West Virginia's Jay Rockefeller, who is retiring. She is one of the few moderate candidates out there and has the right profile in this state to become the first Republican senator since the 1950s. If she beats her Democratic...

It looks like the Democrats are steadily losing the war on women. The state of West Virginia, which votes for Republican presidents but has a Democratic governor and state legislature, passed a ban on abortions after 20 weeks because babies are viable outside the womb and can feel pain. West Virginia is the first Democrat-ruled state to do so, and the vote was not even close: The state’s Democrat-led House the House passed the bill 85-15, according to the Associated Press. The Senate had previously passed the bill 25 to 9, according to the Herald Dispatch. The outstanding support for...

Here's an astonishing poll: David Freddoso at Conservative Intelligence Briefing links to a report by the Washington Post's Aaron Blake that West Virginia 3rd district incumbent Rep. Nick Rahall trails Republican challenger state Sen. Evan Jenkins by a 54-percent to 40-percent margin. The poll was conducted by the Tarrance Group, a Republican firm which, like several Democratic and other Republican firms, has had a good record for reliability over the years. This is astonishing for several reasons. Rahall, first elected in 1976, is now the seventh most senior member of the House, with three of the more senior members retiring...

March 12, 2014 Rahall: I supported Bush more than Obama Russell Berman A longtime House Democrat in electoral jeopardy this fall says he supported former President George W. Bush more than President Obama. Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.), first elected in 1976, is a top target of Republicans in a state where Obama has long been deeply unpopular. He is facing a state senator, Evan Jenkins, who switched to the GOP to challenge him, and the House Democratic campaign committee recently added him to its “Frontline” list of members that need the most help saving their seat in November. “There’s no...

Over the weekend the West Virginia House and Senate put the finishing touches on a hugely important bill. If Gov. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin signs HB 4588– The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act– West Virginia’s unborn babies, who can feel pain, will be protected from abortion. If there is not a compelling state interest in protecting unborn children from such a hideous death, what would qualify? If Gov. Tomblin signs the bill into law, West Virginia will join ten other states and the United States House of Representatives that have passed similar bills. If Governor Tomblin signs the bill into...

Nate May's Prius is loaded down with water. The back is filled with boxes, each holding three one-gallon jugs that he just bought at Walmart. He and other volunteers are driving around Charleston, W.V., dropping off the jugs to people who have contacted his ad hoc group, the West Virginia Clean Water Hub. It's paid for with donations. "There are a lot of people this has put in a difficult bind. Some of them can't get out, some of them are elderly, some of them — it's just too much of a financial burden," May says. CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A bill to prohibit abortions later than 20 weeks after conception has passed the West Virginia House and will be sent to the governor to sign into law. On Saturday, the House passed the bill 85-15 with two delegates not voting. House Speaker Tim Miley denied requests to talk about the bill. The Democrat from Harrison said lawmakers had too many bills to get through. West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin says he's concerned that a bill to prohibit abortions after 20 weeks could be unconstitutional.

In Kentucky, Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is running even or slightly behind in polls for reelection, despite the state’s heavily Republican lean. The central dynamic of the race concerns whether the Democratic challenger, Alison Lundergan Grimes, can distance herself from President Obama. McConnell is painting Grimes as Obama’s puppet, while Grimes is instead attaching herself to Bill and Hillary Clinton, who are far more popular in the state. Why is that? Here, in today’s Washington Post, is an odd passage explaining Clinton’s popularity vis-à-vis Obama: While President Obama’s approval rating in Kentucky is in the mid-30s, Bill Clinton...

Unborn babies who are capable of feeling pain are one step closer to protection from gruesome death by dismemberment abortion in West Virginia. The House Judiciary Committee passed the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.B. 4588) Friday afternoon on a voice vote. Now that H.B. 4588 is out of Judiciary, the bill will go to the House floor for first, second, and third readings. After a favorable vote (and it should pass by an overwhelming margin), the bill will be sent to the Senate. fetalpainAll week long pro-lifers around the state have been following the progress of H.B. 4588. **SNIP** Midterm elections are often a reflection of the approval rating of the incumbent president and now President Obama stands at 42.8%. And elections in the 6th year of a PresidentÂ’s term are usually not good for the incumbentÂ’s party. • West Virginia: Three Daycare Centers Close in Part Because of ObamaCare

Today, scores of parents will have to start looking for a new daycare. Three Kanawha County daycare centers will be closing soon. The daycare centers are at the Capital Complex, Shawnee, and Elk Center schools. The county says they’re too expensive to operate and have been losing $65,000 since the beginning of the school year. The buildings are in major need of repairs, too. And there are concerns about added costs because of the Affordable Care Act. Parents impacted by the closures are frustrated and now worried about waiting list to get their child into another daycare.
